    2. Eric De Kraai
    3. You Know You are a Genealogy Addict when ... You brake for libraries. You hyperventilate at the sight of an old cemetery. You would rather browse in a cemetery than a shopping mall. You would rather read census schedules than a good book. You are more interested in what happened in 1697 than 1997. Moses, Dorcas, and Caleb are household names, but you cannot remember what to call the dog. You can pinpoint Sewickely, McKeesport, Evans City (PA) but can't locate your own state capital on the map. You think every home should have a copier and a microfilm reader. You know every register of deeds in the state by name, but they lock the doors when they see yuo are coming. You store your clothes under the bed, because your closet is full of books and papers. All your correspondence begins, "Dear Cousin". You have traced every one of your ancestral lines back to the Cro-Magnons, have it documented and still don't want to quit.

    1. [SUMPTER] Know of anyone expecting?
    2. Eric De Kraai
    3. If you know of anyone who is expecting a baby (besides us, as we have already requested a copy) please pass this on to them: State Farm Insurance offers a free copy of "The Mayo Clinic's Complete Book of Pregnancy and Baby's First Year." All you have to do is call them at: 1-888-733-8368 and ask for a copy. The book is a great asset, it is over 700 pages! And, you need not have State Farm insurance, can't beat that can you? They ship the book out via UPS. Take Care! Eric

    2. Eric De Kraai
    3. Thanks to all of the Sumpter cousins that wrote to me and let me know that I am still signed up and the list is up and running (although the messages are FEW and FAR BETWEEN!) I have been go go go, I went to South Carolina and did some research while I was there and I will be emailing you all with what I found. While I was there, I took pictures of the gravesite of General Sumter (I will be emailing the photos soon) and I got to look at the "Draper Manuscripts." John David Sumpter, Sr., wrote some letters to Draper and talked about his family and I have copies of them and I will transcribe them and email to the Sumpter list shortly. Thanks again! 1. [SUMPTER] Coziah Sumpter
    2. Hi Pat I am sending a copy of this to the rootsweb; perhaps someone out there can help determine who Coziah married. You wrote that Coziah Sumpter of 1850 Greenup Co, KY, Census was your ggg grandmother and you believe that her husband was a George Sumpter who died prior to the 1840 census. All of Coziah's children listed Virginia as birth state. Coziah's daughter Matilda married William Tio (Tyo) 11 May 1842 in Henry Co, VA, and the surety was Andrew Sumpter, possibly Matilda's brother. You state that you descend from Matilda Sumpter Tio (Tyo). There was an Edmund Sumpter who lived in Charlotte Co, VA. After his death prior to 1800, a 1797 deed lists Edmund's heirs as Mary Anne, William who married Betsy Wheeler in 1790 and eventually settled in Warren Co, KY; Thomas who married Mary Todd in 1801; Martha; Aggy; Andrew; Nanny; John who married Hannah Morrison in 1805 and settled in Giles Co,VA; and Susannah who married a Tackett. Much of this data comes from the papers of Dr. Ward Sumpter of Bowling Green, KY. It is generally believed that this Edmund was a son of the William and Elizabeth Sumpter of Albemarle Co, VA. There was a George Sumpter - wife Elizabeth - of Montgomery Co, VA. He had the following children: Richard b 1767 married Mary Kingery and settled in Southern Ohio; Sarah married John Jones; Edmund b 1770 married Elizabeth Kingery; Agnes married Charles Greer; George, Jr b 1788 married Catherine Prillaman in 1808; and Polly married Abraham Tice. This data was researched and documented by Curtis Sumpter of Floyd, VA. George, Jr., appears on the Floyd County, VA, tax list in 1831 and I believe he and his wife are listed on the Saline Co, Arkansas, 1850 census. Andrew Sumpter appears in Virginia Census records from 1810 Charlotte Co to 1830 and 1840 Henry Co. Judging by the age of the eldest male in all of these households, it would appear that Andrew lived to the age of 80 plus and probably passed away sometime after 1840 making his birth date about 1760. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, while there are many children listed in Andrew's households, they are not known to researchers. Pat, I am sorry that the above data does not answer your questions. However, perhaps it will let you know of Sumpter men who cannot be Coziah's husband. Is there anyone on the SUMPTER-L rootsweb who can help us sort through these people? Perhaps we can get some discussion going again!! Jane Sumpter Malone-George

