    3. I have spent years researching the Sumpter line in & around Randolph County MO. I found a new Sumpter that I know nothing about from a local newspaper. A Runaway Couple Spliced. On Sunday night last (12 Nov 1871) Mr. Francis M. Sumpter, of Chariton county, and Laura E. Whitmire, whose father lives on the Southern border of this county (Randolph) took it into their heads that they would run off and get married. They arrived at Uncle Sam. Davis' residence near Huntsville about midnight, but "uncle Sam." being a little blind declined to marry them that night. They set up the balance of the night at the residence of an acquaintance in town and next morning were duly spliced by "Uncle Sam." after which they went on their way rejoicing; Huntsville Herald, Huntsville, MO Thursday 16 Nov 1871 Does anyone have any idea? 3. Lucille, I am forwarding a copy of this email to the Sumpter rootsweb. Someone out there may have more data for you...let's hope so. You asked about William Garrett Sumpter b 1837 in Tennessee. Also, he had a brother named Lewis and possibly a mother Sarah "Sally". My records show this man in Letcher Co, KY in the 1860-70-80 federal census records. Dr. Ward Sumpter who researched extensively in Kentucky and Virginia believed that William Garrett and Lewis probably were descendants of the group of Sumpters who came from Henry Co, VA, and settled in Claiborne Co, TN, about 1800. This family consisted of Henry, Sr.,(wife Agnes Dillon), William (wife Margaret Pyrtle), George (wife Susannah Mays), John (wife Elizabeth Chadwick) and Henry, Jr. (wife probably Jane ?). The 1840 census for Claiborne Co, TN, lists males under 5 in the houses of three men: Henderson, George and Henry. Later census records list a younger William in Henderson's house which would eliminate him. But which man, George or Henry is the father of your William Garrett Sumpter, I do not know. Henderson, George and Henry must be sons of one of the men listed above but I do not know which one. I do thank you for the information you sent: the names of the wives of William and Lewis. This data will be added to my card file for future reference. Good luck with your research. Jane Sumpter Malone-George

    3. Hi Marvin Thanks for your query. Apparently I lost my first answer to you but did not realize it. I am also sending a copy of this to the Sumpter rootsweb so others will have it. I shall try to put source info at the end of each generation. l. John Lindsay Sumpter born 1862 probably Jasper Co, IA. He was the son of Bluford and Mary Sharp or Cottrell Sumpter. John L. married Gertrude Alma Wilson (1868-1930) 29 August 1887 in Polk Co, IA. John L. is buried in theSlaughter Cemetery, Jasper Co, IA. Children: Marion, Ruth, Faye, Doris and Raymond Source: Polk Co Marriages, Des Moines City Directory 1909, 1880 Jasper Co, IA, census, 1915 Polk Co, IA census Slaughter Cemetery, Jasper Co, IA. 2. Bluford Sumpter was born 1 July 1834 in Indiana and died before 1875. He is buried in theSlaughter Cemetery, Jasper Co. IA. Bluford was the son of John and Sally Hobbs Sumpter. He married Mary J. Cottrell 11 May 1856, Jasper Co, IA. Bluford served in Co, I. 39th IaInf, enlisting 12 Aug 1862 and was discharged 5 June 1865. Bluford was killed in a well cave in. His children were in 1880 John Rush House, Jasper Co. Children: Sarah A., John married Gertrude Wilson, Thomas married Mamie Roush (Rush) and Clara, also possible Tira. Sources: War record, War Memorial Stone, Marriage records in Jasper Co, Census records, IGI at the Mormon Library and notes from Jean Kiser. 3. John Sumpter was born 10 Mar 1794 Virginia son (?) of John and Elizabeth Chadwick Sumpter. John died 10 January 1856 in Jasper Co, IA. He married Sally Hobbs 16 Sep 1813 Tazewell, Claiborne Co, TN. John served in the War 1812 as a private in Capt Hamilton's TN Militia. The family lived Vermillion Co, IN until 1855 when they moved to Jasper Co, IA. along with daughter Polly and her husband Wm. Porter. Sally Hobbs Sumpter is listed on the 1880 IA census a widow born TN and living the grandson Enos Sumpter. Children: Thomas, John Jr, Enos, William Hamilton (Hambleton) Elizabeth, Polly, Thomas 2nd, Henry, Isaac, Bluford and Saray Jane. Sources: Federal Census records, IA census records, IGI of the Mormon Church records, Jim Landrum research, Marriage records, Bounty land records W28238-40-50, also W88474-120-55. Because John and Sally Hobbs Sumpter were in Claiborne Co, TN, I believe John was a son of John and Elizabeth Chadwick Sumpter. However, there were several men in Claiborne Co, TN, at this time all of whom were probably sons of Henry and Agnes Dillon Sumpter. The sons were: John and Elizabeth Chadwick Sumpter, William and Margaret Pyrtle Sumpter, George and Susannah Mays Sumpter plus Henry, Jr. Henry, Sr., is also believed to have moved to Tennessee. I do hope this helps with your research, Marvin. If there is anyone out there who can add more information to what I have written, please do so. Thanks. Jane Sumpter Malone-George

