    3. Hi everyone, I am a first time subscriber and was wondering if any one can help me out with a problem please. I am trying to sort out two marriages. Both to people named Mary FISK. Now one married 1854 in Dennington and the other 1853 in Horham. MY problem is trying to sort out hopefully without having to purchase a certificate who the parents were of these two girls. They are cousins both born within a few months of one another. Now there is no film available for these dates of marriages available to me through the LDS. Has any one please got any suggestions how I can locate these two marriages to discover at least the fathers name of at least one of them. Thanks Rhonda ( Australia )

There really is no substitute for buying the marriage certs, then checking against PRs for their baptism details. However.... Look for them in census returns prior to their respective marriages. The 1851 and 1841 census returns are available online to search. The 1851 gives familial relationships so you'll be able to identify parents, if the two are at the home of their parents. The 1841 doesn't state family relationships, but reasonable assumptions can be made. If you're lucky, you might be able to find them in a FreeREG transcription. As ever, of course, treat this as a finding aid, and check against original sources, as far as possible. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent"

Rhonda As Pat has already mentioned, the Dennington area is full of Fisks! I have had a look at the 1851 census for Dennington and there are two possibilities - one Maria and the other Mary Ann - so using that route we would be using guesswork. I have not found any candidates for Horham. Looking at Free BMD there were 2 marriages recorded in the Hoxne District for Mary Ann Fisk but no marriages in that area for 1854, so are your dates correct? You say that they were married in Dennington and Horham but you have not said where this information came from - if it was the parish registers, or a transcript of them, it should show the father's name which may make the search easier. You may be in luck with Dennington as it is listed in the Parish Lookups on the Suffolk Surnames List. The site has not been updated for over 2 years, since the death of Ray Long, and is currently being temporarily hosted, so the email address may not be valid but have a look at http://www.terryaspinall.com/suffolk-surname-list/index.html and click on Parish Records Lookup to navigate your way to Dennington. Good luck with your search. Brian

    3. The only marriage in the Dennington Parish Church is 14 December 1853 Mary Ann FISK who married George MEADOWS her father was Reuben FISK labourer. I have the registers for Dennington on fiche. Of course there is no guarantee that they married in the Church of England - another church or registry Office is a possibility.
