    3. Good morning I have a family of Harringtons who migrated to Lancashire (not as drastic as Australia) in the late 19th C, 1871-72. The youngsters found work in the Iron and Textile industries. I have heard that travel from Suffolk to Lancashire by canal boat was offered as an inducement. Does anyone know how such families were recruited? Did local newspapers carry advertisements? They would only take family members of working age, so anyone under the age of 12 was left behind with other family/friends. Once the families were established, or as the children attained the age of 12, they joined their parents. This scheme only ran for a couple of years although some records are still available at the SRO. 3. Thank you Patricia. Since the eldest child was only 10 in 1871and the family had relocated by 1872, all four children would have to have been left behind. There is no way of knowing what happened. I feel another visit to Bury Archives coming on! Glenys (Travis) -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter.
