Hi Sharon and Jim In response to your response about Nettie Sumpter. My records show that Bernette (Nettie) Sumpter was born about 1874 in KY. In fact, Sharon, my file says you gave me the data. Did I send you the following: H. L. Sumpter born 1842 KY could be Henry, son of Jordan and Polly Overstreet Sumpter of Wayne Co, KY. The 1850 census of Wayne Co, KY, lists an 8 year old Henry T. as a son of Jordan and Mary Sumpter. I believe the name Overstreet is what led me to think H. L. (or T.) is the son of Jordan. Jordan Sumpter was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Coffey Sumpter who married in Burke Co, NC, and moved to Wayne Co, KY, about 1825 - 1828. Thomas was a son of John and Catherine (possibly Van Pelt) Sumpter and John was a brother of General Thomas Sumter. Jordan married Mary Polly Overstreet 4 April 1834 in Wayne Co, KY. James Coffey was surety for the marriage and D. Duncan was the minister. The list of children and their birthdates are taken from the 1850 and 1860 census. Charlotte b 1835, John L (or P) b 1840, Henry T (or L) b 1842, Elizabeth b 1844, Sophronia b 1848 and Francis M b 1852. My data comes from several sources: Harold Sumpter's book; Harold lives in Turney, MO, and also descends from John and Catherine Sumpter. Jacqueline Sexton's book, Coffeys of Wayne Co; Wayne Co, KY, Vital Records, Vol 2,1973. I shall repeat this since I believe you sent it: H. L. and the children are listed on the 1880 Soundex Census of Wayne Co, MO with the youngest child being listed as born in 1878 in KY. Conclusion, the family moved to Missouri after that child's birth but before 1880. I wonder if the mother died in childbirth. Jordan's birth date is given as @1813 and he died 1 Dec 1852 in Wayne Co, KY. He was listed as a farmer. I hope this helps with your searching. Jane Sumpter Malone-George
In response to Jim Young's query about Nettie Sumpter b 1877: A 4 year old Nettie Sumpter is listed as a grandaughter of George and Anna Sumpter on the 1880 Federal Census of Iron County, Dent Township, Missouri. There are six grandchildren ranging in age from 4 to 10 living in this household. Unfortunately, I do not know the parentage of these children but perhaps the census records of 1860 and 1870 would help. George and Anna (Ritter ?) Sumpter are listed in Reynolds Co, MO, on the 1850 Federal Census. Both were born in Indiana. Good luck with your research....if I can help more, let me know. Jane Sumpter Malone-George
Does anyone have any information on the parents of Nettie F. Sumpter who was born 1877 in Lesterville, perhaps in Reynolds Co., MO. She was married to Henry Miner in March of 1896 and died sometime shortly after 1910. She is buried in the Miner Cemetery, believed to be in the town of Reynolds. This line belongs to Don Miner in Denver, CO. Thanks, Jim Young

Good Evening everyone. Just wanted to drop you a note and say Hello. One of Hollie and I's best friends got sent to Italy for four months, I think as part of this crap in Kosovo. I am sure he is not on the "frontline" or anything but I would like to have some postcards sent to him just to say Hello and that we are all supporting them overthere. We are going to send him one from New York and I would like to see if you could take a few minutes and write him and say "hi" from your particular state. I am sure he would realy get a kick out of it! You don't have to but I thought it would be cool to send him postcards from different places and let them know we are behind them. And, if you want to send a care package of snack food (M and Ms, etc...), magazines, newspapers, or whatever, I know Brett will share stuff with the other US military men and women over there. Here is his address: SRA Brett R. Hilfiger 20 TRNS/ LGTO 40 ELS/ LGT APO AE 09345 God Bless! Respectfully, Eric De Kraai
Good Morning everyone! I just wanted to let ya'll know that my wife and I will be traveling to Sumter, SC at the end of next month. Among other things, we are going to go see the Sumter Family Park and Cemetery while we are there. I will take plenty of pictures and if anyone is interested in getting a copy of a picture of General Sumter's gravesite email me at: dekraai@taconic.net and I will make a copy for you. Depending on how the picture turns out I may have it enlarged to a 8x10. My camera usually takes great pictures so enlarging it should not be a problem at all. Anyway, feel free to email me and let me know if you are interested. I just thought the photo of the grave and the cemetery would be something neat to add to your scrapbook, unless you all already have a picture of it. Have a great day!! Respectfully, A Sumpter Cousin Eric De Kraai http://www.taconic.net/dekraai
