    1. [SFK-UK] civil marriage

    3. Does anyone know when civil ceremony for marriage started? I have checked the usual churches used by this family and have come up with nothing. The marriage took place in 1898. I have found the marriage in BMDs but cannot locate it in church records. Knowing a date when churches were no longer the only place to be married would probably help determine the course of my investigations. Denise, Australia

    3. Denise Civil ceremonies were possible from 1837 so it is possible that the marriage you are seeking was not in a church. However there are usually numerous religious establishments where the marriage could have taken place within the Registration District, and some records may still be held by the relative church. The quicker way to establish the place of marriage is to apply for a copy of the marriage certificate, although I appreciate that this will incur a cost which you may not be willing to pay. If you post the names of the parties involved then someone may have already found the answer! Brian Does anyone know when civil ceremony for marriage started? 3. Thanks to all who answered my query. I thought 1837 would be the date. Since I put in my question to you all, I have been given a clue which I will follow up before I bother anyone further. Isn't that always the way - you ask and search then as soon as you ask outside the family for help, someone will offer some previously unforthcoming assistance. I will order the certificate if I run out of other options. Thanks again to the ever helpful members of this list. 3. Hi Denise For the context of your enquiry it would be from the 1836 marriage Act but from the start of Civil Registration in mid 1837 I know its stating the obvious but if you obtain the certificate it would tell you where they married Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 08/09/2012 03:19, G May wrote: > Does anyone know when civil ceremony for marriage started?
