Suzanne....in response to your email about Isom Sumpter of Owen Co, IN, 1830: my census record shows 1 male under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 female 15-20 plus Ison and Susanna. Isom and Susanna's son Jesse wrote a book titled Paso de Aguila in which he said he had two brothers: Littleton L b 1819, Harvey P. b 1823 and Jesse b 1827. Jesse eventually settled in Texas where he wrote the book following his retirement from law enforcement. I read the book at the Newberry Library in Chicago, IL. Susanna had been married twice before: once to a Holt with whom she had two girls and two boys and once to a Rollings with whom she had 1 girl. Isom Sumpter and Susanna Loving were married 1 Feb 1816 in Burke Co, NC. If I can be of further help, let me know. Following is a North Carolina twist on George SUMPTER & Elizabeth GROSS. The data contained herein has more plausible and realistic birth and marriage dates for George SUMPTER & Elizabeth GROSS than the birthdates of 1713/1714 for George and Elizabeth Gross Sumpter being proposed by other researchers. Then again, we could be dealing with two separate couples named, George and Elizabeth Gross SUMPTER. Perhaps, George SUMPTER (married to Elizabeth GROSS) is not the same George and Elizabeth SUMPTER associated with Henry SUMPTER in Henry Co., VA. Hopefully, if we can find signatures on deeds and other court records in NC and VA, we may be able to determine if we are dealing with separate individuals, named George. Could George SUMPTER (married about 1760-65 to Elizabeth GROSS in North Carolina) be the 19 year old indentured George from St. Brides, Fleet St., London, England who married later in life? If not and he can be document as being in NC 1760-65, how does he tie into either of the families of Richard of Henrico or William of Hanover-Louisa? On 22 Feb 2000, Jim Young sent an email discussing the Lumpter and Lumter, Simpter and Simter spellings of the names Sumpter and Sumter. In checking my census file, I find that many of these men are truly Sumpter/Sumters. The first man listed was a Lumter, Jesse, Muhlenberg Co, KY 1830 Census. Also listed in Muhlenberg Co, KY, 1830 census are John Sumter age 60-70 and Thomas Sumter age 30-40. Are these men Father and Sons? Does anyone have knowledge of where they came from and who the parents of John would be? 1830 Lumpter, John, White Co, IL, is really Sumpter, John. 1840 Lumpter, Edward D, Jennings Co, IN, is really Sumpter, Edward D. 1830 Lumpter, Isom, Owen Co, IN, is really Sumpter, Isom. 1840 Lumpter. E, Monroe Co, MO, is really Sumpter, E. 1840 Lumpter, William, Monroe Co, MO, is really Sumpter, William. 1880 Lumpter, Louis, Nye Co, NV, was read by me as Sumpter, Louis. He gave his birthplace as Prussia and that his parents were born in Russia. Can anyone help clarify this? 1850 Lumpter, Richard, Lawrence Co, OH, is really Sumpter, Richard. 1830 Lumpter, Thomas, Lancaster Co, PA, was read by me as Sumpter, Thomas. 1850 Lumpter, William, Bedford Co, VA, is really Sumpter, William. 1850 Lumpter, Asa, Fayette Co, VA, is really Sumpter, Asa. 1840 Lumpter, Andrew M., Henry Co, VA, was read by me as Sumpter, Andrew. 1850 Lumpter, Ed.M., Louisa Co, VA, was read by me as Sumpter, Ed. M. Later census or other records show the above names to be Sumpter. Does anyone out there know who the others on this list are? Are they truly Sumpters? Any and all information will be greatly appreciated. Jane Sumpter Malone-George

Hi Everyone: The Ellen Payne Odom Genealogy Library publishes a small newspaper every two months and this is where the following came from...current edition Feb/March 2000, thought it would be of value to many of us... There are two more articles that I still need to copy that should be of value to all of us who are researching the US census. Take care... Bev Sumpter DAR Library is now online! The Daughters of the American Revolution is now online as near as your computer at www.dar.library.net This library is one of the nations premier genealogical research centers and was ranked the third most important of national institutions based on the uniqueness of sources in a listing by the publisher of Heritage Quest. In late 1998, the library's book collection numbered some 150,000 volumes. About 5,000 new titles enter this library each year. Many thousands of volumes of genealogical complications, record