    3. Hello Margaret, Rosemary and Suffolk Listers, I too have an interest in the Jessup family of the Norfolk/Suffolk border area.  I am descended from the QUINTON/QUINTIN family who lived in the parishes surrounding Diss and Eye in the 1500/1600s, and I am aware of the following three QUINTIN/JESSOP marriages: ELIZABETH QUINTIN m. JOHN JESSOP at Diss on 19 July 1607 THOMAS QUINTIN of Eye m. ABIGAIL JESSOP of Occold about 1619 (they had five children between 1620 and 1627)  FRANCES QUINTIN of Scole m. NICHOLAS JESSOP at Scole on 2 July 1633 I suspect (but cannot conclusively prove) that my QUINTON line descends through THOMAS and ABIGAIL.  Unfortunately many early parish records simply have not survived, and those that have are often far from complete.  For instance at Stuston there are no records whatsoever for 28 of the years between 1559 and 1630.  Similarly, there are gaps in the surviving records for various other North Suffolk parishes, especially Occold.  Again at Stuston there is an entry in the Bishops’ transcripts for 1605 which stated that ‘many dyed of the small pockes’; the strange thing is that the actual burial register recorded only 3 deaths in 1605 and 4 in 1606!  Another factor is that in general in early parish records there is a lack of vital information.  Often baptism records gave only the name of the father, while burial records seldom provided details of age at death or the status of the deceased (widow, wife, spinster, husband, etc).    Fortunately, some of these QUINTONS left wills, as did ABIGAIL's father, ADAM JESOPE, who bequeathed a house and land at Occold to his son-in-law THOMAS QUINTIN, and it appears that this same property remained in the QUINTON family for at least another 140 years.  It is thus through land ownership, rather than parish records, that I have (tentatively) traced back my 17th/18th century ancestry.   I hope that this mail is sufficiently provocative to warrant a response from listers!   John Quinton Flint Peru, South America   ________________________________ From: margaret jessup <maggie2lo@tiscali.co.uk> To: SUFFOLK@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, August 23, 2010 8:28:37 AM Subject: [SFK-UK] Name interest I am new to this list so I just thought that I would post my name interest in Suffolk. 3. Margaret, On my mothers side are a Jessop family. WILLIAM JESSOP who married ELIZABETH NUNN at St. Mary's Church, Huntingfield, near Halesworth on 14th February 1777. Between 1778 and 1805 they had fourteen children. The interest from my mothers side is in 4th son James bap 14th Nov 1784 later to marry Mary French. Have much detail about James, he joined the army, was caught with others stealing whilst stationed at Woodbridge, was sentenced to death, but then because of his good army record was sent to Van Dieman Land (Tasmania) aboard the convict ship 'Indefatigable' which left England on 9th May 1812 arriving Hobart 19th Oct 1812. His wife here died soon after his sailing. He never returned to this country, he married a convict girl and had four daughters, am in touch with descendents. His life in Tasmania was a rocky one but he did live to a good age. Can send all details if required, but it would have to be by post, to large to e-mail Success with your research Regards Alec Burwood ----- Original Message ----- From: "margaret jessup" <maggie2lo@tiscali.co.uk> To: <SUFFOLK@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 23, 2010 2:28 PM Subject: [SFK-UK] Name interest >I am new to this list so I just thought that I would post my name interest >in Suffolk. > JESSUP/JESSOP. especially from the Thetford border area. > Margaret Jessup > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > SUFFOLK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    2. I am researching a family tree where James JESSOP marries an Elizabeth LEE (her family is my interest!). She was the daughter of a soldier (initially NSW Corps) and Catherine RILEY (whose mother was transported to Australia in the Second Fleet). Elizabeth was born in Sydney NSW on 10 Mar 1802. She married James on 20 Jan 1819 in Launceston, TAS. I would interested in the information you say you have on James. DM me me(overswavesey+rootsweb@gmail.com)?
