The Draper papers I have only mention Robert O. Sumter in them, alone with his sister Caroline. It says he was a tanner and was the Son of John Sumter and Sarah Emily Miller. I will look more there are so many I have not even read. These Sumpter burial places were personally observed by me on 25 August 1999 at the Pump Cemetery in Iron County Missouri. Many Iron County cemeteries are transcribed and available for download at the Iron County GenWeb page. My records on this seem to be in a little more detail. After about looking at the first fourth of the alphabet (cemeteries) , no other Sumpter burials are yet found. Emmitt Sumpter 8/26/1920-3/31/1996 Jerry Dean Sumpter 3/18/1951-2/10/1995 Ruth E Sumpter 7/9/1950-4/8/1952 Shirley A Sumpter 11/30/1936-10/16/1938 Levi Sumpter 1896-1938 Quincy Sumpter 1/28/1897-6/24/1961 Rosie Sumpter 3/30/1907-7/8/1987 Hope this helps someone. I am trying to find Jane Sumpter enumerated 1880 Iron County with children Samuel, Peter, Louisa and Annie. Relatively speaking Byron Nelson
My GGrandmother was Georgia Etta SUMPTER, daughter of Robert Osborn SUMPTER and Margaret V. PITNER. Much information was given to me from a relative in Tahlequah, OK. She lists the Draper Papers as a source. Can someone please tell me what they are? Thanks, April Ruygt Napa, CA april@napanet.net

According to researcher, Rhonda Fleming Smith (no longer on the SUMPTER list and without source documentation), in early 1997 she alleged George SUMPTER (married to Elizabeth GROSS) was born 5 Feb 1713 in Richmond, VA, resided (date unknown) in Manchester area, Chesterfield Co, VA, married (date unknown) in Charlotte, VA, resided 1781 in Henry Co., VA and died 1806 in Montgomery Co., VA. When I asked Rhonda Fleming Smith, privately, to share her documentation sources, she indicated that she did not share her research documentation with the public. She shortly thereafter unsubscribed from the SUMPTER list and I'm not aware of her returning to the list under her known email address or a new address. I've just now looked at the history and establishment of Chesterfield County and Charlotte County in Virginia (below). It appears to me that King William Parish records, where Richard SUMPTER and Richard SUMTER paid tithes in 1744, may provide additional SUMPTER data. I'll search the LDS catalog for filmed records in both Chesterfield and Charlotte Counties and post the findings on this list. Chesterfield County was formed in 1749 from the original shire of Henrico. Parishes: Dale, King William (also Cumberland Co. 1749- 1777 & Powhatan Co. 1777- ), Manchester 1772- Charlotte County was founded in 1765, as provided by an act of the General Assembly. The ancestry of Charlotte can be traced down from Charles City County, Prince George County, Brunswick County and Lunenburg County. Early Charlotte County names are found in the Vestry Book of Cumberland Parish until the formation of Cornwall Parish in 1757. Regards, Jim Young
I seem to recall the view that the General's ancestors in England were adopted and it was not clear if the Sumpter name was theirs or that of the individuals that adopted them. The General also thought his relatives were from Wales. Jim I have been all over all counties and never found a James Gerald. It is very possible that James Gerald was an agent who lived in England and worked for others in the colonies. No other trace of George Sumpter either until the one supposedly married to Elizabeth Gross. I spent about half a year trying to track down either one. Jim Landrum