abstracts and other materials are available only at the DAR library. DAR members and the public have contributed to these sources, building a collection of great research depth covering all periods of American history. The DAR Library is one of several departments at DAR National Headquarters in downtown Washington, DC. Library of Congress Website Offers Much Information Through the Library of Congress' Local History and Genealogy Reading Room on the Internet you can access the holdings of the largest library in the world, which has a collection of over 250,000 local history and genealogy books available for researchers. There is also a large repository of microfilm holdings from the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. http://lcweb.loc.gov.rr.genalogy/ You may also access the National Union Catalog of Manuscripts Collection (NUCMC) at http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html which indexes millions of unpublished documents and contains much valuable genealogical information. Last but not least, from this same publication... National Archives Building in Washington to undergo renovations... The National Archives Building in Washington, DC will undergo a major renovation beginning in February 2000. A new genealogy and family history center and a significant improvement in the microfilm reading room, updated displays and exhibits of the the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights and millions of other historically valuable documents are some of the improvements planned. The research side of the building, located on Pennsylvania Ave between 7th & 9th Streets, NW will remain open for business throughout the renovations. The exhibition side on Constitution Avenue will close for renovation on July 5, 2001 and will not reopen until 2003.

Hi all -- I am looking for more on my Sumpter line from VA. I have an Agnes SUMPTER, born ca 1775 to George Sumpter and Elizabeth Gross (Sumpter). Agnes was married to Charles Greer of Henry and Franklin Counties, Virginia, in 1793. I believe George would have fought in the Revolutionary War?? If this line seems even a little bit familiar, PLEASE email me with ANYTHING!! I am stumped and would very much appreciate ANY leads. This line of Sumpters might have been in NC or PA as well. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!! Regards, and best of luck to all -- Tracy
In genealogies that I have seen the wife of Frank Sumpter is said to be Lucinda "Jane" Ship. There is a note that Jane may not have been Frank's wife. The great grandchildren of Frank Sumpter , my great aunts and uncles, have sworn and sworn again that the wife of Frank Sumpter, the only wife he ever had was a Trollinger. Apparently, they are correct; apparently she is Lucinda "Jane" Trollinger. Is there any reason to believe that Frank was married to a Ship other than Frank and Lucinda with children Samuel and Peter were listed in the hospitality of Yancey Ship in 1870 Reynolds County, Missouri census? Lt Art +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Exhibit II Hello Bryan, Yes, as far as I know those are all the cemeteries of Iron Co. they came from my book that I did years ago and I entered them on the Iron Co. list. I have gotten a few more from other people since I did the book, but there is not a Sumpter listed in them. There are three Sumpter families in the 1880 Iron Co. census book, I suppose you have seen all of those? Going thru the census books for Iron Co. there are several Sumpter families there in all of them. Ind the 1876 there are 4 Janes and no Lucinda. In the Iron County History book is this: page 400 the fifth child of Samuel Trolinger, Jane Trolinger who married Frank Sumpter. In the beginning it says: Samuel Trolinger, wife not known, died in 1865, either murdered as some family stories have it or, he was killed as a bushwacker as others would have you believe.. I can send you this article if you don't have it. It was submitted by Judy Faulkner Humphrey, HC86, Box 6547, Viburnnum, MO 65566. There are 11 entries re. Sumpter in this book. Have you seen it?? They lived so close to the Reynolds Co. line that what you are searching for could be in either county. Let me know, I have a lot of books here at home. The Trollinger Cem. is in Reynolds Co., due north of Gates, Mo. at the Iron Co. line. Hope some of this is of help.