Threaded archives have been made available for the SUMPTER list at the website below. Currently, only archives from Feb 1999 are available; however, eventually messages posted in prior years will be added to the threaded archive site. After visiting this website, it will become obvious why meaningful subject lines are essential for every message posted on the list and also on a reply to that message. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/SUMPTER-L/ Note: If your cursor turns into a hand when placed upon the website address, double clicking your mouse will normally activate your web browser and open the webpage. Otherwise, it is recommended that the website address be copied and pasted into the web browser's address box. "Copy" and "Paste" means: (1) highlight the website address in the email message by dragging the mouse cursor across it while holding down the mouse's left click button (right-handed person): (2) "copy" (using Control-C, or Edit/copy) the website; (3) click in the browser's address box to highlight the current address; (4) "paste" (using Control-V, or Edit/paste) the website into the browser's address box; and, (5) press the "Enter" key on the keyboard. After clicking on one of the archives for a particular month, i.e. "1999-02/": (1) Accept the cookie if your browser is set not to accept cookies; (2) Create a username and password if you haven't already done so by clicking on the "here" link (or otherwise, enter your established username and password) and follow the instructions; (3) click the browser's "Back" button until returning to the webpage titled "Welcome to Rootsweb Threaded Mailing List Archives! "; and, (4) enter your newly established username and password, then click on the "Login now" button. WALLA!!!! You should be at the new SUMPTER threaded archives. I've just received the probate records (no will) on Isom Sumpter who died Feb 1833, in Owen Co IN. I had hoped for proof that Isom was the father of Littleton L. I have more evidence, but not proof. The record states, " Susannah Sumpter widow of Isom Sumpter and Loven Sumpter, Harvey Sumpter, and Jesse Sumpter heirs of said Isom." I believe that Loven is Littleton because: 1) Littleton has a middle inital L. 2) Littleton named a son Jesse 3) Littleton's son Jesse name his son, Loven 4) Littleton's daughter was placed under the guardianship of Harvey Sumpter when Littleton died. Can anyone shed any more light on this dilemna? Am I seeing what I want to see? or does this rationale make sense? Thanks for any assistance. Suzanne

Thomas married Elizabeth Coffey (daughter of Reuben) in Burke Co, NC. They had the following children: John, Jordan, Mary (Polly), Elizabeth, Catherine, Elinor and Thomas E. The family moved to Wayne Co, KY, abt 1819. Harold Sumpter of Turney, MO., Dr. Ward Sumpter of KY, are the primary sources for the above data. Thomas B. Sumpter born 15 Dec 1761 Albemarle Co,VA, was the son of Capt. William and Judith Randall Sumpter. This Thomas served as a private in the North Carolina Line during the Revolution and his family is well documented in his pension application. Children: Jean (Jenny), John, James, Robert, William, Betsy Ann, Susannah, Lydia, Mary, Edward, Elvira and Sally. Thomas died 15 Jan 1845 in Knox Co,TN. Another Thomas Sumpter was born about this same time in Virginia. He was the son of Edmund and Anne ? Sumpter. He married May Todd 15 Aug 1801 in Charlotte Co, VA. Census records for 1810 list children in Thomas' house but these children are unknown to me. Jane Sumpter Malone-George > > > > > > > > > >
Can anyone tell me who the father of Thomas Sumpter was. Thomas Sumpter born in 1769 in Albemarle CO VA. Is there any record of him in VA and if so what records are there and who was his parents. I spoke to my Uncle today and he said that he was told that the Sumpters were from Ireland, but if memory is correct they were from England right? Now why is no one sending or posting any info on here or on the myfamily site. I will be uploading my disc just as soon as I get all of the census information added into it.
