    3. I have come across a cryptic note which I think refers to the East Anglian Magazine of January 1971. Does anyone have a copy of this magazine to confirm whether there is an article which refers to a Thomas (Dobbler) Packard of Yoxford Road Kelsale in it? The rather cryptic notes I have which were prepared sometime prior to 1990 are: "Thomas Packard 1828-1914 Builder and Bricklayer of Yoxford road, Kelsale. Known as Dobbler Packard. EAM Jan 1971 Allan Jobson" Wishing you every success in your researches Giles Colchester, Researching COLCHESTER family, any spelling, any time, any place And PACKARD in England, Australasia and Africa

    3. Giles, A pre-owned copy of the East Anglian Magazine, issue of January 1971, is currently available for sale (£3-85p including postage) on eBay.  Many other issues, from 1940 to 1970s are also available. 3. Hello Giles The reference in the East Anglian Magazine is very brief: "Thomas Packard was the bricklayer, otherwise known as Dobbler Packard". This is towards the end of the second and final page (115) of an article entitled "A Kelsale Yesterday" by Allan Jobson (1889-1980) which I found yesterday in volume 30 at the SRO in Ipswich (on shelf GD4 of the rolling stacks in the microform searchroom). Much of page 114 is devoted to a photograph of two girls standing in the village, whose image seems to have provided inspiration for the article. I saw no dates but the names and occupations of several other local tradespeople mentioned by Jobson may have been taken from a county directory of the 1880s rather than from his own memories. Another potential source is his mother, Eliza née BARHAM, who was born in nearby Middleton, where I understand young Allan was a frequent visitor from their home in London, long before he lived in Westleton and Felixstowe (Tony Copsey, 2002: "Suffolk Writers who were born between 1800-1900", p. 204). I haven't looked for Kelsale tales in one of Jobson's early books, "Suffolk Yesterdays" (1944/1968). 3. Thank you so much for this. Yes it is a very brief reference, but it is the only one I have to him being called Dobbler. Presumably he dobbed the mortar between the bricks. I had no idea that Dobson had written other books, clearly I will have to track down a copy. So thank you for having a look for me.
