    1. [SUMPTER-L] Ann Sumpter(?) Canady
    2. Jane Malone-George
    3. I am searching for information and/or descendants of Ann (Sumpter?) Canady. Marshall and Ann Canady are listed in 1850 Virginia Census with two children: John H. Sumpter age 5 and Mary A. Sumpter age 3. It is possible that Ann is the widow of a Sumpter man and has recently married Marshall Canady. The family is in Patrick Co,VA, and all list Virginia as a birthplace. Is the family still in Patrick Co, VA, in the 1860 and 1870 census listings? Who is the Sumpter father of these children? Thanks for any and all information. Jane Sumpter Malone-George

    1. [SUMPTER-L] John Sumpter - Green Co IN
    2. Jane Malone-George
    3. Does anyone have information about this man? John Sumpter married Minerva J. Minear about 1860 probably in Clay or Green Co, IN. He was born 1834 in Indiana, she was born 1841 in Indiana. The 1880 Greene Co, IN, census lists them with the following children: Sadie (Sarah) b 1862 IN, Rosie E b 1864 IN, Lizzie b 1867 IN. Later data from a letter from Harold Sumpter, lists two sons: Mathew who died young and Charles Otha (?) born 1881 IN. The letter also said that John was dead before 1900 and that Minerva died in 1904. I am seeking information about John's parents and sibblings. Thanks for any and all help!! 1. [SUMPTER-L] RootsWeb Funding
    2. Jim & Mary Pat Young
    3. Hi fellow subscribers, Below are two messages from Dr. Brian Leverich, the RootsWeb owner, discussing some costs for operating the RootsWeb server. As you may know, RootsWeb is funded through voluntary contributions from users like you and I. Please review the personal benefits derived from becoming an annual contributing RootsWeb Member, Sponsor or Donor and how the contributions are used at the following website: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html I wish to extend my appreciation to those who have already made voluntary contributions by becoming either a RootsWeb Member, Sponsor or Donor. Those who have contributed to RootsWeb are encouraged to indicate your RootsWeb membership status in your signature line when posting queries or responses to the surname discussion list(s). The cost to operate RootsWeb in Fiscal Year ending July 1997 was about $60,000; and, FY98 is anticipated to cost about $150,000. Please take the time to read both of Brian's messages which are appended below. Thanks for your time and support. I'm passing along the question and my answer to everyone because other folks might be wondering about this. Cheers, B. -- Your message was: > Brian Leverich wrote: > > > The new search engine box is under construction on my bench now. I hope my post about the search engine wasn't taken as > impatience or ungratefulness. ------------------ Hi - The prebuilt VArServer 3000 we have on order from VA Research will cost us $13,500. That server is planned to be used as the upgrade to the current www.rootsweb.com server. The old www.rootsweb.com will replace the current mailhub.rootsweb.com, which in turn will become a dedicated DNS/MX server: nothing ever goes to waste at RootsWeb. (: The handbuilt search engine server, which is slightly larger/faster than the VArServer 3000, has cost us about: Server case & heavy duty power supply $ 500.00 Motherboard $ 500.00 Pentium Pro 200 CPUs w 512KB caches[2] $ 1,000.00 128 MB EDO SIMMs[8] $ 3,200.00 RAID-5 caching disk controller $ 1,800.00 Seagate Barracuda 9 GB ultrawide SCSI drives[5] $ 4,500.00 Tape backup $ 500.00 IDE 4GB system drive $ 200.00 3COM 3C900 100Mb ethernet adapter $ 100.00 Video board $ 100.00 CDROM drive $ 100.00 Keyboard & mouse $ 100.00 Misc cables, mounting brackets, & such $ 100.00 ---------- $12,700.00 Any contribution you can make would, of course, be much appreciated. BTW, and folks don't often realize this, it really is *much* more a matter of money than my time because money can easily substitute for my time. VA Research servers cost about 15-20% more than the machines I can handbuild, but buying preconfigured machines saves oodles of my time. If RootsWeb ran at less of a loss, we'd always be buying prebuilt servers and using my time that was freed up to do more useful things like getting whizzier cgi-bin tools set up for the Webmasters and Listowners. If I wanted to > send this message to my subscribers (about 1000 to 1500 now) is it: > > A good idea? ------------------ It's a good idea, *but certainly not at all an obligation*. Here's why it's a good idea. RootsWeb costs *real* money to operate -- about $60,000 in our fiscal year that ended in July 1997 and, with demand growing at about 15% per month, we expect to spend in the neighborhood of $150,000 this year. And that's just barely scraping by on servers and bandwidth. More income would let us buy more prebuilt servers, which would help us do things like get the archives back on line faster and add other whizziness for the Webmasters and Listowners. Also, more income would let us do what we *really* want to be doing, which is buying genealogical data and uploading it to the Web for everyone to freely use. Our experience has been that posts listmasters have passed on to their lists are our single best source of income. So it's great and we *much* appreciate it when listowners help us fundraise. BUT IT'S NOT AN OBLIGATION !!! No listowner has an obligation to even mention RootsWeb on their lists. Thanks to everyone for their support! If it weren't for RootsWeb's Members, Sponsors, and Donors, there wouldn't be a RootsWeb. -B -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O. 1. [SUMPTER-L] 1895 U. S. Atlas
    2. Jim & Mary Pat Young
    3. I downloaded the Virginia map and it is a great resource. However, be forewarned, with a 14.4 modem it takes about 20 minutes to down the VA map. Perhaps, a similar download time will be required on the other state maps. However, the download time is a minor inconvience and well worth the time and effort. Jim Young -------------- Pam Rietsch <prietsch@ismi.net> writes: Hi Rooters.... Well almost 16 months after I began the project, the data entry portion of the 1895 Atlas is complete. All of the states, except Alaska (which has a map only) plus the District of Columbia have data which shows what towns where around in that time period. Each town also shows the population, the county it is located in, where in the state it is located, whether it has a post office, a railroad station or an express office. This is especially helpful if you have some sort of a record from either the 1880 census or the 1900 and in some case state census of 1885 where it shows a town that cannot be found on current maps. So many small towns over the years have either totally disappeared, or been merged with other larger towns and have for all intents and purposes vanished. The nice thing about this project is that you can also download a map of the state also to see the exact placement of your town in question. Watch the site over the next few months as I intend to do lots more to make it more user friendly....and will also be scanning in the world maps that came with the atlas. I will not have data for them, but I think the old maps could prove useful in research. The site can be found at: http://www.ismi.net/lcmigw Several people have had difficulties in printing out the maps, so I now have a special page set up with instructions on how to accomplish this feat, just a click away. If there is anything I can do that would help you to use the Atlas better, please feel free to contact me. Remember to do your "hug homework" ! Pam

