In answer to a recent query from Vicki Halton about Sarah Sumpter who married John Jones and had a son Solomon born in KY about 1812. My card file does show a Sarah Sumpter, daughter of George and Elizabeth Gross Sumpter of Franklin Co, VA. Sarah married John Jones 5 July 1790 in Franklin Co, VA with Solomon Jones, Surety and Randolph Hall, Minister. John and Sarah Sumpter Jones had the following children: Sally married Jacob Barnett Frankey married Samuel Hoff or Poff Elizabeth (d 1835) married Henry Jackson Lucy married Henry Poff Abigail married Mathew Poff Sinthea married Charles Simmons Ally married Amos Sutton Ann (b Nov 1807) married James Stapleton Lewis Solomon George John This information comes from several sources: Curtis Sumpter of Floyd, VA, who also descends from George and Elizabeth Gross Sumpter. The LdS microfiche; and Lora Weatherman's book states that John and Sarah Sumpter Jones lived in Randolph Co, IN, where both died. She gives Sarah's death date as 1847. Is there any Sumpter or Jones researcher out there who can either corroborate this information or correct it? Both Vicki and I would be very appreciative. Thanks Jane Sumpter Malone-George
Ihave 4 pictures of interst on my new web page if anyone is interested in looking at it. I have a picture of Leitha Sumpter, her brother Will Sumpter, Leithas son John Bailey Eoff in his youth and in his older years with all his kids. If anyone is interested I also have a copy of my Grandmother Pairlee Eoff Brown. This picture is not posted to the web page but I do have some photocopies of other pictures of Leitha and Pairlee. I was unable to get any info from my uncle in McCalester Ok cause he did not know anythign about Leitha or her family. In fact I told him more about his heritage then he even knew. The new page is http://members.aol.com/d2hober/oldpics.html Thank you all for the information on the Sumpter children. DdHober
Recently in a listing of Roster of Confederate Soldiers edited by Janet B. Hewett, a Fielding and a Fielden Sumpter were listed from Missouri. Following is a list of Fielding/Fieldens which I have in my card file. 1. Fielding b 1769 VA, d 1850-60 MO son of Capt William and Judith Randall Sumpter. If you check the marriage records in DAvis County, Iowa, you will see that it is Liford. Also, there was a Liford family living there -
Here is the information I said I would get on Mary Ann. I hope this clears things up on her. Her line has been researched by others. This information was obtained thru Jannsue@aol.com I don't know quite what you mean by the "correct" information about Mary Ann Lawson Liford Sumpter. She was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann "Polly" Morgan. She was born in Claiborne or Hancock County, Tennessee. Her sister was Elizabeth Lawson who married James Evans Sumpter. She was first married in Davis County, Iowa to Jubilee Liford. She and LIford had one son. She became pregnant with John David Sumpter's child who was named Missouri Ellen Sumpter. After the birth of Missouri Ellen, John Sumper and she off from Putnam County, Mo. to Newton County, Arkansas and lived next door to Mary Ann's uncle Reuben Lawson for awhile. They lived together as common-law man and wife for about 10 years. After John and Rebecca Mullenix Sumpter obtained their divorce in Putnam; County, Mo. John finally married Mary Ann. During this time they had one child each year. After John Sumpter died, I think Mary Ann remarried to a man named Campbell, but I have not been able to prove this. This is all I know about Mary Ann Lawson Liford Sumpter. Janine.

Rayme D. Long queried the Sumpter Rootsweb on 30 July 1998 about Robert Sumpter, son of Fielding and Sarah Sumpter of Missouri. The information in my card file concerning this man is his birth in 1817 in Wayne Co, KY and his marriage to Martha Parker 24 Dec. 1835 in Monroe County, MO; marriage book 1 page 34. Is this the Robert Sumpter who filed an original land entry in Missouri in September 1836? Can someone help with data about this Robert Sumpter? Thanks. My computer program got a major glitch in it and I have lost dates and places and it made new initials for some of John and his kids. I also have a question that I am a little confused on. I was recently corrected on Mary Lawsons first spouses lsat name as being Liford not Lipard. What I need to know is how many times Mary was married. We found another possible marriage to a Cambel after John Sumpter passed away. It just gives it as Mrs. M. A. Sumpter married to a G. W. Campbell on 10 Aug 1887. Does anyone know if this was Johns second wife Mary lawson or not. If I am wrong on any of my info on my web page please let me know I will make corrections and any additions as quick as I can. Thank you all DdHober http://members.aol.com/ddhober/index1.html

