By the time of the hearth taxes between about 1664 and 1674, the name Farrow, Farrowe, Farrow, Farro, Faro, Farrar, Farrer, Ferrer, Phare, Pharo, Pharow, Pharrow, Pharrowe and probably a few other spellings, were all used relatively interchangeably. Given that dictionaries had not been invented at the date, and didn't become reasonably distributed until about 1900, all spellings at this date should be regarded as phonetic and in the local accent. With the result that when someone came from out of the county, they didn't always understand the accent, which would introduce further errors. Examples of these are a spelling of Faragon, Forrow, Fullow and Paroe, or else the constable couldn't read his own writing when making a transcription. And then there are also abbreviations, of which I have picked up two in the hearth tax of Ferr and Frow. Probably when the constable was doing his rounds he wrote down Ferr' or F'row, and forgot to expand it when he wrote down his final list. I could spot few Oxfords in the list, and none that I thought were Farrows. One of the Oxfords, is probably a misrecorded Orford or vice versa. I have put below my sign off the various entries I can spot for Farrow in its various spellings in the Hearth taxes. If you want the full details of the individual entries, how many hearths they paid tax on, which villages they were in, and sometimes their trades or other information then follow the following link http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/suffolk/2007-08/1186937880 and then email me off list.
