Hi Brian and Anne, Thanks for the attached. I got the certificate for George William some time ago just in case, but that too proved not to be him. This relative of mine has cost me a small fortune in wasted certificates! I began to doubt that he actually existed, but I've traced him through two weddings and his brother John Victor was a witness at both. His mother Susanna, sadly died at the institution that became St Audrey's but I got permission to read her medical notes which were subject to the 100 year rule. She stated on her entry that she had three sons, and that, together with the census data was enough to confirm his existence for me. I have in fact traced him further, have his Army service record, but don't have his death certificate, as he vanishes later on. Sorry, I'm rambling. The Pettistree thing seems strange. I come from Felixstowe so can get around the county quite easily, and there is a bit of distance between Nacton and Pettistree. I just wondered if there was an alternative there to the workhouse. I see in 1881 they are living with her parents, father George so perhaps this is a possibility and he was called by his second name to avoid confusion: Births Jun 1881 PETTITT George William Woodbridge 4a 768 Both Nacton & Pettistree are in the Woodbridge registration district.
