Folks, Every week or so (or whenever the digest gets to about 20 KB), I'm forwarding to the List those posts that have been "gatewayed" from RootsWeb's SUFFOLK Board that might contain information of interest to List subscribers, and here's the current "digest" of such gatewayed posts. If you wish to respond to any of these gatewayed posts, please do so by clicking on the relevant "Message Board URL:" link and NOT by responding either to the list OR to my address as the digest poster. Board posters will not see your List response unless they are also subscribed to the List, and most are not. PLEASE also be careful about responding to any post and inadvertently re-posting the ENTIRE digest to the list! More information on RootsWeb's Boards can be found at: http://boards.ancestry.com/--------------------------------------------------?hex=faq&r=rw <http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=faq&r=rw>;; and the Board "home page" is at: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=main&r=rw <http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=main&r=rw>;; If you have any questions about the Boards or what the following is, pls contact me off-list at: SUFFOLK-admin@rootsweb.com <mailto: SUFFOLK-admin@rootsweb.com> Thanks, Peter SUFFOLK List Admin. -------------------------------------------------- Re: oslers This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. According to his marriage cert. in 1844 when he married Maria Wade of Debenham, James' father was listed ass John Church. I have not been able to locate a John Church that ties into James birth in 1821. Has anyone run across a John Chirch that perhaps could be James' father. James and Maria emigrated to Canada in 1856 and John was not with them, so I assume that he was still in Suffolk. -------------------------------------------------- Re: watling marriage help please. I am descended from Lucy Marjoram [my great grandmother] daughter of Robert Marjoram and Harriett Winkup and am in contact with a couple of her "marjoram Nieces" who are in their 90s now. by co incidence you mention Sarah Watling and the name sounded familiar so I looked it up in my tree however not through the Marjorams. I have a Sarah Watling born 1766 married to George Button who were the great grandparents of Lucys husband James Does anyone have any more info on Harriet Winkup's ancestry - have photos and a lot of articles on her 100th birthday but no details of her parentage, Christening etc. My whole tree is available publicly on Ancestry so feel free to investigate. I haven't heard of the Scandinavian link before. I do feel that the name probably did come from overseas. When you look at how the names are clustered around the sea ports of Ipswich and Gt Yarmouth and how few there are as you go back it certainly points to this. I thought originally they may have come over from the low countries in the C14th or in the 1660's but I can't find any similar names in those countries. Interestingly I came across the Italian surname Maiorano today - it's the closest foreign name I've found so far. The line I'm following has my GG Grandfather.. John Marjoram b. South Walsham 1856 (Married to Sarah Shove b. Coulsdon 1856) son of... John Marjoram b. Burlingham 1819 (Married Ann Hilton b. South Walsham 1827) and I think he's the son of... Joseph Marjoram b. Pulham 1781 (Married Mary (Loveday?) b. Blofield 1780) This is as far as I've managed to get using census returns on line. I'm going to Norfolk later this week and was hoping to spend a day in the records office trying to go back a little further. Can anyone recommend what I should be looking for? I have a feeling that the records my be incomplete. I'd appreciate any help. -------------------------------------------------- Re: MArgoram/ Marjoram This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. If and when you confirm the birth in Pulham (do you know if it's Pulham St Mary or Pulham Market? They are next door) of John you may be able to go back further. You can also check out the marriages and maybe look into the women's histories too. The NRO should have most of the records on film or fiche. If you've done lots of record searches before, you'll know to have a plan or you get sidetracked, and things like taking only a pencil and pad into the searchroom. I wouldn't be in the least surprised if this line links to mine, Pulham is only about 12 miles from Dennington, the stronghold of my Marjorams. -------------------------------------------------- "fair bridge over the river Waveney, between Norfolk and Suffolk" said to be built by John ROPER This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. He gave many benefactions to his parish church in London; built a fair bridge over the river Waveney, between Norfolk and Suffolk, with a firm causeway adjoining; and did many other works of charity. He died on April 7, 1524, leaving issue by Jane his wife, daughter and coheir of Sir John Fineux, Knt. Chief Justice of the King's Bench ..." The source given for the assertion that he built a bridge over the Waveney is identified as "Fuller, in Norfolk". The staff at the NRO are wonderful (I am something of a regular there myself, at least in recent months). General things to be aware of - you can't take bags/food/drink etc in but there are lockers you can use with a 20p. You'll need to sign in at reception but as long as you are just planning on looking at parish registers on film and fiche there's no real need to book ahead. If it's really busy you may need to wait a little while for a reader, but I've never found that to be the case. The staff will be quite happy to show you how to do everything. The web site will tell you much of what you need to know. -------------------------------------------------- Re: James Goodrich m Elizabeth Hogger This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
