    1. [SFK-UK] Suffolk persons on London Lives
    2. Giles Colchester
    3. There are several persons who were from Suffolk who are recorded on the new London Lives website. http://www.londonlives.org/formPersName.jsp The prime search facility is by surname, but I was also able on one of their options to just search for references to Suffolk, and that showed that there are many references which should be of interest to researchers on this list. The data is mostly 18th century but there are references to other periods. Some of the data is a replication of: the PCC wills (on the TNA website), Old Bailey data (on the old Bailey website), and the London Guildhall records for insurance records (on the A2A website), but there are some records, particularly on the London sessions, which are new and which also have a link to the underlying original document. Altogether a useful website, and I very much look forward to seeing how people make use of the wiki that they are hoping to add to it for researchers to record biographical details of the persons identified in the records. Wishing you every success in your researches Giles Colchester, Researching COLCHESTER family, any spelling, any time, any place And PACKARD in Suffolk

    3. David, the couple that now own the house only open to the public a couple of times a year. There is no actual tourist shop there, although they do have a few small items on sale, I did not see any postcards. We took a few photographs when visiting last year, will see what I have and forward them to you. Only some of the rooms are available to visitors. The couple themselves dress up in period costume, as did their children. Will keep a look out for their next opening weekend and advise you - might be worth reposting request at that time. Pat ... Do you know Lois Olley in Canada? She contacte me today about George. This is the reply I sent her though I guess you know it all anyway. Doing some research for Lois I found a George Olley in Bury St Edmunds Prison (Suffolk) on 8 November 1831 serving 4 weeks for poaching with hingles (no idea what they are) don't have George in my tree; my Olleys go back to 1610 in Finchingfield in the north of Essex; it's highly likely that George is a relative but I've no idea what the connection is. However being a nosey bugger on a Sunday morning with very little to do I have done some research (you may already know this): Name: George OLLEY Sex: M Birth: 25 DEC 1797 in Stanton, Suffolkshire, England Death: 5 DEC 1906 in Great Bend, Wilna, Jefferson, NY Burial: West Carthage, Champion, Jefferson, NY Note: >From Child's Gazetteer of Jefferson County--Town of Wilna. "George Olley was born in England, in 1802, and in 1832 immigrated to this country. In 1834, he married Ann Hunter, who was born in Ireland in 1801. About 1838 he removed to the town of Champion, and there remained until 1865, when he located in Wilna, on road 70, where he now resides with his son James. He had born to him eight children, of whom William served in Co. C, 94th N.Y Vols., came home on furlough, and died November 25, 1864. Robert enlisted in Co. H, 186th N.Y. Vols., was in the battle of Cedar Mountain, August 9, 1862, in the battles of Rappahannock, Thoroughfare Gap, and second Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg; was taken prisoner and paroled; was discharged February, 28, 1864, at Camp Parole, by reason reenlistment as a veteran volunteer; was in the battle of Weldon Railraod, and was again taken prisoner, August 19, 1864, and was confined in Libby Prison, and subsequently tranferred to Buell Island and Salisbury, N.C. He was paroled February 28, 1865,! and mustered out June 11, 1865. He married Sarah Ann, daughter of Benona Goldthrite, by whom he has had six children, viz: Minnie B., Cora T., who died April 29, 1870, Adah E., J. Herbert, Cora E., who died Mar 22, 1886, and George B.. George Olley Jr. enlisted in Co. I, 94th N.Y. Vols., and was drum-major of the regiment. He died in 1870. Samuel D., another son of George Sr., died young. Mary Ann died at the age of 19 years. Margaret J. married Chester Goldthrite, and resides at Felt's Mills." Note: 15 Oct 1905 in the Carthage Republican "George Olley, 107 years old, cast his 86th ballot last week at Deferiet, voting the straight Republican ticket as he has every time election day has come around. Mr. Olley claims that since he came to this state from England and became a citizen he has never missed an election day." He left Carthage on the 106th anniversary of his birth and made the trip without taking advantage of a sleeper. In all his travels, and he is continually visiting relatives in far-away places, he has never indulged in the Pullman sleeper. Mr. Olley never wore glasses. His eyesight is yet unimpaired, and he is a omniverous reader, keeping fully abreast of the times, not only on matters of current news, but in History topics as well. I found out that Bruce Olley and I are related through the sons of "Uncle" George. My father emigrated to Canada in 1951. There were mistakes in newspaper articles about "Uncle George". Some had him born 1802, 1804. Our family has always known it was Dec 25, 1797. Census birth years were worked out from the persons age at the time of the census and that left a one year margin for error. I have a document declaring George's son, John, was christened in 1831 S. Lopham NFK so he could not have been born in 1833. Our family has info Geo emigrated from UK yr 1832 with infant son (no mention of 1 st wife with). There was a cholera pandemic spreading throughout Europe 1832 and brought to the New World on board ship. I paid a look-up in Suffolk to check birth and death records in Suffolk parishes for George and his parents and families in the era around his birth until he emigrated to N. America 1832. The report back showed nothing on record. In the past few days I found a William Olley and Martha Child of Lowestoft, Suffolk married at St. Botolph, Aldgate, London, in 1772. They were about the right age and about 40 miles East of Stanton Suffolk but the trail stopped dead again. The Child's gazetteer (and PIONEER Families of ....)is an invaluable tool for those starting their NY searches. At this stage we are going to England for ancestors and it is a brick wall situation that will require either much money or ancestry.com folk to help with lookups. Took him in a cart, as a boy of 5 years, to a neighboring city that they might see his Majesty George III ride through the streets while making a journey to the castle of one of his barons. The old Brunswicker, as George remembered him, was an imposing looking man with a big red face and a white plumed chappeau. He was preceded by a squad of buglers and a detachment of mounted guards armed with long pole axes, while more halberdiers, rode behind the royal coach. He told too, as he had on many Christmas night before, of the great celebration in England when the mewscame of the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo by Wellington, when from Snowden to Ben Nevisevery mountain top in the United Kingdom blazed with the great bale fires prepared for calling out the yeomanry to repel the dreaded French invasion, but which were kindled when such need of them no longer existed to glorify the return of piece." "George was born and raised near the village of Stanton, England, and work on his Grandshires farm as a ploughman and sheppard. When 26years old, he was married in the Parrish church, to Barbara Ann Carman, a peasent girl, and four years later sailed with his young wife and infant son for Amarica. The passage by the old brig Nell Gwyane taking eight weeks. Soon after arriving here his wife died. He took up a farm in the then wild region of the Black River Valley at Great Bend, and soon after married Miss Ann Hunter of this City, who was born in Ireland in 1801, of English parentage." ------------------------------------------------- Re: George Olley brn:1797 This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. About 10 miles to the south is Stanton Street a small hamelt close to the village of Norton whose parish church is St Andrews; it may be worth searching for George there. A second point is that George appeared to be a Methodist; most searches pre 1831 are carried out through parish records; if George were baptised a Methodist he would not be in the parish records which may explain why your researcher was not able to locate him Mark -------------------------------------------------

