Hi Jim....you do find some interesting items. No idea what this means except could this Jane be an indentured servant and Johnson buys her time remaining? Altho, why would this be in a vestry book? Ah, perhaps she was indigent and a ward of the church possibly an elderly person or perhaps an orphan and Johnson agrees to take care of her for a fee paid by the parish. Similar, perhaps, to our foster parent programs. Comments? I am Nina Sumpter Strodtman, I found an article in my father's drawer after he passed away about Urbie Sumpter who was still racing at the age of 60 when this article was printed Oct.20, 1979. I thought it was my dad's uncle Raymond Sumpter's child but Raymond's obit said he left two daughter's Melva and Urbane. Thanks, Nina
In a previous post, I discussed William Sumter purchasing land in the 1770s, and possibly earlier, along "Preddy's Creek" in the northern part of Albemarle County, close up to the Orange County line and Elizabeth Patience Sumpter, widow, living in Albemarle County across the county line from John Redd in Orange County. This area known as Pretty's Creek, Priddy Creek and Priddys Creek in Albemarle Co., VA extending along the stream into Greene Co., VA where the county lines of Greene, Orange and Albemarle intersect can be viewed at the following USGS website below: http://mapping.usgs.gov:8888/gnis/owa/MapMultPoint?id=1472765 Scroll down below the topo map and click: "Zoom In" Happy Huntin' Jim Young
Hi Marv, No apology is necessary on your part in supporting Jim Landrum's post on offering to host a "Get Together". Your support is most welcome. It was only a matter of time before the proposed meeting would be discussed on the SUMPTER list. Since Jim Landrum discussed his willingness to host a meeting on the SUMPTER list, I felt it was time to be up-front with the on-going preliminary discussions between Jim L., Jane Malone-George and I regarding such a meeting. As far as I'm aware, neither of us have any problem with this issue being discussed on this public forum, now or in the future. All members are welcome to comment or participate in this discussion. A late summer or early fall meeting, this year in Memphis, TN, is being proposed to allow sufficient time to research early Virginia records and then organize the research data. In the meantime, it will take a little time for Jim Landrum to consult with hotels and motels on suitable dates and facilities for hosting such a meeting. After a meeting date is established, he will need to know how many would like to attend for purposes of booking a facility. I'm looking forward to a reunion of SUMTER and SUMPTER descendant researches and having an opportunity to rub shoulders with distant cousins. Warm regards, Jim Young
Jim I apologize for speaking out of context! I misunderstood Jim Landrum's mention of a get together to represent others & I am sorry for butting in. I think that Jim Landrum should have sent personal e-mail to both you & Jane about this matter. Sorry! Marv Caldwell
Jim: you list William Sumpter as giving deposition to below case in 1797. Is this the same William and Peggy Sumpter that lived in Hancock Co. TN in 1850? Jane Malone-George has suggested a meeting in late summer or fall to Jim Landrum and I for the purpose of discussing our SUMPTER / SUMTER research. I have asked Jim Landrum if he would consider hosting such a "Get Together" since he is about centrally located between Jane and I. And, as you have seen, he has graciously accepted to be the host. This is as far as the planning has gotten. However, as Marv Caldwell suggested, it would be great to rub elbows with distant cousins. Perhaps, other distant Sumpter/Sumter cousins would like attend this first "Get Together"; therefore, Jim Landrum, Jane or I will provide details on this proposed meeting as they develop. Anyone interested in attending the first "Get Together", are more than welcome to join us. Happy Huntin' Jim Young
