Does anyone know what this means in 1901 census as opposed to "agricultural labourer" in other censuses? Denise
Hi Denise The occupational classifications used in 1881 were largely the same with a few minor alterations in 1891 but in 1901 they tried to have clearer definitions , one main reason was to show the decline in agricultural labour and the move to cities and factory work The problem as always was the interpretation the enumerator put on it or the way the householder described it But there is no real difference between the two terms except to say he definitely worked on the land In 1901 there should also be enumerated if he was an employer or worker (most likely the latter) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 01/08/2012 07:57, G May wrote: > Does anyone know what this means in 1901 census as opposed to "agricultural > labourer" in other censuses? > Denise
