    3. I am still on the prowl for my elusive Daniel Death. A possible fit might just be Daniel Death b. 1787 Bury St, Edmunds shown on both the 1851 and 1861 Census records. He is also shown as being a Chelsea pensioner and a bricklayer. All my other Daniels are bricklayers so this might just be a good fit. I pulled what information I could from the British Army Records using Find My Past and found that this Daniel enlisted 6 Dec 1813 at Bow, Middlesex in the 4th Regiment of Foot. I also have copies of his discharge papers dated 8 Aug 1827 at the age of 41. During his time with the 4th Regiment of Foot he was stationed in East or West Indies. The records don't indicate which. He was discharged due to chronic rheumatism and worn out. Using Ancestry and whatever other sources are available, I have searched high and low for this man between his discharge in 1827 and his death sometime after the 1861 Census. In 1851 and 1861 he is married to Elizabeth, also born abt 1797 Bury St, Edmunds. My question is where would I find non conformist records? I would like to locate a marriage for this Daniel, and also a birth or christening for another Daniel Death b. abt. 1810 Bury St. Edmunds who is my direct ancestor. Thanks. Sheila Dowdell, Toronto.

You can use the online version of the IGI to search for a single surname in a specific county. There is then the facility for downloading up to 50 names in GEDCOM format. These can be imported in batches into any Family History software program and depending on the software can be exported to Excel if that is you preferred method of research. I appreciate that this might not match up with your present way of recording but you should be able to manipulate the data in Excel to suit. This does save the chance of a transcription error as all you are doing is transferring a copy of the original data. There is also the question of your own particular computer skills but with a bit of trial and error with the first batch of 50, the rest should be easy. I am posting this as a help to others who may be thinking of using the IGI records for their own research. Brian

    3. Hello Folks, Thanks to all who have tried to help, it is always much appreciated. and over 25 years of researching I have had some fantastic assistance Just to inform those who are interested I was born in Surrey, my Dad & one pair of G. parents in Kent, my gt G, parents in Sussex and others in IOW and though I live in the USA I am just a plain old Limey. I still use the old Fiche when on a new hunt as I can go into the local LDS FHC and using my camera (at no cost) copy by surname and by county those I want. Go home and copy them into my computer and then transcribe them into an Excell file by location (Parish) & family In the case of this current research its was 51 fiche with an average of 50 entries per fiche I also have an Ancestry .com subscription and search that also, and over the years I would say that the IGI has been 95% accurate. Yes they have errors but they do seem to come more from members inputs but not from transcribed Parish Registers. Back to Suffolk, where my difficulties seem to come more from my lack of knowledge of how many Suffolk Registers were filmed by the LDS, what private transcriptions are available etc Hope this helps folks understand where I am comong from Phil White

    3. Hello Phil. Have you come across a William OSBORN(E) marrying an Ann Green @1798? Could be earlier as she was born in 1769 at Great Wratting. I believe they married in Suffolk, but no idea where. The first known child I have for them was born in Stanningfield. Have looked at the LDS film for Stanningfield and came to the conclusion that the family was just 'passing through' William Osborne is one of my mega brick walls. Phil As you have found the parishes of East Hampton and South Hampton do not exist in Suffolk. The nearest I can find is Hampton, Middlesex or the major port of Southampton! You are correct in saying that Suffolk County Bts are the Bishops Transcripts for Suffolk. I see that you are transcribing from fiche and not using the online IGI - do you have the Film No. for the entries as you could then find other entries on the film as normally all the Suffolk entries are on the same film. This may help to discover if the County is correct and would enable you or another researcher to have a look at the film to find adjacent entries which might help to find the correct parish. However searching the film can be a long and arduous task. Brian