    1. [SUMPTER-L] Leiths Sumpter Found
    2. Leitha Sumpter remarried to a Williams and lived in Sunnyside CA in the 1940's. This is the person my Mother remembers taking care of in CA. Aprox. 6 weeks after my parents arrived to take care of them leitha fell and broke her hip and was placed in a nursing home. Her second husband (first name unknow) surname Williams is assumed to also be placed in a nursing home. I asked my mother a lot of questions about this matter. What she had to say was that Letha's son who lived in the area asked them to come from OK to help take care of them she does not know this persons name only that it was her son. My mother does not remember his name or if he had any kids in the area or not. This is what I know of Leitha since I do have cousins in CA I will ask them for there help to locate the burial place of Letha. My mother stated that after Leitha was put into nursing home that they never went back to see her. I would like to know if anyone out there knows any more of Leitha if not I would like to persue this matter with great interest. Thank you DdHober

    3. Thanks to Jim Landrum and his research, we have George Sumpter coming to America as an indentured servant 20 June 1721. Also, Jim found records showing a George Sumpter was christened to William and Elizabeth Sumpter 9 Feb 1699 in St. Brides Parish Fleet Street, London. The same parish from which George leaves for America. I had found the item about George the Immigrant in a book, Emigrants from England to America, 1718-1759 by Jack and Marian Kaminkow. The Kaminkows listed James Gerald as the English Agent who signed George to the indenture. It is my understanding that the Agents then sold the indentures to men in the colonies which could account for not finding any record of a James Gerald in early Virginia. The notebook written by Alexander Sumpter, Sr., of Missouri and later of Washington, stated that "Gr.Gr. Grandfather was a George Sumpter, an Englishman, a tailor by trade, a brother of Sumpters sent to America as carpenters by the English Government to perform a fine piece of mechanical work." I would like some comments on this: could William Sumpter, the father of General Sumter and family, Richard Sumpter of Manikintowne, and George, the immigrant, all be brothers who came to America during the early 1700s? As Jim Landrum wrote, Henry Sumpter who married Agnes Dillon did not name known children Richard. But John of Chesterfield did have a son Richard according to Curtis Sumpter's papers. George who married Elizabeth Gross and lived in Floyd Co,VA, did name a son Richard. The father of the General did not have a known son named Richard. I wonder if we can begin to organize these very early Sumpters and their ancestors by such a simple method as the names they gave their children? Of course, this is not proof but it could give us clues for further search. Please, let's have some thoughts about this. Thanks Jane Sumpter Malone-George

    2. Hello to all my Sumpter friends and cousins. I have been off line while moving. New address Jim Landrum 8619 Brer Rabbit Cove Cordova,Tn. 38018 Jpiccafe@aol.com Another new idea on Henry's line. From the Corporation Records Office London Class. Memoranda of Agrrements to serve in America and the West Indies. George Sumpter listed as an indentured servant 20/June/1721, Occupation shown as a brick layer. From St. Brides Parish Fleet Street, London, England. 19 years old to serve James Gerald. 5 years in Virginia. To continue. Further research from the LDS London IGI records show a George Sumpter christened to William and Elizabeth Sumpter 09/Feb/1699 from the same Parish. Could this be Henry's father and not Richard as some of us are trying to document. I have found no tie in with Richard other than they are from the same general areas of Virginia. In our Henry line there are lots of Georges and Williams but no Richards. Surely someone would name a son or Grandson after Richard Sumpter. I have tried without success so far to find a James Gerald in Virginia circa 1720. If we could find him perhaps we could find the above George.

