this may be a niave comment, and may have nothing to do with the Backhouse family, but my husband descends from both Theodorus Craco Bukias of Cleve and Apenheim, Germany, his grandson imigrated to U.S. bef. 1745, and William Barkhurst, of somewhere in England, immigrated to U.S. bef 1793. either name could be a variation of/from Backhouse. William BACKHOUSE was christened in Benhall in 1817, I believe, and is found in the censuses for Little Wild St., St Giles, London in 1851-1871 (confirming the place of birth and with age fitting). I am yet to find him in 1841 but he married in Lambeth in 1840 to Eliza DANIELL, so would have been resident in or around, I am pretty sure. There are a number of people on Ancestry interested in this name with whom I have been in touch - and who seem to have information from the IGI or similar sources going back to a 1714 christening of Robert BACKHOUSE in Yoxford. I would be grateful to hear from anybody interested in the name or who might be able to help, with whom I can put my friend in touch.