    3. Hi All I am entering the realms of the unknown I believe that my Gt Uncle Jesse Barnes well his 2nd wife adopted 3 children I am guessing while he was alive they married in 1936 & he died in 1961 They lived at Brooklyn Cottage Great Barton, what I been told is that she adopted 3 children 1 being a baby from a Irish lass & the other 2 were older at the time of adoption I don't know much else at present. This got me wondering if there is a register to check out people who adopt children as I mean you can't check the GRO for a birth for them so where does one look Regards Janice

    3. Hi again There are two William MESSENGER births registered in 1858 in Plomesgate Plomesgate is the registration district, it covers many places see :- http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/plomesgate.html Any birth that occurred in the list of places that Plomesgate covers *should* be registered there, including Marlesford To explain my logic in suggesting the later birth reg is yours These are the two Marlesford baptisms WILLIAM MESSENGER Christening: 16 APR 1858 Marlesford, Suffolk, England Father: JAMES MESSENGER Mother: MARY C062691 1813 - 1876 0919624 Film 883882 Film WILLIAM MESSENGER Christening: 26 SEP 1858 Marlesford, Suffolk, England Father: CHARLES MESSENGER Mother: MARY C062691 1813 - 1876 0919624 Film 883882 Film And the two birth registrations Births Jun 1858 Messenger William Plomesgate 4a 602 Births Sep 1858 Messenger William Plomesgate 4a 563 Most baptisms occurred soon after birth and the two baptisms fit into the periods in which the birth would be registered So the later baptism is most likely to be the later birth registered If the register was transcribed to the IGI by the same person you could understand why they still had a Mary in their mind when they got to the second William being baptized (although there is also an Alice with parents Charles & Mary) In 1861 James & Marys William is enumerated as 3 years old, Charles & Eliza's as 2 years old The birth cert will give you the mothers maiden name and often an address (which may be the same as the 1861 address Personally I would not be surprised to find both Williams were born in Marlesford and there was a family relationship between James and Charles (such as brothers, both sons of Thomas and Elizabeth) The most likely marriages are Marriages Dec 1845 JAYE Mary Plomesgate 12 792 MESSENGER James Plomesgate 12 792 Marriages Mar 1853 CABLE Eliza Plomesgate 4a 809 MESSENGER Charles Plomesgate 4a 809 With family history there is always room for errors to creep in so keep your mind open to them :-) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Ken, > > Thank you for your reply. > I did see the birth notice at Plomsgate.
