    3. Folks, Every week or so (or whenever the digest gets to about 20 KB), I'm forwarding to the List those posts that have been "gatewayed" from RootsWeb's SUFFOLK Board that might contain information of interest to List subscribers, and here's the current "digest" of such gatewayed posts. If you wish to respond to any of these gatewayed posts, please do so by clicking on the relevant "Message Board URL:" link and NOT by responding either to the list OR to my address as the digest poster. Board posters will not see your List response unless they are also subscribed to the List, and most are not. PLEASE also be careful about responding to any post and inadvertently re-posting the ENTIRE digest to the list! More information on RootsWeb's Boards can be found at: http://boards.RootsWeb.com/boardfaq.aspx#undefined , and the Board "home page" is at: http://boards.rootsweb.com/?o_iid=33216&o_lid=33216 . If you have any questions about the Boards or what the following is, pls contact me off-list at: mailto:SUFFOLK-admin@rootsweb.com . Father's occupation is listed on the census as a labourer. Does anyone know if British labourers would have been working in France at that time? Was there something historical happening? I have researched that period but can't find any wars involving France and England. Just curious but I'm stumped. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Ephraim Harvey This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Robesure Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8611.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There is no obvious registration of his birth showing in the Hoxne district which includes Wilby. As he is shown as 1 year old in 1841, census date 6 June and 11 years old on 30 March 1851, if correct would give a birth date between 7 June 1839 and 30 March 1840. It seems doubtful that he would be registered in his mothers maiden name as he had elder siblings using the Harvey name, although there were no Ephraims or similar registered in that period in Hoxne. The only Harvey birth in that period was a Charles in the September 1839 quarter, this could be him under a different given name or perhaps he was not registered at all. I see that what is probably his marriage, was to Elizabeth Read in Shoreditch Sep.1859, Volume 1c, Page 536. If you purchase a copy of that certificate it should give you his father's name and occupation which may assist identifying him, even if its only his death, as the children appear to be orphans. Returning to the 1841 census I see that he had probably a sister Harriot 3 with him. If you could trace her birth certificate this would give full details of parents. There was a Harriot Harvey registered in March 1839, 13, 407. This seems a little close to Ephraim's expected birth but could be her. It might be worth while obtaining a copy to see if her father matched Ephraim's marriage certificate. One other chance is to arrange to view the Wilby Parish Register to see if he or any of his siblings were baptised. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Ephraim Harvey This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I have been trying to find the birth of Susan/Susannah SKILTON from census records she was born abt 1798 Clare, Suffolk. I am only assuming that this is her maiden name, it could well be a first married name as when she married my gt.gt.gt.grandfather she was abt 35yrs old. I do not have any information about her parents etc. I do have info on her marriage. Many thanks in advance. I do know that Charles was his brother as his son Alfred married Ephraim`s daughter Alice Julia and have been told that Charles marriage cert has his father being a baker and still alive, Ephraim`s marriage cert says father deceased and the same details. The only possible James I found in 1941 was in hospital. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Ephraim Harvey This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Robesure Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8611.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Unfortunately his brother Charles was not the one registered in 1839, being older he was born before national registration began. Only Ephraim and Harriot were born after this began in 1837. If you cannot find either of these you are left with Parish Records. Despite his poor beginnings Ephraim seem to have done reasonably well in life, despite swopping from being a Baker to a Builder halfway through. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Ephraim Harvey This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. He bought land from Lord Armstrongs estate and built a great house. His will is a fasinating read. Alfred is nephew married his daughter and was employed by Ephraim as his rent collector. Harriot it seems never married and Ephraim look after her finacialy. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Joseph Willoughby - Ewarton, Suffolk This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I did however find Clare's own website www.clare-uk.com which seems to have an active genealogy section, it may be worth contacting them. I visited there last year. My Filby/Philby family also originally comes from Cotton. My GGGGrandfather was born there in 1822, his father was also born there and married at St. Andrew's and the generation before were also married at St. Andrew's. Should you ever come across the Filby name in your family, I would be ever so greatful to hear of it. Should anyone have a connection to the Filby's I would love to hear of it. My GGG Grandfather George Filby was baptised at St. Andrew's in 1822 as was his brother Barton, both born to Samuel Filby and Mary Anne Friend who were married 1819 in Ipswich. Samuel was baptised St. Andrew's 1798, son of Samuel and Bridget Barton who were married at St. Andrew's. This couple had 3 infants that did not survive and are buried at St. Andrew's. And two more children I can not trace, David J. and George b. 1800 -------------------------------------------------- Re: TATUM, 1907, England - FILBY This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I see you have Filby listed in your surnames and wonder if we have a connection? I can trace back to Samuel Filby and Bridget Barton married at St. Andrew's, Cotton, Aug 1791. They had several children baptised at St. Andrew's including my gggg-grandfather Samuel Filby married Mary Anne Friend who continued to lived in Cotton and raise their family including my ggg-grandfather George Filby, that moved to the Ashton-Under-Lyne area abt 1840 to mine coal. He married there at St. Mary's Church, Oldham, Lancashire. His family emmigrated to the U.S. in 1863, where I have traced his entire family. George had at least two siblings I haven't had much luck in tracing, Maria b. 1833 and Richard b. 1835, and two uncles George b. 1800 and David J. b. btw 1790-1800. Any connection? -------------------------------------------------- Re: parish records lookups This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Is it possible for you to access information on Emma/Amy Gough. She was born in Bury St. Edmunds around 1810. I have all her details after her marriage in 1830 to William Firman in Lackford, but would really like information that would lead me to the names of her parents. -------------------------------------------------- Re: parish records lookups This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I've tried looking on some other sites for the records but the best I can find is that she was christened at BSE in 1809 (from the IGI) but no more data than that. The Suffolk REgister Office did a 5 minute check for me for a birth for 1809 but couldn't find anything. The 1809 was taken from the census return for 1841 so she could have been born a year or two either side. Do you know if I would find anything more by going to the Latter Day Saints Office here in New Zealand to see if they had other films, or is the one you have got access to the only one -------------------------------------------------- Parish Lookups Bury St. Edmunds - St. Marys This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
