    1. [SUMPTER-L] Administrivia-- Per Minute Charges For E-mail
    2. Jim & Mary Pat Young
    3. Greetings Fellow Family Researchers & possible Cousins! First, I wish all a Happy, Productive, and Prosperous New Year and may your genealogical tree blossom and bear fruit. Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and participation in the Family Discussion List(s). I have received a number of posts regarding "per minute charges for e-mail"; and, I regret to inform that, though the intentions of those who were forwarding them was well- meaning, this concern dates back to a year ago. This go-around for this report is nothing more than a HOAX at this time. Please do not send messages which do not pertaining to the family surname or subject matter to this list without checking either with me first or, at the very least, not without checking the source of the material you receive as in doing genealogical research, verify, verify, VERIFY. No virus warning, chain message, or commercial message should be sent to any surname list without checking with the List Moderator first and definitely not without verifying the source of the information. Should you ever need assistance, please don't hesitate in asking me and I will do my best to help. Happy Huntin' Jim Young

    1. [SUMPTER-L] Information
    2. Jane Malone-George
    3. These informative items were found in the Prewitt-Pruitt-Pruett Newsletter for January 1998. Until the last century, a mother had no legal custody of her children. The term 'orphan'meant only that the father was dead. The ten most common surnames in the US are: Smith, Johnson, Williams, Jones, Brown, Davis, Miller, Wilson, Moore and Taylor. Missouri birth and death records have been reduced from $22 to $10 from the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records, PO Box 570, Jefferson City, MO 65120 The 'Nashville Banner' now features a genealogical column which will publish queries of interest to middle Tennessee area. Address: Genealogy Column, Nashville Banner, 1100 Broadway, Nashville,TN 37203. Hope this helps with your research. Jane George

    1. [SUMPTER-L] Virus
    2. Jane Malone-George
    3. I have just received an email from a cousin saying there are 3 bad viruses going around. One is contained in email "Join the Crew" which will erase your hard drive. Another is "Penpal Greetings" a trojan horse which will destroy your data and once the message is read it will forward itself to anyone whose email address is in your mailbox. AOL says to not look at "Returned or unable to deliver" as it will attach itself to your computer components and render them useless. Delete all of these without looking!! Jane George

    1. Administrivia-- Searchable Archive Website
    2. Jim & Mary Pat Young
    3. To All List Members, Rootsweb has finished the project of putting all past messages sent to the list into a searchable archive. The older messages from Maiser at Indiana University are also included. You can search the archives on the majority of the surname lists at: http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html It is really great. For example a state, county, first name, wife's maiden name, etc., (limited only by your imagination) can be searched within the archives for that particular list. I've tested the search system and it is easy to use. The URL for the searchable RootsWeb archive is: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Have fun. Please direct all comments and questions concerning the searchable archive site to my email address: myoung@icok.net Happy Huntin' Jim Young

    3. Hi Everyone... Just purchased a copy of Family TreeMaker Deluxe III and it shows the parents of Wm. Sumpter as Nicholas & Katherine Mathews. Appears this fallacy is going to keep going until all of us give up on finding the real parents. Haven't looked too much further but it does have a huge SS data bank - through 1996 so if you know the name and birth date and approx. date of death, I'd be glad to do look ups for you (as time permits). The page is set up as follows: NAME/DATE OF BIRTH/PLACE ISSUED/DATE OF DEATH/PLACE OF DEATH Not all of the above is required, but some or part of it is helpful... Again, looks like FTM blew it for accuracy. Take care... Beverley Sumpter

    3. Hello, Here's a query for everyone. I am researching Eribin Sumpter b. 1843 married to Martha ________ b. 1835. I know about his lineage back to Richard Sumpter and Jean in Virginia. My question is: Does anyone know Martha's last name. Also, their daughter Melvina, my great grandmother, was said to be Cherokee. Does anyone know anything about that? Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Kathy schumach@earthlink.net

    3. To All List Members, I have configured all subject surname lists which I moderate to post all messages to a webpage archive file. These archived messages will be available to the internet public who has a web browser. Therefore, if your ISP goes down because of electrical outages or other reasons and the RootsWeb computer automatically removes your address from the list, you will be able to review all posted messages while your system was down. You can also view message from other discussion groups which are on the webpage. The URL for viewing archived messages is as follows: http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/lists/ Procedures for finding archives messages are detailed below: 1. Click on the surname or other discussion group of your choice; 2. Click on "1997"; 3. Click on the month which is "November" for the time being; 4. Click on "maillist.html" to view all messages by Subject and submitter; and, 5. Click on the message you wish to view. You will be able to click on the submitter to send a follow-up message to their post. After having a opportunity to view the archived messages, it becomes evident why using meaningful subject lines on messages becomes a necessity. Sometime in the future, previous messages posted to the discussion groups will be added to the archive webpage.