    1. [SUMPTER] Sumpter/Sumter's buried in Knox County
    2. Debbi McKay
    3. It is my intention over the next couple of weeks, since the weather is starting to cool down a bit, that I'm going to be doing some searching of some of Knox County, TN's oldest graveyards. I'll be looking for SUMPTER/SUMTER's in these locations. Since the SUMPTER/SUMTER family is one of the First Families of Tennessee, having lived here before Tennessee gained statehood, I do believe this will not be a difficult task. One must keep in mind that I will not be able to accomplish this without the assistance of you all. If you know your ancestor is buried in Knox County, TN and you know which graveyard this ancestor is buried in, I'll be more than happy to go to the location and take a picture of the site, and will also look up in the Knoxville News-Sentinel morgue as well any other old newspaper source I can locate, and see if I can find an obit on this person as well. I'm not a miracle worker, but I am trying to keep my mind off of the cancer that is in my body at the present time, and would appreciate being kept busy (although not too busy, as I do have family obligations). Deborah (Debbi) McKay - Searching: Bullock, Carver, Christian, Conrad, Cowden, Didlake, Gibson, Hill, Hornbeck, Lambert, Myers, Olinger/Ohlinger, Smallwood, Sumpter/Sumter, Walsh, Yeager (and many, many more)

    1. [SUMPTER-L] John Elias Sumpter of Carthage, MO,1865
    2. John Elias Sumpter is gg gran. and he was married to a woman named Doan Dennis and in a wagon crossing of the "big Muddy", Mo. River, the wagon overturned and the wife died. The two babies, Madeline and Polly(male) were saved and John and a mule. The family traveled two days and almost dead from lack of food and water, they encountered a family living on the prarie in a sod house. The family took them in and the woman nursed the baby and their lives were saved. They lived with the family for almost a year and some of their family from Kansas came to get the Sumpters and they said their goodbye's to the family that saved them. Grandpa John said to the family that he surely was in their debt and all he had to give them was his thanks. The man looked at his wife and said to John, well, It would be thanks enough if you would let us use your last name, as we were slaves and do not have a last name. Grandpa John said that he would be proud and pleased toshare his name with his friends. Then, he took the children and went into Kansas, met a woman named annie Pearl (Criss) and married her and had more kids -settling in Oklahoma. I am looking for persons of color-who have been long time kansas residents, that bear the sirname SUMPTER. Also, would like to know if there are any of the Dennis family in Kansas or in Mo. that know of a female member by the name of Doan Dennis Sumpter. I think she had a sister by the name of DOVE Dennis. This story was told to me by the child of Annie Pearl Criss Sumpter in 1960. I just thought it would be fun to try and prove it with the people that it happened to. Would really appreciate anyone on the web with access to census in Mo. around Joplin in 1880's or death records to see if you can find a female doan dennis married to a john elias sumpter? Also, if you know of dennis familys or Sumpter familys--lets try to find some documentation of this story. thanks for all help. judy hugg grimes

    1. [SUMPTER-L] Classified Ads Boards
    2. Jim & Mary Pat Young
    3. Hello SUMPTER list members, There is a new resource, Classified Ads Boards, that can now be found from a link on the cluster page for the SUMPTER surname and variations. As you know the Cluster page serves as a navigation aid to all resources for the SUMPTER surname housed on RootsWeb. The Cluster page for the SUMPTER surname can be found at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/s/u/SUMPTER/ You know that advertising (even when it can be helpful in our genealogical research) is generally not allowed on our mailing list and GenConnect boards. In an effort to help genealogists locate genealogical items, or list items being offered for sale, for example, out of print books you might be looking to sell or purchase, RootsWeb has created Classifieds at RootsWeb. These Classified Ad Boards work in the same way the GenConnect boards work and are only to be used for items of a genealogical nature pertaining to the surname shown on the board. These boards provide an outlet to help in our research for items that couldn't be properly listed elsewhere on RootsWeb. Enjoy them and use them to your best advantage!
