I am visiting Suffolk in two weeks time and wondered if someone who lives in or around LANGHAM can help me. The 1891 census shows my great grandfather GREGORY STIFF living in No 40 HUNSTON ROAD, LANGHAM. Although the road is still there - I would love to find No 40 and take a picture of where they lived if possible. Many thanks for any help anyone can give me. Shirley

I skimmed each of these sections for the cited reference. I find a reference to the River Waveney (Waueney) on page 357, but it doesn't seem to pertain to the bridge. Searching under "flumen", "flu", "fluuio", "fluvio" and other similar terms, I looked for any reference without success. * I am wondering if this reflects a complete misattribution to John ROPER, or whether there is a piece of valid lore within the account. No doubt there was more than one bridge over the Waveney. There was a very early ROPER family at Hoxne, which is also on the Waveney, and ROPERs in several of the other towns bordering Norfolk and Suffolk. Sir John ROPER served from Feb 1522 through 01 Apr 1524. At the eastern extremity of this hundred, is St. Olave's Bridge, which is said to have been built at teh expense of Sir James Hobart, Knight, Attorney-general to King Henry the Seventh; who also directed a causeway to be raised over the adjoining boggy ground. It appears, however, from a manuscript in possession of Mr. Aldis, of Beccles, that these improvements were made at the expense and desire of Dame Hobart, wife of the said Sir James. A bridge had been projected here in the time of Edward the First, and the scheme brought forward in subsequent reigns, but never put in execution till the period here assigned. Dame Hobart's bridge having been found to be in a very decayed state, was taken down about the year 1770, and the present handsome freestone structure erected, at the join! t expense of the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk." To the extent that this account is true, the bridge may have been erected LATER. Even in this account, there isn't any great reason to believe that John ROPER had a role in its construction, unless the Crown had a role in its financing and construction, wherein it might seem possible that he might have yet had a role as attorney-general. It would appear that someone has put this in their tree on Ancestry without checking details, and then dozens of other trees have picked it up without research. Oddly enough, these same trees have John dying in Ufford in 1735, but happily producing children in the afterlife! So how cam Edmund b 1771 (calculated fron burial record, but NOT baptised in Dennington) possibly be the son of this John? Don't forget that poor Barbara would be way into her 60's! This family is on the 1871 census. The child, Robert is (I believe) your man. The census records actually says he is 23, but this is impossible, as he is described as the son of the other two, who are aged 30 and 20 respectively. I think it means 23 months, and this ties in with a birth which I have found in Scotland. Your niece will find the staff very helpful if she hasn't carried out research before. At any of the Record Offices it is advisable to book a microfiche reader in advance so as not to have a wasted journey. Bury St Edmunds have Fiche of most of the Suffolk Parishes as do Lowestoft, and Ipswich have full records and other parish records like barstardy bonds parish chests etc. Bury St Edmunds is a little on the small side. Ipswich is a dream to work at. and Lowestoft is farly reasonable size, Honor Please don't judge me on what I have achieved, but what I have overcome. Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body. There's an unmarried Frances Shulver, cousin, Dressmaker b Kenton 1852 with the family of Samuel Grant (Gun Makers Manager) at 8 Denbigh St, St George's Hanover Sq. in 1881 which ties in with the other information you have, so I think you have the right Fanny. There is SHULVER born at Kenton, Suffolk born c1852 which seems to fit so I'm presuming she is this one. George is not on the 1891census. There is a Fanny Steele age 32 b Kenton. Hi Suffolk researchers everywhere, Amongst the many hundred of LAW, LAWE, LAWES and LAWS in our LAWS FAMILY REGISTER database, I have one Ermine S Laws, now they could be alive as they were born in 1936, but what I'd love to know whether Ermine was a boy or girl they had a brother Paul who was born and died in 1938 to parents Mr LAWS & Mrs LAWS formerly CANHAM for whom I can't find a marriage, the children were registered at Lothingland that's between Lowestoft and Yarmouth on Burgh Island. On another tack, my late father John Robert Laws was disturbed one day whilst standing in Hadleigh churchyard and looking down he found he was standing next to a grave with his name on, this John Robert LAWS 1881-1957 belonged to Sudbury but I've yet to discover anything about him. My mother who still lives in the area, told me once that my dad was an unsung local hero, it would appear that he rescued a woman from the River Brett, I've never discovered the circumstances, there was nothing in his personal effects, and knowing him for the man he was, it would have been not in his nature to brag about it, during WWII he was a bomber pilot with 158 squadron also a time he never talked about.