Henry Sumpter appears in Posey Co, IN, in the 1830 Federal Census with 2 males under 5, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10 and 1 female 20-30. A Henry Sumpter married Mahala Mutry (McMurtrey?) 16 January 1823 in Crawford Co, IN. Abraham Fowler swears age for the couple. This Henry Sumpter apparently isn't on future census records. In 1835, the heirs of Henry Sumpter were listed on an act of Congress for the relief of said heirs. The act was read for the third time and passed. By 1850, a George Sumpter b 1825 is working in a Bailey home in Posey Co, IN. A James Sumpter b 1831 is working in an Overton Home. A Thomas Sumpter b 1829 and a Mahala Sumpter b 1798 NC are living in Macon Co, Missouri. Is this the Henry who married down on the Wabash as mentioned in the notebook written in longhand by Alexander Sumpter, Jr., of Missouri and Oregon? Can anyone help with solving the puzzle of this Henry? Jane Sumpter Malone-George

I am researching information on Robert O. Sumpter, born 1-2-1817 in North Carolina. Grandfather was John Sumpter, born 1755 in VA. I have no further info on John. Any help would be appreciated, Thank You, April
While going through old notes, I found the following which tie in with data submitted by Jim Landrum earlier this year. In the Valentine Papers by Edward Pleasants Valentine, page 253, Archibald Cary of Chesterfield Co, VA, to Richard Sumpter of same county, 18 1/4 acres in Chesterfield, Deed Book 2, p 82, dated 8 May 1756. Also in Valentine's book, a Stephen Sumter of New Kent County, owned land in precinct 17 of the county. It stated that Stephen Sumter was among the landowners who formed Precinct 4 in 1720. Can anyone determine who Stephen Sumter was and how he might be related to Richard, George and William Sumpter, if he was part of the same family? On 10 Aug 1784 Charles Bush paid to P. Ballard, Albemarle County, VA, 25 pounds for part of a tract purchased by William Sumter, adjacent Leonard Davis. Deed Book 9, page 10. Can anyone identify this William Sumpter? Is he the man of Albemarle County who married Margaret Hoskins in Albemarle Co in 1774? Just prior to the Civil War, there is a record in Surry Co, NC, of two Sumpter women's marriages: Menty Sumpter married J. W. Alltizer 22 Mar 1860 Sarah Sumpter married Floyd Sumpkins 10 June 1855 Can anyone identify these two women? All help will be appreciated and will enable me to update my Sumpter/Sumter cardfile. A number of Sumpter researchers are looking for the parents of Jesse Sumpter b 1760-1788 NC (married Elizabeth Mason Jan 1812) and also for the parents of Isham (Isom) Sumpter b 1790-1800 NC (married Susannah Loving Rollins Feb 1816). The book Paso del Aguila written by Jesse Sumpter, a son of Isham and Susannah Sumpter, does not give the parentage of Isham. It has been thought that these men were sons of a William Sumpter. But which William? Following are William Sumpters who probably were in the North Carolina area during this time period. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated: l. Captain William Sumpter was a brother of General Thomas Sumter. Captain William married Judith Randall in Virginia before moving to North Carolina and had 9 children. According to a letter in the Draper Papers (located at the Wisconsin Historical Society) Captain William married a second time and always claimed to have fathered 19 children. This letter was written by Capt. William's daughter in law Jane ?? Captain William died in 1819. 2. William Sumpter born @1757 VA was a son of Captain William and Judith Randall Sumpter. His wife Jane ? was born in 1777 and they are the known parents of a son Joel. However, was this William Sumpter married before he married Jane? If so, does anyone know the identity of his first wife? 3. John Sumpter was a brother of General Thomas Sumter and also of Captain William Sumpter. John married Catherine ? (possibly Van Pelt) and most of their children are documented according to Dr. Ward Sumpter and to Harold Sumpter and their research. Did John and Catherine have a son named William? If so, what did happen to him since we have no documented information concerning him. 4. There are two documented marriages for a William Sumpter that I have found during my research of this time period. However, I do not know if either of the following Williams is the same as one of the above listed men: The IGI lists a wedding for William Sumpter and Catherine Brown, widow, 20 April 1784 in Charleston, SC. This wedding is in the St. Phillips Parish Register. Also in the register is a son John christened 20 Feb 1785 born to William and Catherine Sumpter. Also on the IGI. a William Sumpter married a Margaret Hoskins in 1774 in Albemarle Co, VA, Can anyone help with further information about these men? Thanks for any and all help.....Jane Sumpter Malone-George
