Dear Sumpter researchers. I applaude your efforts. In doing genealogy for over 40 years, I have learned that sometimes our" BSOGS" have sometimes, the only logical place in the recovery of information....Best Soap Opera Guesses 's.......sincerely, judy hugg grimes.
I believe the Hanover County connection comes from the Draper manuscripts. Letters from people of Albemarle County, Virginia, date in the 1870's, say that the Sumpter's lived on Preddy Creek in now Albemarle County. This County came down as follows: New Kent 1720 Hanover 1742 Louisa - Where Williams's will recorded 1744 Albemarle As previously noted New Kent is burned. Hanover is burned. I feel early researchers were taking leaps we have not been prepared to take. Next theory The supposed son of William, Edmond, is supposedly in Lunenburg County in 1764 and Charlotte from then on. Charlotte is out of Lunenburg in 1764. A George, Henry, and Aggy Sumpter are tied to this Edmond as witnesses on a deed. Perhaps George, Edmond, and Henry are all brothers and sons of either Richard or William. They all show up for the first time in the mid 1760's. The only sons of William for sure are John and William who both move on to North Carolina. This would cancel my earlier theory that Henry and Edmond are George's sons. This also would tie into Alexander Sumpter's notes when he says they have an Uncle John (William's son) who has a son William who both served in the revolution. As I have noted before this note matches John Sumpter, son of William (Father to the General) I think now I have put all the scenerios possible out there. I believe in covering all my bases in case someone (Please) who finds the key to this family.
I've seen many researchers claiming their ancestors are William Sumpter and Elizabeth Patience Iveson (Iverson), alleging to have married in Hanover Co., VA on 18 June 1728, and further linking to Nicholas Sumpter born abt 1663 in Histon, Cambridge, England and Katherine Mathews. Has anyone seen or found a ship's passenger manifest indicating the transportation of William Sumpter (Sumter) and/or Elizabeth Patience Iveson (Iverson) from Histon, Cambridge, England to Virginia or the Colony in the early 1700s? If such records cannot be found, how can William Sumpter, alleged to have married 1728 in Hanover Co., VA, be linked as a son of Nicholas Sumpter, born abt 1663 in Histon, Cambridge, England and Katherine Mathews? Has anyone seen or found any marriage record indicating William and Elizabeth Patience Sumpter (Sumter) were married on 18 June 1728 in Hanover Co., VA or ever resided in Hanover Co., VA? If such records cannot be found, how can a researcher continue to claim that William Sumpter (Sumter) and Elizabeth Patience Iveson (Iverson) were married on 18 June 1728 in Hanover Co., VA and that Elizabeth's married or maiden name was Iveson (Iverson)? Since there is no known record of William Sumpter's arrival in Virginia and the fact that he appears to be too old to be a child of Richard and Jean Sumpter of Goochland, Cumberland and Chesterfield Counties in Virginia, has anyone given any thought to William's name being George William Sumpter and later being only known as "William". At the moment in limbo, there is a record of a George Sumpter, age 19, St. Brides, Fleet St., London, Brickmaker, who signed with agent James Gerald to serve a five year indenture in Virginia, 22 June 1721. By 1726, his indentured service would be completed allowing him to marry; however, nothing further is known about him. Could William, the father of General Thomas Sumter, be the 1721 George Sumpter immigrant to Virginia? Jim Landrum reports a Gorge Sumpter of St. Bride's Fleet Street London England who was christened January 7, 1697 and his parents were William and Elizabeth Sumpter. (Source: LDS film # 380155 Extracted birth and christening records for St. Bride's Fleet Street London England 1695-1714.) This is a close match for the 1721 George Sumpter immigrant to Virginia. Jim Landrum further reports a William Sumpter proving a deed of gift on 11 Apr 1733 in Caroline Co., VA which is right next to the Virginia Counties of Hanover and Louisa. (Source: Caroline County, Virginia County Clerk Aprill 11, 1733 ; Eliza Flemings deed of gift to John Scot and Nathan Anderson. Was proved by Robert Fleming, Barttelot Anderson and WILLIAM SUMPTER.) Could this be the 1721 George Sumpter immigrant to Virginia using an alias, "William"? Anyone care to discuss such a scenario and extend their research to include such a possibility. Warm regards, Jim Young
Does anyone out there have any public information on this guy. In Regards to deeds, the entire will, children's marriage records, etc. I believe him to have been in Charlotte County, Henry County, and Montgomery County. Was he ever in Franklin or Bedford County. Jim Landrum
A couple of tidbits picked up 2/7/2000 at Memphis Public Library >From the Draper manuscripts a letter dated 1872 was received from the Goochland County, Virginia, Clerk, stating that he had done a thorough job of investigating their records and no information was there on any Sumpter or Sumter. >From the Louisa County Court Order Book December 19, 1743 Upon the motion of William Sumtor it is ordered that his list of tithables be added to Ambrose Joshua Smith's list. (Shows William Sumpter was assigned at one time by the court to take tax information so he could read and write) Jim Landrum.
