Hello List Family Members, To make your query work harder for you... keep in mind the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following as possible: WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific events or bits of information. Post another one or more later with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one. In this way each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790s, late 1800s etc.) WHERE: Mention the location in the body of the query. Include a more specific location if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. Apply the KISS system: Keep It Simple Simple. SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query, place the SURNAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember ! ! ! ! Many subscribers belong to multiple list servers; therefore, many go through their mail looking at subject fields only. Unfortunately, messages with "My Family", "My Line", "My Grandfather", "My JONES", etc., as subjects are deleted without ever being opened. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it and update it as necessary. Use it again about once a quarter to touch base with new members. Also, you may use it on web sites that accepts queries. REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group) such as this is an excellent means for helping you reach it. Make the query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need. GOOD QUERIES CONNECT... I posted a picture of my GGrandmother Letha Sumpter if anyone would like to see it. I also have a picture of her brother William Sumpter that I will post also. What I want to know is why no one is contributing anything to his site. Is this site going to become like our rootsweb email group a thing of the past? There is info out there to be shared by everyone or pictures. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to share in one site and we can also hold a monthly meeting in the chat room. In fact that sounds like a wonderful idea. I will set up a time sometime soon and see how many of you will come. I would like to see all of you attend. I will make it for in the eve and not a late time for everyone. Now what would be the best time to hold it, how about some input from some of you who are on the east coast when would be the best time. Just think about it and get back to me on it. I must go for now take care all. Take care all DD
I was at the Family history center again today and found some more on our Sumpters from Arkansas, so I thought I would post them here. William Sumpter; Widow, Ida May; CO F, 3Ark CAL; applied 1919, she applied 1919; he did 12/03/1918. This was from the confederate Pension applications of Garland CO. also found a marriage record in the IGI for a SUMPTER, James to Jennie Abraham m 16Sept 1886 Saline CO census I believe Jemimah Caroline Sumpter age 53 Hope this helps someone. Dd
I think the Sumpter Family on my family.com would be GREAT!! If we did not do that, we could look into buying a website for the Sumpter family info. For instance, www.sumpter.org is available, only problem is that it is $200 to register the name and then about $10-$20 a month to keep it up and running. I think the big thing now a days is a family association. I guess a lot of familes are going to this now, it is a non-profit association and any money that is given to it is money that you can write off on your taxes...TRUST ME I don't make enough to have to worry about writing it off, but it is a good idea to some. I think the main advantage to having a sumpter family association is that with the association we can ensure that we will have something to pass on to the future generations. What I mean is that let say, god for bid, that my kid is not intersted in genealogy, what would they do with the family history stuff that I have--odds are it could end up in a garage sale (and I would be turning in my grave) but, with a family association people could send their stuff to the family association. Here is a good site to look at: http://members.tripod.com/~dwiseman/index.html it is the Wiseman family association page and it is cool because they have a guestbook and people who are researching that name can go there and read the guestbook and see if they recognize any of the names that people are researching. OK OK, I have blabbered enough!! Dd, the site at my family.com sounds like the most economical, unless we want to go all out and do the association. Sincerely, Eric DeKraai http://www.taconic.net/dekraai
At 01:43 PM 2/9/99 EST, you wrote: >I was thinking of adding a page to the myfamily.com site just for the Sumpter email group. Great Idea! I created a site on MyFamily.com for the descendants of one of my lines (Lucas), and it is working out pretty good. The site does tend to go down fairly often, but hopefully that is only due to growing pains. Would you create this site for any specific Sumpter line, or for Sumpter in general? I would like to point out that the site includes a message board, chat, and the ability to email all members at once. The site is password protected, and you must be invited by a current member in order to access it. If you do create a site, please invite me. Lance Mackey lamackey@sns-access.com
Please be patient with me as I set things up. A few of you have already received the invite others please be patient with me I will get them done as soon as I can. Thank you DdHober
The site Myfamily.com is free and is all set up. It is a private site and if anyone wants their name added please email me privatly and I will set up your name as aol permits to stay on. LOL If they don't let me stay on then I can use netscape. It is officially called "The SUMPTER Family Web Site." We will be able to post messages add pictures and add our names and email addresses to it. If anyone does not want their email address on there then this site is not for you. Thank you all for your support and all of my ancestors for their support. Just kidding. Thank all of you for your support. DdHober
Hello cousins! I just wanted to let you all know that I found two copies of the book "Gamecock:the life and Campaigns of General Thomas Sumter" Including shipping, the prices are $35.00 for one without a dustcover and $54.00 for the one with the dustcover. They both are in Very Good shape!! I know I have emailed some of you on the list already but I wanted to ensure that everyone on the list got this message. If anyone is interested feel free to email me at: dekraai@taconic.net and let me know which one you are intersted and I will give you the address. Sincerely, Eric DeKraai
