Hi, I've just been looking at the electoral registers on FMP for my 2nd great grandfather William Baxter. Just to set things up for you all. In the 1881 census he was listed in Sotherton. In the 1891 census he is listed in Wetheringsett cum Brockford. In 1901 census he is in Creeting St. Peter. Now I've been looking in the 1892, 1893 & 1894 electoral registers, but the only entry I can find for him is listed at the same address he was at in 1881 in Sotherton. Were voters required to change addresses with the government for voting requirements when they moved back then, does anyone know? Also how common would this be? Would he have had to return to Sotherton to vote? When creating an event for these, what would be the best way to indicate the discrepancy regarding the census addresses versus electoral registers? Any ideas would be great. Thanks. Paula Hadgraft Melbourne, Australia
Hi Paula If you want to find out all about the Electoral Registers there is a very detailed description provided by the British Library at https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.bl.uk_britishlibrary_-7E_media_subjects-2520images_government-2520publ&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=_jOIZWAdXk-WDBHAxNnHjDrx7FosjGQwOhDmHxWhDDU&m=LLJxgNl50ITxeMPZjt_x6gElvu2Hxdh5VUC4MQXHzMA&s=jk7GmAggXZJhegHbaJnfe8BI54k-CmBxDrTaz1LCyQc&e= ications/pdfs/parliamentaryconstituencies.pdf The voting rights did not depend just upon place of residence but also ownership of property. In the entries that you have found there will be a Letter Code against the name detailing how the person was entitled to a vote - these codes are detailed at https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.electoralregisters.org.uk_codes.htm&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=_jOIZWAdXk-WDBHAxNnHjDrx7FosjGQwOhDmHxWhDDU&m=LLJxgNl50ITxeMPZjt_x6gElvu2Hxdh5VUC4MQXHzMA&s=zARwZ76S4ZGZ77kWZMaZPSFgX3gJeD26Ko953UXj5v8&e= with a much shorter description of the Electoral Registers. Hopefully this may help to answer your query.
