Hi James I conducted a similar search for a missing family portrait several years ago and tracked it down in the following way. I found that the National Portrait Gallery in London keeps an index of portraits that are held by private owners/museums in the UK outside its own collection. They also may have photos of them. You could try contacting the National Gallery Archive team here: archive@npg.org.uk Good luck!
