Hello Folks, I am hoping someone can look at 2 of the 1881 Census pages RG11/1850F101p11 & p12 and give me their opinion of the family relationships shown. The husband bn 1851 and wife bn 1852 are shown on page 11 as living at Gipping Rd, Old Newton, and two of their children Alice & Rosa on page 12 without an address. They are followed by Mary Ann Snelling, listed as mother , Lodger, Unm, with an address of High Rd. I believe these are all legitimate facts except the address change puzzles me as does the mother/unm situation. Do you agree these are just enumerator errors Other data I have collected seem to agree with my assumptions regarding ths Census input Phil White in New Hampshire USA
Hi Phil (a name for your people would have helped you know <g>) Re your pages If you check the schedule numbers for the family they are in the same address, my suggestion is the \\ is in the wrong place which the enumerator has attempted to correct with an \ followed by // George, Eliza, Alice & Rosa on schedule 70, Mary Ann SNELLING mother on schedule 71 That could be Mary Ann had a separate room within their house and had a separate schedule or just filled in a separate schedule thinking she/he should There are no addresses given except the road, just schedule numbers I assume the wife of George, Eliza is the Ann Eliza with Mary Ann SNELLING in previous census ? I haven't found a marriage to prove the theory, have you ? The relationship should be mother in law if so but as in many cases the people filling in the schedules wrongly interpreted the rules, which together with other errors from the enumerator trying to transcribe their details often leads to multiple errors creeping in Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hello Folks, I am hoping someone can look at 2 of the 1881 Census pages > RG11/1850F101p11 & p12 > and give me their opinion of the family relationships shown. > The husband bn 1851 and wife bn 1852 are shown on page 11 as living > at Gipping Rd, Old Newton, and > two of their children Alice & Rosa on page 12 without an address. > They are followed by Mary Ann Snelling, > listed as mother , Lodger, Unm, with an address of High Rd. I have sent a copy off list which should resolve the query. Brian
Hi Phil, Looking back at the 1871 census might be helpful here Green, Mendlesham Jacob Snelling Head wid 69 Ag Lab Mendlesham Mary Ann Snelling Daughter unm 47 Housekeeper Mendlesham Ann Eliza Snelling Granddaughter unm 19 Mendlesham Annie Eliza Snelling married George Osborne in 1872 I would suggest that Eliza Osborne was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ann Snelling. Mary Ann Snelling did not marry so the 'Unm' is correct. I suspect that Eliza and Mary Ann Snelling are living in separate homes on the corner of Gipping Road and High Road. As for the mother part, it all depends on what the enumerator was told and by whom, for example he could have been told Mary Ann was the mother of the lady next door whose lodging here. Hope this helps Anitra Phil White wrote: > Hello Folks, I am hoping someone can look at 2 of the 1881 Census pages > RG11/1850F101p11 & p12 > and give me their opinion of the family relationships shown.