That should last us awhile. The next upgrade we plan is to double the memory in the main list server (lists.rootsweb.com) to 512 MB of DRAM. To accomplish that, we'll need to take the box entirely offline for 2-3 hours and there may be some brief downs after that while we tune things up. The downs will occur during the next 48 hours, and possibly as early as this afternoon if all goes well. After the main memory in the list server is upgraded, the next box we'll be upgrading is the search engine server. The new search engine server will have a gigabyte of DRAM and 45 GB of very high- speed RAID-5 disk storage. When the search engine upgrades are complete, we'll reindex the list archives, reindex the USGenWeb archives, give Marc Nozell all the space he'll ever need for the list archiver (:, and set up scheduled reindexing so the list and USGenWeb Archives searches stay fairly close to current. As always, I'd like to express RootsWeb's appreciation for your support. With a gigabyte of memory costing $3,500 and a RAID-5 array costing $7,500, we couldn't be doing all this without the support of RootsWeb's Members, Sponsors, and Donors. 3. Hi, Beth Sumpter gave me your email address. Im seeking information on Katherine Sumpter b. 26 Jan 1849, Va, married Jacob Bishop Apr 1871. Their son Ballard Bishop, b. 20 March 1880, was my husbands grandfather. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive hit a stone wall with Katherine and Jacob. Thanks, Barbara Bishop Hi Barb Yes, I can help. Curtis Sumpter of Floyd, VA, a lawyer, sent me extensive data about his family. Since then, I have added to his notes with census data. Elizabeth Catherine (as she appeared on the census and in Curtis' notes) was the daughter of Asa and Jemima Dickerson Sumpter of Floyd Co, VA. Asa born 15 Mar 1825 Floyd Co died 14 May 1898 Floyd Co. He married Jemima Dickerson 23 Dec 1845. E. Catherine was their second child according to Curtis. Asa was the son of Richard and Caty Sowder Sumpter. Richard was born 19 Dec 1801 died 1 Dec 1882 both in Floyd Co. He married Catherine (Caty) Sowder 10 Feb 1824 in Franklin Co, VA. Surety John Sowder, Minister Wilson Turner. Asa was their first son. Richard was the son of Edmund Sr and Elizabeth Kingery Sumpter. Edmund Sr was born 25 Feb 1770 Charlotte Co VA and died 10 April 1856. He married Elizabeth Kingery 16 Mar 1795 probably in Franklin Co,VA. Elizabeth listed Pennsylvania as her birth state. Surety for their wedding Jacob Kingery and Jacob Miller was the minister. Richard was their known fifth child. Edmund Sr was the son of George and Elizabeth Gross Sumpter probably of Charlotte Co VA. We have no definite dates for this couple except that George's will was dated 31 Sep 1800 and he supposedly was killed in a lumbering accident in 1806. Elizabeth is listed on the 1806 tax list with George, Jr., leading us to believe that George, Sr. was deceased. Edmund Sr served during the War 1812 - source Draper 18VV115. Asa served in the Confederate Army, 54th VA Infantry Co A. If I can be of further help, please let me know. Jane Sumpter Malone-George

    1. [SUMPTER-L] Administrivia-- HOW TO SUBMIT A QUERY
    2. Jim & Mary Pat Young
    3. J.J. Johnson posted this information on another mailing list; and, since it would be fruitless for me to attempt any kind of improvement, I'll just pass it along. This information is appropriate for any mailing list. Happy Huntin' Jim Young --------------------------------------- J.J. Johnson Writes: Hello Kuzinz, To make your query work harder for you remember the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following things possible: WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific events or bits of information. Post another one or more later with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one. In this way each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790's, late 1800's etc.) WHERE: Mention the location in the body of the query. Include a more specific location if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. Apply the KISS SYSTEM: Keep It Simple Simple. SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query, place the SURNAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember, many subscribers belong to multiple list servers. Some go through their mail looking at subject fields only. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it. Use it again about once a month, because new members join often. Also, you may use it on web sites that accept them. EXAMPLE: Here is an example of one of my standard querys. Look for the ingredients mentioned above. ---Begin Example--- FROM: gnbf@gate.net SUBJECT: JOHNSON, b.14Jul1914, Sevier County, AR MESSAGE: James Howard JOHNSON was born in DeQueen of Sevier County, AR on 14Jul1914. He married Treacy Blanch PENG in 1937 in AR. He was a musician and trick roper with a rodeo. Offspring are: Rosetta Lawanda, b1938, TN Anice Irene, b1943, TN James William, b1944, TN (This is me!) James Howard is my father; I haven't heard from him since 1954. At that time, he lived in Lamar, CO and had remarried to Helen ?? Since his name doesn't appear in the SSDI, I am working on the belief that he is still alive. ---End Example--- REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group) such as this is an excellent means for helping you reach it. Make the query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need.
