Good morning everyone, in the 10 years i have been researching my STEPHENSON/STEVENSON line from Suffolk i have never found my g.g.grandmother in the 1861 census. Could i please ask if someone with Ancestry would do a search for Hannah Choat/Choatt/Choate/Chuett in Barking, Suffolk. Hannah was b: 1838 at Barking and i wonder if she was there just before her marriage April 25, 1861 in Merton, Surrey. Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou Bob

Bob I take it that you have found Hannah Choat in Chatham in the 1861 census but she gives her place of birth as Gillingham. I see that in the 1851 the Hannah Choat in Barking is listed as being born in Willisham. I just wonder if the enumerator misread his own writing and substituted Willisham with Gillingham which was more local to him. Both places have the double L and end with ham so I suppose it is possible. The enumerators books were usually written up after the census information had been collected. The Hannah Choat of Kent does not appear in the 1851 census which could be further evidence of the theory. Is there anything that would connect your Hannah with Chatham (someone naval in the family?) or Kent. Brian
