In the 1871 census (RG10/1754/96) there is a family living at 29 Duke Street Ipswich as follows: Harry RAMPLIN Head Age 21 born Hadleigh,Suffolk Labourer Hannah RAMPLIN Wife Age 23 born Ipswich Florence RAMPLIN Daughter Age 3 born Ipswich Robert RAMPLIN Son Age 1 born Ipswich Apart from the surname all the other details fit which makes me believe that there has been a name change. Just to add to the mystery there is no record of the births of Florence and Robert RAMPLIN but FreeBMD does give births for Florence and Robert GRANGER in 1867 and 1869 respectively. >From Free BMD there is a marriage in the Ipswich Registration District of Henry RAMPLIN in the September quarter of 1867 which would tie in and there is a candidate wife called Hannah BROWN. The GRANGER family are still in Kemball Street in 1891. The big question is why did they change their name - assuming that they are one and the same. Maybe one of the people on the list can make a suggestion for you to follow up. Brian
That is very interesting as I have a whole slew of Ramplin's and their relations in my tree already but not this family. I can't figure out if the two children were listed as Ramplin on the Census then how do the births show up as Granger in the BMD? This is a puzzle but you have started me on the quest. Hopefully I can figure it out. Thanks so much for your help. I may need more help to figure this out though. Bye for now.