    3. I would start your search at the National Portrait Gallery in London - yes, I appreciate that this is difficult if you are in Tasmania. I visited their archives earlier this year to look at document relating to Sir Joshua Reynolds. You will find a published Catalogue raisonne of his works, which lists every painting he produced and every sitter known about. I think that the one that is regarded as definitive is the one by Manning, but an art historian will correct me. I am sure that a copy of this book will be available in an art library in Tasmania. His diaries and sitter books for most years have survived, and can also be searched. The NPG has a card index which is not available on line of references to who holds what portrait - which as you can guess will be both out of date and incomplete, but for a famous picture you are more likely to strike lucky. They also have "green boxes" in which copies of pictures are held by artist and by sitter which often gives notes as to where the picture is (or more likely was). 3. Hi James I conducted a similar search for a missing family portrait several years ago and tracked it down in the following way. I found that the National Portrait Gallery in London keeps an index of portraits that are held by private owners/museums in the UK outside its own collection. They also may have photos of them. You could try contacting the National Gallery Archive team here: archive@npg.org.uk Good luck! As I live in Australia, I suppose the only way to look at the parish registers to see if there is any other detail would be to obtain film through the local FHC. I am thinking that after looking at a number of records over the last few days, the Sarah Reason marriage is the more likely one, considering the location of the marriage but that does not quite solve where they were in 1841. My guess is they were either in the Indies at that time or in Australia. I did do a search in the census for just Sarah but did not find anything. I have done some pretty extensive searching over the last couple of days on Ancestry, FindMyPast, FamilySearch (IGI and the Beta Site) in searching for connections and information on the Baldwin Family and my initial search to see if there was a marriage for John in the East Indies began when I saw the other day that there were a number of public trees on Ancestry that had my Ancestor Susan Baldwin (bc 1844 Bures Suffolk) attached to them. I just wanted to see if there was a possibility that he married outside of the UK. Most of the trees have her mother to be Sarah Munnings, one has Sarah (no surname) and another Sarah Chambers and most also have the same '6' children attached to them. There is a marriage in Dec 1825 between a John Baldwin & Sarah Munnings and from what I can see on the census records, they had 6 children, one a Susan Baldwin born in 1845 in Suffolk, which is why there is some confusion. I do believe that this marriage and the associated children are not c! onnected to my John & Sarah Baldwin. There appears to be at least 2 other John and Sarah Baldwins living in the Suffolk area in 1841, 1851 & 1861. My Susan Baldwin had a sister Maryann, who was born around 1840, who married James Rice in 1860. Maryann is a witness on the marriage certificate for Susan Baldwin & William George Baker (married in 1863 at Woolwich Kent). Why they married in Kent for is not known, but further research shows that William George Baker was the cousin of James Rice. So two cousins, married two sisters. John Baldwin (1806) is living in 1851 with wife Sarah (age 47) and daugthers Maryann (11) and Susan (8) in registration district Sudbury. He is listed as 'Chelsea Pensioner'. John is living in 1861 with daughter Susan (17) at Bures St Mary. By this time Sarah had died. I do have a death certificate for a Sarah Baldwin in 1856, wife of John, AG Labourer. She was 54. I've always thought that this death was for my Sarah, but now I'm not so sure as yesterday I found another two deaths for Sarah Baldwins both in 1859, one in Sudbury and the other in Bury St Edmonds. John is living in 1871 with daughter Maryann and her husband James Rice at Assington, Suffolk. John died in June 1871. Thankyou all for your replys and suggestions, I will keep searching. It is a bit speculative, but on the subject of uncommon names one of Arthur and Harriet's sons was called Rufus (which is pretty uncommon) And Glemsue pointed out that Arthur's birthplace in 1911 was Coddenham, Suffolk, and he was 63 then, so birthdate moved back into the 1840s. There is this likely death for Arthur? Doesn't appear to be an Arthur Ward born Coddenham in the census, but there is a Rufus Ward baptised there, 19 February 1837, to Robert and Susanna. So there might be a connection. Rufus didn't have a brother Arthur, and his parents would be too old by then anyway. Rufus might have had a sister Harriet, someone has submitted a baptism to the IGI, hopefully its accurate. Harriet Ward bapt. 18 April 1824 to Robert and Susanna, and an Elizabeth Ward on the same day, same parents. They may be the only Ward family in Coddenham. So maybe Arthur was illegitimate and hidden under the Farthing name. If he didn't die at sea or anything, he might turn up again later as Arthur Ward perhaps? 3. I have found a bronze campaign medal with my grandfather's name around the edge - HARRY PALMER SANGSTER It states 'For War Service Mercantile Marine, 1914 1918'. and was for Campaign Service. I have found a write up about the medal and it states it was awarded to members of the Merchant Navy for one or more voyages through a war or danger zone during the course of WW1. How can I find out where he went and what he did and what ship(s) he was on. All the records I can find are for army personnel. I have also found his British War Medal - which men were given these ? and would it have been connected to his service at sea. Any help re where I can find his details appreciated. I was always led to believe that he was living in Horley in Surrey all through WW1. Shirley

    3. I am still trying to locate a picture of Daniel Sutton Jnr (1768 - 1859 - Essex and, latterly, Tasmania )- son of Daniel Sutton [ the great small-pox inoculator ] Having tried every possible source in Tasmania - with a total lack of success ! I think I must revert back to his earlier home, and accept an image at a much earlier age. My only reference is a book - published 1913 - " Ingatestone and the Great Essex Road including Fryerning -Author : E E Wilde - published by Humphrey Milford - Oxford University Press - 1913, which on page 277 states : " There is still in the possession of the family a fine oil painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, of Daniel Sutton, the inoculators, in the prime of life, seated, in plum coloured coat, knee-breeches, white silk stockings and powdered hair; also another portrait of him, one of his wife, and others of his children, and their descendants - all with the sharp-cut nose that is so marked a feature in the father and son, and most of them very good-looking" Are any of the correspondents to this list a member of the family, or know of any descendants who may be able to assist with locating one, or some, of the pictures referred to above. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated James P <jamesp006@optusnet.com.au>

    3. Thanks to a great deal of help from this list I was able to check and discover a lot of information during my recent holiday in Suffolk. I took photographs of the fonts where ancestors were baptised, interiors of churches where they were married and had drinks in three of the Inns they owned !!. We were able to get the key to gain admission to Stowlangtoft Church as suggested. I have sent for a marriage certificate and when I receive this I will be contacting Carl again who may be able to help re a birth certificate. I found the staff at the Suffolk Record Office in Bury very helpful. As suggested I was unable to find actual addresses where the censuses showed they lived, not surprising after 110 years. However I have been able to add a lot to the information I already had about the life of each individual for the family history I am compiling. Many thanks to all Shirley