    3. Hi, I'm researching my direct ancestor, JOSEPH WARNOCK. Joseph married MARGARET SUMPTER. The marriage probably occurred in Ninety Six District of South Carolina in about 1780-89. The couple had children in Pendleton District South Carolina before moving on to OH, IN and finally IL. They were likely Presbyterian and were associated with early abolitionists in South Carolina. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who may have information about Margaret and her family. Dick Warnock

    3. Recently, on the History Channel there was a program concerning invasions during war of these United States - the Revolution, the War of 1812, etc. On the part concerning the Mexican War of 1848, a man named Scott Sumpter Sheads (might be an incorrect spelling) was one of the commentators. Does anyone on the Sumpter web know this man? I am particularly interested because my great grandfather was named Scott Taylor Sumpter who lived in Boone Co, IN. Scott Taylor Sumpter had a brother living in Oklahoma named Jacob Dozel Sumpter who named a son Scott Taylor Sumpter. This could just be coincidence. However, the name Scott Sumpter is the same as my great grandfather and I wonder if we are related. Thanks for any and all help. Jane Sumpter Malone-George

The purpose of this message is an attempt to conserve RootsWeb Archive space and make messages easier to read and understand. On occasions, members subscribed in the Digest mode will return the entire Digest of messages when responding to a particular message within the Digest or when forwarding a particular message from the Digest of another mailing list. Such practices take-up unnecessary storage space within the RootsWeb Archives and besides, trying to sort through an entire Digest of quoted messages to find the applicable quotes to a particular message can become a difficult task. Please, DO NOT hit your "Reply" button and return the entire Digest of messages to the list when responding to or forwarding a particular message. If you choose to use your "Reply" button to quote a particular message within the Digest, please edit the "Subject:" line to reflect the subject of the message being quoted. Prior to sending your response to the list, PLEASE highlight and delete all quoted text not applicable to your response such as headers, taglines and other messages. On occasions, members subscribed in the Mail mode will respond to a particular message without deleting unnecessary quoted text. Prior to sending your response to the list, PLEASE highlight and delete all quoted text not applicable to your response such as headers, text and taglines. For example, when responding to a question concerning an individual in a descendant report which is a 20,000 byte message, the responder does not have to return the entire 20,000 byte message as a quoted message to address the question. Probably, all except five or six lines can be deleted from the quoted message. Happy Huntin' Jim Young ================== Descendants of Richard SUMPTER - 26 Aug 1998 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - FIRST GENERATION 1. Richard SUMPTER. Jim Landrum, "I have just looked at the Henrico County Court orders from 1735 to 1744. They are almost impossible to read. I even had an index to work with. About the best to come up out of this is that Isaac Robinson, William Sheppard and Ann Matthews were allowed expense money to travel to testify for Richard Sumpter in a case against Charles Payne. From other records Isaac Robinson and Charles Payne (Charle Pean) seem to be neighbors of his in a list of tithables from King William Parish in 1744. From the Book "Turff and Twigg"" and St. James Northam Parish records Richard Sumter is the Godfather of one Charle Peane(Payne) born 17/Dec/1747. From the patent information of the Hugenots in Virginia and Manikin Town, Patent # 1447 was issued to Francis Delpish . His wife was Mary Dupre and she remarried to Charles Pene after her first Husband's death. There is a birth record in that Parish for Anne Pene on 10/Oct/1737 to Charles and Marie Pene. The first Charles Pene dies in 