    3. Folks, Every week or so (or whenever the digest gets to about 20 KB), I'm forwarding to the List those posts that have been "gatewayed" from RootsWeb's SUFFOLK Board that might contain information of interest to List subscribers, and here's the current "digest" of such gatewayed posts. If you wish to respond to any of these gatewayed posts, please do so by clicking on the relevant "Message Board URL:" link and NOT by responding either to the list OR to my address as the digest poster. Board posters will not see your List response unless they are also subscribed to the List, and most are not. PLEASE also be careful about responding to any post and inadvertently re-posting the ENTIRE digest to the list! More information on RootsWeb's Boards can be found in the FAQs at: http://www.RootsWeb.ancestry.com/ , where you will also find a link to the Boards' "home page". If you have any questions about the Boards or what the following is, pls contact me off-list at: mailto:[email protected] . I have George's wife as Sophia Todman, not Reeves, but I may be incorrect in that. I haven't managed to find their marriage (Boss/Todman) record yet on any database. I also have the death certificate of Susannah (Oct 1st, 1869). If you want me to email you the scans of these certificates, let me know. -------------------------------------------------- Re: parish records lookups This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I am wondering if you can help me as I have hit a brick wall. I am looking for the parish baptism record of George Jolly. The information I have on him is as follows: He married Susan Fenn 17/10/1821 at St Mary's, Walpole, Suffolk. They had 5 children, William (Born 1822), George (Born 1826), Lucy (Born 1828), Susan (Born 1830),and Henry (Born 1831). Susan Jolly nee Fenn died and was buried at St Michael's, Cookley, Suffolk on 12/11/1832. Geroge re-married to Emma Nunn at St Mary's Church, Huntingfield, Suffolk. on the GRO marriage certificate it states his father was Charles Pipe. By pure luck I found that a Charles Pipe had 2 base born children by Amy Jolly in Brundish John (baptised 10/12/1797) and Harriot (baptised 1/2/1801), but can not find any record for a George Jolly in Brundish. Amy was buried on 23/4/1801 in Brundish. Have checked census's as well. 1841. Does not give place of birth, but says lived in Huntingfield. No record in Parish records. 1851. Says was born in Rendham, Suffolk. No details in Parish records. 1861. Says born in Brundish, Suffolk. No details in parish records. George died on 8/9/1864 in Huntingfield, Suffolk aged 66. This would put his birth year about 1798, But where? >From you records of Suffolk can you please help. -------------------------------------------------- George Jolly, Suffolk, England Born about 1798. Sarah died 1858 she is alone on the 1851 census and says she is a widow. I also have found a reference to the death of Isaac Sadler JOHNSON late of Mile End who died in Sept 6th 1837, Aged 58 and a reference to him born Feb 24th 1802 and his death on July 25th 1868. A reference to him is made in the Whytes Directory in 1863 and also he is found on the 1861 aged 69 with a wife Eliza. His father was William Johnson of Higham whose wife was called Rebekkha. Is anyone has any details regarding William and Rebekkha JOHNSONS children and can clear up Isaac Sadler JOHNSON and his family I would be very greatful. I have various references to his son Isaac Sadler Johnson and a wife Sarah but again lots of references to his death (but more than one). It maybe by that time they had moved into Essex. Author: Gobbitt Surnames: MOORE, STACEY Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8671.5/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone know why the Suffolk Yeomanry would need to take their horses as far as Tadworth? It's on the other side of London, beyond Croydon, between Epsom and Reigate. I'm sure they could have found plenty of pedestrians to harass in their own county. Estate agent Harrie STACEY, whose surname is visible in this picture, was listed at Station Approach, Tadworth, in Kelly's 1913 directory of Surrey (p. 284, under Kingswood). The back of the postcard states that Moore's Studio at 61 Denmark Hill, Camberwell, [London] S.E. had been established for 14 years. George S. MOORE, who was at that address by 1904 (Kelly's P.O. London County Suburbs Directory, part 1, p. 126), was described as a photographer in the 1901 census, working on his own account at home (living at 210 Southampton Street, Camberwell, with his parents, who were apparently not involved in his business). George was not among the photographers listed in Kelly's London Suburban Directory for 1901 but he may have had some kind of studio even before then. (His brother John, three years younger than him, was working as a butcher at the age of 16 in 1901.) That doesn't reveal much more than the photograph itself about the date, which must have been between c.1909 (when the khaki uniforms were issued) and September 1915 (when my great-grandfather and his comrades in the 1/1st Suffolk Yeomanry left their horses at home and embarked for Gallipoli from Liverpool). Three of the four riders in the third photograph have a new style of webbing bandolier, while one has an older type with a flap and three leather fasteners. The other side of each postcard is identical, with the words "For Inland Postage Only this Space may now be used for Communication" (rarely specified after 1905 and never before the divided back was authorized in 1902). Author: Gobbitt Surnames: GOBBITT Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8671.7/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Some of the NCOs in the first of these photographs can be seen in the 1913 portrait of C Squadron in my initial posting. I believe this one is a little earlier, perhaps taken at Grantchester Meadows, near Cambridge, in May 1911. The second photo shows men and horses being inspected, possibly at the same training camp. In the background on the left is the gable end of a building with white boards near the roof. This looks very similar to the buildings behind my great-grandfather, Corporal Henry Moyse GOBBITT, in the third photo (numbered 307 or 397), probably also at Grantchester in 1911. Author: Gobbitt Surnames: Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8671.8/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Here are some more unknown Suffolk Yeomanry men on horseback in khaki uniforms, between 1909 and 1914 or thereabouts. 1. The buildings in the first of these photographs are clearly among those visible beyond the tents in the photo of a religious service (probably at Ipswich in 1914) posted last year (28 Mar 2011 5:11PM GMT, second image). I don't know the exact location of the 1914 training camp. In 1910 the site was Bixley Heath, not far from St Clement's Hospital, in eastern Ipswich. 2. Possibly the same man again. I'm not so sure about the horse, nor the date and place. 3 (numbered 89). I understand that the badge on this young man's arm identifies him as a 1st Class Army Scout. 4 (numbered 110). Two privates, and unfortunately two black ink marks in the sky. 5 (faintly numbered 147?). No rifle, but an empty butt bucket on a rather distinctive horse. And a rider.
