Author: Gobbitt Surnames: ROWE Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: Hi Dawn County directories list the mistress at the National School in Wingfield (with an average attendance of 60 children in 1888 and 70 in 1900) as Miss Annie Rowe. She was named Anna Rowe when her death at the age of 41 was announced in the Ipswich Journal on 17 Nov. 1900. More details were published by the same newspaper a few weeks later (15 Dec.): WINGFIELD. The Parish School has sustained a severe loss by the death of Miss Anna Rowe, who for nearly fifteen years held the post of headmistress, and by the faithful and efficient discharge of her duties, as well as by her exemplary life, won the highest regard of the managers and of all who knew her. Her Majesty's Inspector, in his report, remarks:--"On the eve of writing a pleasant report to record creditable progress here, I was deeply pained to receive the sad news of the death of the mistress. The recollection of her self-denying and conscientious efforts to discharge her duties to the best of her abilty will long continue to operate as an incentive and example to all concerned in the best interests of these children." Wingfield School's archives at the Suffolk Record Office in Ipswich are catalogued online (https://www.suffolkarchives.co.uk/). I don't see a log book (which would have been written by the headmistress as a diary of her professional life) but there are school committee minutes 1878-1902 (FC84/M/1/3) and some annual reports of the School Inspector and other documents dated 1897-1901 (FC84/M/1/7).