I was thinking of adding a page to the myfamily.com site just for the Sumpter email group. With this site we would be able to add pictures post queries or information we have found on the family. It would be a great opportunity for us to kinda get to know each other and know what parts of the Sumpter names we are researching and what areas. I would like to know if there is a big enough interest in this before I procede with setting it up. If I do set it up it will be with the knowledge that everyone will benefit from it. There is a preagreement that I would have to sign for and that is simply that we abide by the rules which are the same pretty much as all others with the exception of one that we cannot put a banner on the page other than the one of the Myfamily.com logo which will already be on the page. This would be a great way for all of us to post pictures of our various Sumpters and post queries and information on were to look for references on our surname. So how about it all I want to here from you since this will be just for family, should we set it up. If you are unsure please visit their website at http://www.myfamily.com Thank you all for your support Dd
Jane I have him as the Honerable John J. Sumpter reesident of HotSprings was born in Wartren CO MO. It says he was admitted to the Supreme Court in March 1873. I can either send you the article in snail mail fax it to you or type it out in email. The article includes his picture the title under the picture says "Hon. JOHN J. SUMPTER." he married Mary E. Casey of Bolivar, TN. his son is O.H. Sumpter b Dec 1872 who married Mary Cooper of Lincoln, Nebraska. Just let me know how u want it and I will send it. DdHober Dorothy, I would appreciate a copy of the article. Snail mail is fine. Also, I am sending a copy of this email to SUMPTER Rootsweb. John J. Sumpter is probably the son of James and Elizabeth Hilliard Sumpter of Hot Springs, Ark. He was born 7 Jul 1842 in Warrenton, MO, and died 22 June 1899 probably in Hot Springs. In his 1880 household (Federal Census) his wife is listed as Nannie E., William age 40 a brother, Elizabeth age 59 born KY, Mother, and two sisters, Sallie E. age 26 and Jennie L age 19. James the father of John, is an interesting man. He was born in Knox Co, TN, 17 Sept 1794, to Thomas and Lydia Kirkpatrick Sumpter. James married (1) Susan Geren 1819 Knox Co and they had the following children: Thomas Carol, Lydia Ann, Susan Elvira and Joseph. In 1833, James married Nancy Hopper in Parke Co, IN and had the following children: Hiram and Julia Ann. In 1838, James married Elizabeth Hilliard in Hancock Co, IN. Children of this marriage were William, John J. (apparently the man listed above), Ellen, Emmeline, Anna E., Sarah and possibly Hawkins. Nancy Hopper Sumpter and her two children were living in Knox Co, TN in 1860 with relatives of James. Both Nancy and Elizabeth filed pension claims for James' service during the War of 1812. The 1850 Federal Census of Hot Springs lists James as a tavener. Thomas who married Lydia Kirkpatrick was a son of William and Judith Randall Sumpter of Virginia and North Carolina. Thomas served in the Revolution and his family is well documented using his pension application. Jane Sumpter Malone-George
Are there any other researchers of the Sumpter family from the Mulberry Gap area of Hancock Co. TN? Thomas_spradling@merck.com
I found a few articles on Sumpters from ARK and was wondering if anyone can identify them for us. Also anyone want to claim J.J. Sumpter? I also found an article on him and it has hisa picture in it. The book I found them in is called, "A REMINISCENT HISTORY OF The OZARK REGION " I was looking for any info on my Brown family while looking for others of course. The first reference to Kilgore I found was about "Members of Vigilance Committee," "Colonel Wm. Horner as the Vigilance Committee George W. Ferebee, Miler Irvin, N. Rightor, Thomas B. Handy, Davis Thompson, Thomas J. Lacy, James H. McKenzie, Wm. R. Sebastion, Wm. M. McPhearson, S.C. Mooney and S. R. Sumpter. On motion Colonel Wm. B.R. Horner and Silas Drury were added. This was the strongest vigilance committee ever authorized to act by any body of Citizens in Arkansas. Every man on the Committee was a lawe-abiding citizen, and every one of them was a terror to evil-doers. This vigilance committee was not to hang nor burn the culprit. It was to discover him, arrest him and put him in Jail for trial. A reward of one thousand dollars was also raised and offered for the apprehension of the murderer. This committee made a raid on the dark corners of Helena and of St. Francis township. All suspicious Characters were arrested and put through merciless examinations, but all to no purpose. The murderer was not found. The effect, however was magical. The bad and suspicious characters left the place and for twenty-five years Helena had no such diabolical outrage to contend against. The pioneers deserve our grateful rememberance for removing from our pathway many of the ruder dangers of earlier civilization. The descendants of this vigilance committee are numerous and should take an added pride from the fact that their ancestors, when courage was needed, did not shirk at the task." Recently I have received queries about two Sumpter women - unknown Sumpter woman may have married a McLendon probably in either South or North Carolina about 1790. A John Sumpter McLendon was born 1793 in North Carolina and the Sumpter middle name was passed to three descendants during the 1800s. This John Sumpter McLendon married Jane McLaughlin and lived first in Alabama and later in Texas where his will was written in 1863. The second woman is Margaret Sumpter who married Joseph Warnock probably sometime after 1780 in either South or North Carolina. This couple left the area about 1806 moving first to Ohio, later to Indiana and then on to Putnam Co, Illinois about 1829. Unfortunately, I do not have any information about these two women in my Sumpter/Sumter card file. Does someone have data or possible parents for these two women? All help will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks. Jane Sumpter Malone-George jmgeorge@dubuque.net
