    3. Folks, Every week or so (or whenever the digest gets to about 20 KB), I'm forwarding to the List those posts that have been "gatewayed" from RootsWeb's SUFFOLK Board that might contain information of interest to List subscribers, and here's the current "digest" of such gatewayed posts. If you wish to respond to any of these gatewayed posts, please do so by clicking on the relevant "Message Board URL:" link and NOT by responding either to the list OR to my address as the digest poster. Board posters will not see your List response unless they are also subscribed to the List, and most are not. PLEASE also be careful about responding to any post and inadvertently re-posting the ENTIRE digest to the list! I am more of a photographer myself but I wish I could draw. I can't help you any further with those you've trancribed yet, but I did come across a Marjoram gravestone in Hempnall yesterday while looking for another part of my tree - not far away from any of the places you've been. It was for a James Marjoram and his wife Sarah Ann - James died in 1892. While I don't have Marjorams in Pulham I have Walnes (my own surname) and Stanleys and links to a few other names, so it could just be a matter of time before I unearth a second line. Happy to do additional look ups in the NRO for you as I feel sure there is a link to my line somewhere. -------------------------------------------------- Edward and William Brackett 1522 militray survey Baberg hundred-Sudbury This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. My ancester Richard Brackett came to New England by 1630. Richard was the son of Peter and Rachel Brackett of Sudbury. Peter Brackett died in 1616 in Sudbury and Rachel remarried to Martin Saunders. Richard, his brother Peter, their sister Rachel (Brackett) Newcomb; wife of Francis Newcomb, their remarried mother and her second husband were all in the Boston/Braintree area of Massachusetts by 1640. I am interested in contacting anyone working on these families in Sudbury or elsewhere. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Goodchild FamilySuffolk UK. James was christened 17 July 1849 Suffolk County Bts. Mary his mother was single, she married Henry John King 20 Jun 1858. My question now is did Henry John adopt James as he uses "Sagon-King" on occassion & that surname has been brought down 2 my generation. Any help would be appreciated. Mary's was daughter of William Sagon & Mary Gardener, Henry John was the son of Robert King. -------------------------------------------------- Re: ADOPTIONS This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Robesure Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8595.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: It depends what you mean by 'adoption'. Until 1927 there were no formal adoptions in England, but prior to that there are many instances of informal arrangments. It was quite normal for children of Widows who married again to be called by the surname of a second husband, so I cannot see any problem in the illegitimate child of a single woman being called by the surname of a later husband. There will not however be any formal procedure. In this case it seems that James wished to preserve his roots and retained both names. Often in such cases one of these names are just passed on as a second given name but in this case has been preserved as a surname. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Sir Mackenzie Bowell / John Bowell This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I just found my ancestor's military record. Name was John Baldwin (born 1806-died 1871) at Bures Suffolk. He enlisted in the 49th Regitment at Colchester on the 15th November 1825 and served for 20 years, with 11 years being in the East Indies. I've seen on WDYTYA, some people searching for BDM records in East Indies. Where are they? Can't seem to find them on Ancestry at the moment. Are they on Ancestry or somewhere else? Author: Robesure Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8600.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: What are you looking for in the overseas BMDs? John was born and died in Bures, it is possible that he was married abroad and I have looked through the overseas marriages and there is nothing showing for a John Baldwin during his lifetime. I expect however that he married before central registration began in 1837 and as his wife Sarah was born in Boxford Suffolk, then I suggest that you start your search in the parish registers their. In 1851 they had a daughters Mary Ann b.c.1836 born in what appears to be Halstead, Suffolk (possibly Halstead Essex) and Sarah c1844, Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk. All these places are local to Bures, so it would seem that they did not travel far during this period. I cannot though see the family in Suffolk in 1841. I am not aware of any passenger lists available, but would think that military records are your best chance. I think however that his service was when he was young and he returned to Suffolk, married and settled afterwards. There is a chance that he had more than one marriage and had children born abroad, but without evidence it is difficult to undertake a search. ------------------------------------------------- Re: John Baldwin - Chelsea Pensioner - Servered East Indies This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: baker18651 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8600.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for the reply. I also could not see the family in 1841 but they are in the 1851 and 61 (though Sarah was deceased by 1861). John is living with Maryann and her husband James Rice in 1871. What I wanted to see if it was possible that he did marry overseas. I do think the marriage that occured in 1826 to Sarah Reason in Suffolk is the more likely one but I just wanted to see if there were any other marriages to see if there was a possibility that the Sarah Reason marriage was not the correct one. His service records say that he spent 11 years 11 months in East Indies and 1 year 11 months in NSW & VDL (Australia). That totals almsot 14 years. He enlisted in 1825 and discharged in 1846.I was thinking maybe the 14 years was one long stretch of services overseas starting in 1825 and ending in 1840, but as Maryannn is born in 1836, then, the overseas service was more likely split. My guess is that if the family were not in the 1841 census then they were OS then. Just now need to see if there are any records to show him leaving the UK for the Indies & AUS, to get a time line. The service record only shows the total amount of service overseas. Thanks & Regards ------------------------------------------------- Re: Arthur Ward/Harriett Gates This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Robesure Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8600.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I assume that you obtained the Sarah Reason marriage via the IGI. This does seem feasable as it took place in Newton, about half way between Boxford and Bures. The only way to confirm if it is the correct couple would be to check the origional entry and see what it gives for the Groom's occupation and also possibly see if you can make a connection between the witnesses and your family. It also would still make sense to go through the Parish Registers of Boxford and Bures and maybe other local parishes to see if there are other possibilities. If John only signed up in 1825 and they married in 1826 then either Sarah must have travelled with him or they spent a lot of time apart. That might account for gap between the birth of Mary Ann and Susan. Incidentally the IGI gives a baptism 28 Jan.1828 in Bures of a John Baldwin, the son of John and Sarah. He could very well be another child and would tie in with an 1826 marriage. I cannot see this John in any census. There were also a John & Sarah Baldwin in the village of Wilby (in the north of Suffolk) with a family (including a John b.c.1828) at the same time. I doubt if the Newton marriage would relate to them. If there were children born abroad it would seem that none survived. If John had met a girl and married abroad it would be a great coincidence that she happenned to be a local Suffolk girl and it is very unlikely in those days that a single girl would travel abroad with a boyfriend and then marry whilst away. They would marry before departure ------------------------------------------------- Re: Pain family of England This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
