    1. [SFK-UK] ADMIN. POST - CLOSING DOWN OF ROOTSWEB
    2. P. S. & C. A. Wyant
    3. Hello, Folks. Some bad news, I'm afraid. All Rootsweb Listowners were recently advised of the following: "Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb." So, after many years and hundreds of thousands of volunteers hours by uncounted Rootsweb Listowners, Ancestry has determined that it's time to close us down in favour of more commercial options. The boards will continue, however. Many current Listowners have decided to move their lists over to other platforms, many to groups.io , although other platforms are also being used here and there. I have decided that I'm not interested in that option, so I'm looking for a new individual to take over the SUFFOLK List, including the Subscriber List and such archives as will be made available by Rootsweb. Here's a summary of how a transfer might work: https://blog.eogn.com/2020/01/10/groups-io-the-do-it-yourself-replacement-fo r-disappearing-message-boards-and-mailing-lists/ If anyone is interested in taking over this List, pls contact me off-list at: Suffolk-owner@rootsweb.com . She was the daughter of a soldier (initially NSW Corps) and Catherine RILEY (whose mother was transported to Australia in the Second Fleet). Elizabeth was born in Sydney NSW on 10 Mar 1802. She married James on 20 Jan 1819 in Launceston, TAS. I would interested in the information you say you have on James. DM me me(overswavesey+rootsweb@gmail.com)?

Forwarded from the ARCHIVES-NRA@JISCMAIL.AC.UK list, with Kate Chantry's permission. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Suffolk Archives Transformation information Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2019 17:12:17 +0000 From: Kate Chantry <00002a915c84bc30-dmarc-request@JISCMAIL.AC.UK> Reply-To: Kate Chantry <Kate.Chantry@SUFFOLK.GOV.UK> To: ARCHIVES-NRA@JISCMAIL.AC.UK Dear Colleagues We are excited to be bringing an ambitious project to Suffolk, which will transform the way we engage with archives. Set to open in Spring 2020, “The Hold: a Suffolk Archive service for the 21st Century” will create a new, flagship heritage facility, to care for and showcase our county’s records and collections. It will bring locally and nationally significant exhibitions to all Suffolk Archives branches, state of the art research facilities and more access than ever before to digital collections. The countywide activity plan which comes hand in hand with The Hold building, enables us to deliver many more archive related events, learning activities and digital programmes across Suffolk, meaning more people can truly connect with Suffolk’s unique and fascinating history than ever before. As part of the transformation:- * Lowestoft Archives will be temporarily closed between Monday 3 February and Monday 2 March 2020 for building refurbishments. * Ipswich Archives will close on 2 March 2020 for starting the final preparations for moving the archives from the current building in Gatacre Road to the new bespoke facilities at The Hold. * Collections will start to be moved from the Outstore at Bury St Edmunds Archives in March and so will be unavailable.  The collections stored in the main Bury St Edmunds Archive building will however continue to be available for study as the main building and searchroom will stay open to the public. For more information see https://www.suffolkarchives.co.uk/about-suffolk-archives/service-changes-at-suffolk-record-office/december-2019/ Kind regards Kate *Kate Chantry* Strategic Manager Suffolk Archives Strategic Development Growth, Highways and InfrastructureDirectorate Suffolk County Council Suffolk Archives Ipswich, Gatacre Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 2LQ www.suffolkarchives.co.uk <http://www.suffolkarchives.co.uk/> 'The Hold: A Suffolk Archives Service for the 21st Century' is a partnership project between Suffolk County Council and the University of Suffolk, made possible through the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund <https://www.heritagefund.org.uk/>, the Coastal Communities Fund <https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coastal-communities-fund-round-5>, the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership <https://newanglia.co.uk/>, the Garfield Weston Foundation <https://garfieldweston.org/>, the Wolfson Foundation <https://www.wolfson.org.uk/about/>, and many more see https://www.suffolkarchives.co.uk/the_hold/

It's catalogued in the printed index (with the year 1609 in brackets, denoting when it was made, not necessarily the date of probate) but apparently not yet online. The Suffolk FHS burial index includes: 1610 John BULBROKE of Hawstead buried at Hawstead 1617 Catherine BULBROOK of Hawstead at Hawstead (widow) 1626 [1625/26?] John BULBROKE at Brent Eleigh (former vicar) 1627 Alice BULBROKE at Brent Eleigh (died at Milden) David On Saturday, 7 December 2019, 13:46:06 GMT, David Vesey <veseybrown@sympatico.ca> wrote: Apologies for original posting going to wrong address. 1. [SFK-UK] Re: [EXTERNAL] flint surname norfolk/suffolk
    2. David Gobbitt
    3. Hello Roger You probably know that James COOKE, an agricultural labourer living at Brooke, Norfolk, in 1841 and 1851, was christened at Needham, Norfolk, in 1795 as a son of Josh or Jesh COOK and Mary, late FLINT, although his name was James Cook FLINT when he married Ann SHINGLES at Blofield, Norfolk, in 1827. If Josh or Jesh was Jesse COOK, perhaps Mary was a sister of his wife Elizabeth FLINT (m. Fressingfield 1791). The Suffolk FHS has transcribed these Fressingfield baptisms: Children of Robert & Mary FLINT: 1772 Elizabeth 1774 William 1776 Mary 1777 Mary 1779 Sarah Children of Jesse & Elizabeth COOK: 1792 Sarah 1793 William Burials at Fressingfield include Mary COOK in 1776 and Elizabeth COOK aged 74 in 1852 but the only FLINTs indexed by the SFHS are Robert (c.1739-1813) and Mary (c.1742-1829). More positively, there is a settlement certificate dated 1791 for Jesse COOK and his wife Elizabeth of Needham, Norfolk, among the parish records of Fressingfield at the Suffolk Record Office (https://www.suffolkarchives.co.uk/collections/getrecord/GB173_EG16_G_7_76). I imagine Elizabeth may have become incapacitated, causing Mary to look after Jesse and his children, while remarriage would not have been a legal option unless he was widowed. However, Edward, son of Jesse and Elizabeth COOK, was baptized at Gissing, Norfolk, in April 1797 (and Jesse COOK was buried there the following month) so the 1795 christening at Needham is still puzzling if the name of James COOKE's mother was indeed Mary.