1747 before his son is born, leaving a will. In it he names his wife Marie, daughters Mary Delpish, Judith Delpish, Ann Pain, Prescill Pain, Sarah Pain, and step-son Peter Delpish. He also mentions the one that my wife is with child with at present. When the Child is born 17/Dec/1747 he is named Charles Peane and William Shepard and Richard Sumter are the Godfathers. William Shepard is also the Grandson of a Delpish. I think that evidence leans towards the idea that Richard Sumpter's wife Jean( I don not have that documented) is probably a member of an Hugenot family. I have seen a map of the area of that Patent and it is in the area of Henrico that became Chesterfield in 1749. In the Chesterfield County Will Book #5 06/Sept/1798 is the sale of the estate of John Sumpter and at the same time in other Court Cases Henry and William Sumpter are names as wards of the Poor, district 2, as orphans. This John is probably the Brother of the Henry we believe we descend from and Henry and William are our Henry's nephews. This is also probably the John Sumpter that was the only Sumpter from Virginia(Chesterfield County) that served in the revolution. I also believe that his orphan son Hnery is the one from Manchester that marries Sophia Straus in 1808 in that area." Richard SUMPTER and Jean had the following children: +2 i. George SUMPTER. +3 ii. 2. Thank you Jane for that OR history I guess now I will have to go see it huh. IT is a few hours drive from here but sounds so exciting to see. Thank you and hope to hear more stories on the Sumpter name from some of you other folks out there. I knew nohting of my fathers side of the family because they all lived in OK or just as far and we lived here with no money to go back there and visit. My father died in 1964 so I know little about him only what my older siblings or cousins tell me. Take care all DdHober

    3. Recently, someone asked about the Sumpter Narrow Gauge Railroad. Several years ago, I received printed pages of data about this railroad which ran between Baker City, Sumpter, Whitney and Tipton, Oregon. The town of Sumpter is located 29 miles west of Baker City in the east central part of Oregon. In 1862, three South Carolinians settled in the area of Sumpter. They were so happy that Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor had fallen to Confederate forces, that these three men named their cabin Fort Sumter. Later the name was changed to the Sumpter spelling. The town was quite small until to the Sumpter spelling. The town was quite small until the advent of modern mining equipment. In 1890 the Sumpter Valley Railroad was organized by a group of Utah Stockholders who were seeking a method of getting their company's lumber out of the valley. The section of the Sumpter Valley Railway from Sumpter to Baker was opened in 1897, a distance of 80 miles. Businessmen of all types were going to the goldfields of this area and soon it was necessary to run 4 trains a day from Baker City to Sumpter. In June 1901, the railroad was extended to Whitney, eleven miles southeast of Sumpter. In 1904, it was again extended to Tipton, ten miles by rail from Whitney. By 1908, to Austin in Grant County, Oregon. By 1910, it was extended over Dixie Pass and down to Prairie City. By this time, the railroad was not only transporting lumber and ore,but was popular for passengers, freight and even shipping livestock to market. The decline of the railroad began in 1933 when the section from Prairie City to Austin was abandoned. Passenger service was discontinued 4 years later and the last scheduled run was in April 1947. Great piles of cordwood were stacked along the right-of-way and everyone, passengers and crew, helped at each stop to load the wood onto the train. The grades were steep and the engine needed every bit steam pressure to climb the grades. The roadbed was extremely rough. Old timers in the area nicknamed the train the Stump Dodger because the ride was so rough. This has been a brief history of the Sumpter Valley Railroad taken from a printed book titled "Oregon's Golden Years." Jane Sumpter Malone-George
