ATTENTION: All SUMPTER list members. For the past four years in search of my ancestors, I've been collecting SUMPTER data and entering it into my Family Origins genealogy software program. For the purpose of generating activity and discussion, about every two or three weeks, I'm hoping to put different SUMPTER/SUMTER lines and/or family groups on the SUMPTER list. As a result of others joining the discussion and sharing their data, perhaps overtime, I will be able to put together a comprehensive SUMPTER/SUMTER database linking the majority the descendants to their immigrant SUMPTER ancestor. I have no intentions of selling the database or publishing a book; however, at some point, I will probably distribute the data to organizations for free use by other SUMPTER researchers. Such repositories could be: Ancestry.com; LDS in Salt Lake City; RootsWeb World GenConnect, etc. This post is a first in a series of posts for the purpose of generating activity on the list, possibly assisting descendants of this line and requesting additional information to complete family groups including soliciting comments on any errors. These posts are not intended to be the source documentation for any connection; rather, the information should be viewed as a clue to where/when the connections can be documented and for initiating further research. Ancestors of Robert Osborn SUMPTER and Erbin SUMPTER will follow later. thanks for taking info from several sources and making it known to all. I appreciate your help and the brain power to put all the puzzle pieces together. However, I do wish that it be given for free-never sold. I don't think information freely traded among familys is something we would enjoy having our descendents have to pay for to get from ancestry.com or other pay for view search engines. I am not against free enterprise at all and I believe those businesses are a great help to us. But, I do have a little qualm-okay, a big one, against sending in gedcoms and then having them sold back to me the next month on a cd or by paying a fee to access. Thank you for giving me credit for sending in the info-but I must tell you that the obits and the hard docs were kept lovingly in a old scrapbook by Belle Forrest Sumpter Gullett and she would be blessed to know that her descendents were treasuring the knowledge within those writings. Please, do not put this on the web if you think it will open up some kind of discussion war I think "flaming" is unfortunate. I do appreciate your work. Keep it up. judy grimes
Hi, I have never been past oklahoma-going east. So, can not give you directions for the Cain Ford Cemetery in Putnam co. Tennessee. I found the listing on the tennessee, web page-genweb under cemetery-I believe there were several counties listed. The directions were posted with the information. I did not copy them-sorry. I guess it is a lesson for me. I will copy the directions from now on. Maybe someone at the rootsweb mailing list could help? I do not have the url either-red faced in CA. Judy grimes
Am curious about this Sumpter...does anyone know where this Margaret was born and married, especially during this time period. Two years ago, Dick Warnock emailed me asking about Margaret and if I had any information about her parents and sibblings. Unfortunately, I can only guess about Margaret's parents. Dick Warnock, if you are on the Sumpter rootsweb, perhaps you and Susan can compare notes. I am sorry to say that I lost your email address, Dick, or I would just send it to Susan. It is so nice to finally see the action on this board. It has been a long time in coming but all it takes is one of us and then we take off again. I am still looking for the descendants of my Letha Sumpter. Recently I found a distant cousin who has information on Letha's full siblings. What I mean by full is the children from Johns Mariage to Mary Lawson. Ok now anyone can correct me if I am wrong in any way on Mary. I accept it with no ill will. Lucinda married Johnathon Eoff then married an unkown Mr. Williams. Just always looking in high hopes of finding something somewere that will tell me anythign more on her. Thank you all for a great job. On the 8th, day of June 1879, I obtained a marriage license from G.W. Wilson, County Judge of Pontatoo County Chickasaw Nation Indian Territory and on said day and date intermarried with Nancy Gibson, a Choctaw Indian by blood who has always been known and recognized as a full blood Choctaw Indian according to the laws and customs then prevailing in the Indian Territory. Hello all, Got this off another list and found it interesting. Thought some of you might enjoy as we think of our relatives at the beginning of the "previous" century. Michele (From a book called "When My Grandmother Was a Child" by Leigh W. Rutledge, which begins, "In the summer of 1900, when my grandmother was a child...") - The average life expectancy in the United States was forty-seven. - Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States had a bathtub. - Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. - There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was ten mph. - Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first most populous state in the Union. - The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. - The average wage in the US was twenty-two cents an hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. - A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year. - More than 95 percent of all births in the United States took place at home. - Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." - Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. - Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. - Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants. - The five leading causes of death in the US were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza, 2. Tuberculosis, 3. Diarrhea, 4. Heart disease, 5. Stroke. - The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. - Drive-by shootings -- in which teenage boys galloped down the street on horses and started randomly shooting at houses, carriages, or anything else that caught their fancy -- were an ongoing problem in Denver and other cities in the West. - The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was thirty. The remote desert community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their families. - Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. - There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. - One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. - Some medical authorities warned that professional seamstresses were apt to become sexually aroused by the steady rhythm, hour after hour, of the sewing machine's foot pedals. They recommended slipping bromide-which was thought to diminish sexual desire-into the women's drinking water. - Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." - Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine. - Punch-card data processing had recently been developed, and early predecessors of the modern computer were used for the first time by the government to help compile the 1900 census. - Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic. - There were about 230 reported murders in the US annually.

I hope this isn't plagerism. I'm copying this out of the book "Gamecock- The Life and Campaigns of General Thomas Sumter." by Robert D. Bass. I hope it helps some of you. Page 258 paragraph 2 "Sumter is from "sumpter," a word which comes from Old French sommetier, which is derived from Latin sagma, a packsaddle. Sumpter designates an animal used to transport baggage, as a sumpter horse, and also a driver of such animals. In England in the thirteenth century sumpter changed from an occupation to a proper name. Family tradition says that the Sumpters came from Wales. Thomas Sumter spelled his name Sumpter or Sumter. On January 31, 1792, he signed his congressional pay voucher as Thomas Sumpter, but on March 2, 1792, and thereafter he signed it Thomas Sumter.

Thank you for the posting to try to answer the "p" question. In the family in Pawhuska I suppose if a sumpter marries a sumter--theres enough generations apart to not cause concern? judy
Barbara, I am just trying to answer in order you sent. This sumpter and sumter-thing. I sent it out on roots web and this morning got a question if they were indian lineage? I said I don't think so, but grandma gullett said that the nora buckhardus (HARGIS) thing ---she thought was Indian. So, do you have any documentation that the native american line comes into the sumpter/sumter familys through the Hargis line? Judy Also, someone said that the Sumter was a general who decided to take out the "P". Do you have any legends or docs on that? JUDY