I have searched the "Family History Library Catalog" for Virginia public records and publications on LDS microfilm and microfiche. Please do not consider this to be an all inclusive list for general Virginia records or for Hanover, Henrico, Goochland, Cumberland and Powhatan Counties because I could have overlooked some of the filmed records. Other than errors on the part of LDS in cataloging and indexing the items, there should not be any error on my part since I transferred all entries via copy and paste. However, I may have duplicate or more enrtries for a particular filmed record or publication. Please forgive me. <grin> Those wishing to concentrate their research on William SUMPTER allegedly marrying Elizabeth Patience Iveson (widow) may wish to review the Hanover, Co., VA records. Those wishing to concentrate their research on Richard SUMPTER and Richard SUMTER in King William Parish associated with the Huguenots may wish to review the Henrico, Goochland, Cumberland and Powhatan Co., VA records. King William Parish was formed in 1700 and was originally in Henrico County until 1728. From 1728-1749 the parish was in Goochland and Henrico counties, then in Cumberland County from 1749-1777 and finally in Powhatan County from 1777 to present. Of course, the general records of Virginia are of interest to all of us. If anyone has reviewed or intends to review any of these records, please advise and post the transcribed record or abstracted publication either on the SUMPTER list or GenConnect board or on both . I have a hard copy of "The Douglas Register" and have reviewed it for SUMPTER data; thus, posting the abstracted data on the SUMPTER GenConnect Boards. Those wishing not to personally post on the GenConnect Boards can request that I do the posting for them; then, I'll take the data from their post to the SUMPTER list and post it on the GenConnect Board. Besides the Courthouses, the majority of public records can probably be transcribed from LDS film. Perhaps, the greatest challenge will be finding the LDS film having the SUMPTER/SUMTER data. If someone needs assistance in transcribing a record, I'm sure someone on the list, including myself, would assist in transcribing the record if a photocopy of the record was provided via snail mail. Following are two SUMPTER GenConnect Boards where I've entered records. Please review each board as to my thoughts on recording SUMPTER/SUMTER records. Please make a mental note that I have the capability to edit errors or make required changes on all of the boards. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/sum/SumpterBibl http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/sum/SumpterDeed The other boards available for posting SUMPTER/SUMTER data are as follows: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/sum/SumpterObits http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/sum/SumpterPens http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/sum/SumpterWill http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/sum/SumpterBios I'm open to any suggestions on the above and how to go about formatting (summarizing or consolidating) early SUMPTERs in VA. Thanks, Judy - ------------------------------------- I have this Coat of Arms scanned in black & white. The Sumpter Coat of Arms Illustrated above was drawn by an heraldic artist from information officially recorded in ancient heraldic archives. Documentation for the Sumpter Coat of Arms design can be found in Burke's General Armory. Heraldic artists of old developed their own unique language to describe an individual Coat of Arms. In their language, the Arms (shield) is as follows: "Ar, three boars pass. in pale sa." When translated the Arms description is: "Silver, three black boars walking, one over the other." Family mottos are believed to have originated as battle cries in medieval times. A motto was not recorded with the Sumpter of Arms. Individual surnames originated for the purpose of more specific identification. The four primary sources for second names were: (1) occupation, (2) location, (3) father's name, and (4) personal characteristics. The surname Sumpter appears to be occupational in origin, and is believed to be associated with the English, meaning "one who served as a stableman." Different spellings of the same original surname are a common occurrence. Dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spelling variations. The most prominent variations of Sumpter are: Sumter, Sumnters, Sumnpter, Sumnpters and Sumpters. (sum'ter) noun. A pack animal such as a horse or mule. Or somebody for carrying things. (Middle English sum(p)ter, sometour, driver of a pack animal; from Old French = som(m)etier; from Vulgar Latin = saumatarius (unattested); from Late Latin = Sama (pack saddle); from Greek = sattein (of obscure origin) to pack). >From research done in phonetics, there is an explanation for the insertion of the "p". Whenever ou have a voice continuant consonant such as "m" followed by a voiceless positive "t", there is a natural tendency for the mouth to insert another voiceless articulated in similar manner to the consonant that precedes it. Thus, a "p" is formed following the "m" with the audible, it is thus spelled as it is heard. Don't assume that the insertion of the "p" in "Sumpter" began in America. First inscription and mention of the surname is William le Sumeter in 1221 and Roger le Summeter in 1270, taken from the Assize Rolls Gloucester shire England and the Assize Rolls of Worcestershire. The name is also mentioned in 1320 in Surrey, England. In 1404 (England) there was a conspiracy to kill King Henry IV in his fifth year of reign. Implicated in the conspiracy were John Sumpter, Sr. and John Sumpter, Jr. of Essex County. Also, in 1642-46 the name Eill Sumpter was given in connection with a list of inventories from the Lands of Ireland. Shakespeare's play King Lear, Act II, Scene IV, "Persuade me, rather to be, a slave and sumpter." The Will of William (dated Nov 1752) uses ”Sumter". However, that depends on who wrote it. Supposedly being well educated, he probably had it spelled correctly as he normally wrote it himself. So it was probably "Sumter". General Thomas, his son, used "Sumter" as did Captain William, Thomas' brother; but have seen Thomas' name and those of his brothers also spelled ” Sumpter".

Would the Draper paper be of use. I have nearly 100 copies of letter regarding the Sumpter/Sumter. If you could give me the number of the letter I could send it or does it have a copyright. Barbara Jones
I would like to propose a project to identify SUMPTERs residing or born in Virginia in the 1700s based on documented records (deeds, wills, probates, tithes, birth, marriage, death, pension, immigration, bondage, etc.) and showing their documented ancestor(s), spouse(s) and children. Secondary sources, as long as identified as such, could be used in identifying some SUMPTERs. Perhaps, some of this data would show a migration path for some of our SUMPTER/SUMTER lines. At the moment, these documented facts are fragmented among us SUMPTER researchers; therefore, I suggest that we attempt to consolidate our findings in order to possibly provide clues on our individual SUMPTER/SUMTER ancestral line back to our emigrant SUMPTER. I also propose that we initiate another project to transcribe public records and abstract any copyrighted publications and post them, in addition to the SUMPTER list, on the SUMPTER GenConnect Boards which I administer. These SUMPTER related public records and copyrighted publications could range from the earliest to the latest SUMPTER record in England, USA and elswhere. Comments are solicited. Jim Young

Thanks, Judy >> Judy: I figured I may as well as jump into this conversation. I have the book, The Gamecock the life of Gen. Thos Sumter and in the book it notes that he spelled his name in one place as Sumpter and in another as Sumter. Suspect it is the same family with different spellings and then there is the possibility that the person taking the information on census couldn't spell and the name sounded like SUMTER and then it is also easier to pronounce with the P to separate the M and T. Try it both ways...or as a lot of people call Mrs. Sumpner and there is no N in it... Will get exact quote for you over the weekend... Bev Sumpter
Jim Good idea. I know there is a lot out there that I don't have and would like to see. Actually possessed. How would we go about it?? You are the computer whiz. I would love to help. Hello DdHober@aol.com , I am a newbie to the Sumpter mailing list and noticed your statement to the list, >> If anyone wishes to visit the site please email me and I will go in and add your name to the list. >> I am in search of a Jacob F. Sumpter who was born in Monroe Co (W)VA ca. mid 1800's. He lived in Roane County WV at the time of his marriage to Sarah C. Norman Parsons in Calhoun Co. (1909). Would you please add my name to the list of those who may visit the site? I'd appreciate it VERY much! Thanks for your time. Floa Swisher

Some of it made sense, and other parts made me more confused. If you have not seen this book some library may have it and you can get through inter- library loan.
