Hi Phil, I think the name has been correctly indexed as Auther. The first stroke is just a marker where the enumerator (or someone else) has been counting. If you look further down the page there is an 'Alfred' where the same thing has happened. Presumably neither the family nor the enumerator knew the normal spelling for Arthur! Happy New Year to all!