Jim, That makes as much sense as anything else we have tried to put together. The list of counties involving these Sumpters seems to be Caroline - Burned Hanover - Burned nothing before 1865 Goochland - In the Draper Manuscripts there is a letter dated 1872 from the Goochland County Clerk that he has thoroughly investigated their records and there is nothing on Sumpter or Sumter. Louisa County - William Sumpter's Will from the 1750's. Albemarle - Out of Louisa and Goochland in 1744. Other Counties possibly New Kent and King and Queen both burned counties. The Richard Sumpter line comes out of Henrico, Chesterfield Counties. My Henry Sumpter comes out of Cumberland and Henry Counties. If William Sumpter could be George William Sumter it leads to a different scenerio for me. The Edmond Sumpter son of William Sumpter is in Charlotte County in the 1760,s to 1790's. There is also a George Sumpter there at the same time that seems to have ties to both Edmond and Henry Sumpter (Witness on a George Sumpter deed).. Could this make George Sumpter another son of William Sumpter and Henry Sumpter, William's grandson. The can of worms opens further. Other counties needed to be looked at are Franklin and Bedford that have ties to Charlotte, Henry, and Montgomery Counties in the late 1700's. Jim Landrum
also posted at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/sum/SumpterObits WILLIAM JAKE SUMPTER: Killed Near Eagle Mine, OBITUARY Jake Sumpter, a farmer living northwest of town was hit by Huntsville pickup train. Last night about six o'clock Jake Sumpter left town on his way home. He had just delivered a load of wood in town for a neighbor who he was working for. There were three wood wagons left here together, he being the last one. When at the crossing near the Eagle Coal mine the other two wagons had crossed the track and his horses were just across when the pick-up train from Huntsville came along unnoticed and struck his wagon, throwing him from the wagon in front of the cars and he was passed over by three cars and the engine. The boys that were with him did not miss him until they were quite a distance away and they then saw his horses loose from the wagon. They returned to the crossing and found him, but the train crew brought him to the yard office and from there he was taken to the morgue. He was taken to his home this afternoon from which place the funeral will be held tomorrow. Burial will take place at the Hardister burial grounds. I suspect that the majority of SUMPTER and SUMTER descendants on this discussion list have their roots of origins in Virginia. With this in mind, I suggest we attempt to identify all documented SUMPTER and SUMTER marriages within each shire or county in Virginia, posting them on this list and the SUMPTER GenConnect Board. Documented marriages from other state counties are also welcome. Has anyone thoroughly reviewed and abstracted the SUMPTER data (including surname variations, Sumter, Simpter, Simter, etc.) from the following publications, either book, microfilm or microfiche? If so, please consider posting the data on this list or send it to me privately (email or snail mail) and I'll post the data on your behalf. If anyone would like to volunteer to review any of the publications, please advise. Miss Mary Elizabeth Sumpter died at her home in Higbee at 5 o'clock Friday morning, March 5, 1909, after a short illness of quick consumption, and was buried at New Hope Howard County, the following day. Services were held at the church by F.H. James in the presence of a large congregation of relatives and friends who faced the rough weather to pay tribute to one who was highly esteemed by them. Miss Sumpter was born April 9, 1884, and lived near Higbee until about two months ago when she went with a brother to Okla, whence she returned about a month ago. She is survived by three brothers - Charles, John and James and three sisters - Mrs. W. Robb, Mrs. S. Ketchum and a single sister, Miss Maggie. Copied from "The Higbee News"; Higbee, Randolph County, MO; 65257; Thur. 12 Mar 1909, d. 5 Mar 1909. (daughter of JAMES H. SUMPTER born Abt. 1847 in MO & CHINISH MERIDY born Abt. 1851 in MO)
What is the documentation of the other children of William Sumpter father of the general? Thanks Jim Landrum

I knew I had this somewhere and have spent two days reading my old notes. >From the Caroline County, Virginia County Clerk Aprill 11, 1733 Eliza Flemings deed of gift to John Scot and Nathan Anderson. Was proved by Robert Fleming, Barttelot Anderson and WILLIAM SUMPTER. This County is right next to Hanover and Louisa where the William Sumpter's have some tracks. I have not looked at any actual records of Caroline County except what few books are in the Memphis Library Jim Landrum
Has anyone found (or even seen) the marriage record for William Sumpter who is alleged to have married Elizabeth Patience Iverson (Iveson) in Hanover Co., VA on 18 June 1728? If so, where can the record be found? Has anyone found (or even seen) any Hanover Co., VA records to indicate that William Sumpter, father of General Thomas Sumter, ever resided in Hanover Co., VA? If so, where can the record(s) be found? According to the USGenWeb Project, Hanover County, Virginia was formed from New Kent County, Virginia on November 26, 1720. Further, USGenWeb Project states, "The Colonial Records of New Kent County were destroyed by a fire in 1787, which was set by John Price Posey, for which he was hung. It was the greatest loss suffered because the early records of many counties were in the New Kent Clerk's Office: King and Queen, 1654-1691; King William County, 1654 to 1702; Hanover County, 1654 to 1728; Louisa County, 1654 to 1728; and part of Caroline County, 1654 to 1720." Based on the above, records relating to William Sumpter and any ancestor in New Kent County and Hanover County from 1654 to 1728 are not available. Has anyone had an opportunity the review the following records for Sumpter data? The Vestry Book of Blisland Parish in New Kent and James City Counties, Virginia 1721 to 1786, edited by Dr. C.C. Chamberlayne, 1935, and published by Virginia State Library. The Vestry Book and Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, 1684 to 1786, edited by Dr. C.C. Chamberlayne, 1937, and published by Virginia State Library. Jim Young
