    1. [SFK-UK] British Prisoners of War - [1st World War] British Red Cross
    2. Eddie Tricker
    3. Hi All In relation to my grand father's WW1 service, the bulk of which he spent in Germany as a POW, I had a look for references to "Prisoner of War Records - British Red Cross" through Google, which gave me this answer. In my case there are no existing records for my grnadfather's WW 1 service; his records were amongst those lost with the German bombings of London. The information that I do have was pieced together from 2 family postcards, my grandfather's medals card and family stories. I thought those on this Forum would like to see the information below Records of prisoners of war The British Red Cross does not hold records of individual prisoners of war or civilian internees. These are held by the <http://www.icrc.org/>International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Geneva. Part of the humanitarian work of the ICRC involves gathering information on individuals who are prisoners of war and, in recent years, on those who have been separated from their families by conflict or disaster. This information can then be used to put family members in touch and also, in the case of prisoners of war, to ensure that accurate attestation can be provided if necessary to give ex-prisoners of war documentary evidence of their imprisonment. Today, this humanitarian work continues as prisoners are taken and communities continue to be disrupted by conflict. Searching for the records of an individual prisoner of war is a complex and skilled task, carried out by staff within the archives division and research service of the ICRC. A search can be made on receipt of a written request. Please be sure to provide as much detail as possible in your letter. It is essential that you include the name and nationality of the individual you are enquiring about. The following information, if known, is also extremely helpful to their search: * date of birth * place of birth * name of father * date of capture * regiment * army number Researchers should bear in mind that these records were compiled for humanitarian reasons and the ICRC is still fully occupied with similar humanitarian work in the present day. Searches of a historical nature may therefore take a considerable time to complete. To apply for a record of a prisoner of war, or for more information, please write to: Archives division and research service International Committee of the Red Cross 19 Avenue de la Paix Geneva CH-1202 Switzerland regards eddie tricker Australia

    3. Hi Listers A short message of thanks to all who sent me advice on the above subject through the Forum; and to those who wrote to me "back channel" and offered to help by searching for my grandfather's records on Ancestry. A special thanks to Robert for this help in this area. But it is a fact that nothing exists of my grandfather's records of service! It is with faint hope that the International Committee of the Red Cross, may, just may, have some records on my grandfather, Charles, as he spent the bulk of his army service with them as a Prisoner of War. So this will be my next endeavour. thanks to all eddie tricker Australia

    3. Folks, Every week or so (or whenever the digest gets to about 20 KB), I'm forwarding to the List those posts that have been "gatewayed" from RootsWeb's SUFFOLK Board that might contain information of interest to List subscribers, and here's the current "digest" of such gatewayed posts. I have both those editions at home. My husband bought the 1855 for me as a birthday thirty five years ago :-) Due to so much use I had to have it completely re-stitched a couple of years ago. I have been lucky enough to use PRs that go up to the 1920s and have helped solve a lot of family queries on one of my lines over the years. Often you find more information is recorded in later entries too. Birth Certificates are not available at the local Record Office. You can order birth certificates from the General Register Office, but you need the correct information to hand to order them, make sure you have the correct ancestor. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ Burgh Castle is now in Norfolk and the PRs are at the Norfolk Register Office in Norwich. http://www.archives.norfolk.gov.uk/nroindex.htm We visited Burgh Castle and walked around the ruins of the castle in the rain earlier this year :-) We did not find much of the old village. However the views from the castle were wonderful. Author: Gobbitt Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8627.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Glad to have been of some help, Robert. Mildenhall would seem to be ruled out by the date of the marriage (before Thomas Robinson's appointment there) and by the signature of Sturley Nunn, the Superintendent Registrar, whose office was presumably in Ixworth or Bury St Edmunds. Many Thingoe officials clearly conducted a lot of union business within the enclave of Bury, and I see no reason why he should not have done so too, particularly for a couple as close as Rougham. If the location of the 1840 wedding was not announced in local newspapers, it could still be worth checking them for others held at the Superintendent's Office, to determine the normal practice at that time. I understand that register offices exact hefty fees from visitors who search the district indexes (the actual registers being closed to public scrutiny) but perhaps there is an affordable alternative. Superintendent registrars had to maintain "marriage notice books" recording, inter alia, the buildings in which proposed marriages were to be solemnized. Until 1840 these notices were read out at Poor Law guardians' meetings and possibly included in their minutes, while the books were always intended to be made available "without Fee to all Persons desirous of inspecting the same". The original provision in section V of the 1836 Act for Marriages in England (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~framland/acts/1835Act.htm) was repeated in very similar terms by the 1949 Marriage Act, part III, section 27(4) (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~framland/acts/1949Act.htm): "The superintendent registrar shall file all notices of marriage and keep them with the records of his office, and shall also forthwith enter the particulars given in every such notice ... in a book ... and the marriage notice book shall be open for inspection free of charge at all reasonable hours." Although there is just one volume from eastern England (Hertfordshire) catalogued at A2A, some of those books have been transferred to county record offices, indicating not only that they remain free from the restrictions imposed on the closely-guarded BMD registers, but also that they no longer have to be kept by registrars. So is the Superintendent Registrar in Bury St Edmunds obliged to produce Thingoe's inherited marriage notice book(s) on demand and without payment? I have seen this, Samuel Howlett Baptised 1835, Woolpit, sent to me by a distant relative, thank you. I think this may be him because his father is John Howlett,a Blacksmith, which is stated on his marriage cert, in 1864, Reigate, Surrey. I have had this problem before, when searching for my gt grandfather on my fathers side. But why on earth do they give wrong ages on all census returns also on marriage certs. When Samuel Howlett married Eliza Slow in 1864, Samuel is age 24 and Eliza age 21. So Samuel should have been born about 1840. So about 5 years out, I could understand one or two years out but not five. Thanks again for your help. Joan -------------------------------------------------- Aldham parish look up? I have done a separate study on the Bantoft and have a separate tree for this family alone. I was interested in your posting earlier this year about the distributing of James's children after the death of his wife Caroline Plant and I had to conclude that you must have got some of that data either from the relevant certs. or the parish records as I think it is impossible to come to those conclusions from BMD's & census returns alone, unless I have missed something? I have tried to contact you through an email address that was attached to one of your postings but this was returned and now I see the address has disappeared from the posting, I ma! y be able to persuade a friend to to do the look up you are requesting & that I am very curious about also, regards Terry -------------------------------------------------- Re: The Matthews Family Cockfield Suffolk This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I understand that the Evening Star, Ipswich Journal(?) and East Anglian Daily Times were in production at that time and was hoping that the obituary might be in one of those papers. I'm not sure where these papers would be located and as I live in Canada, I am unable to look the records up personally. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful as I need to find out more about my Grandfather. Thanks. George joined the British Army in 1858 & following his discharge in 1880 he & his family migrated to Tasmania. Our dilemma is that while his BC lists parents as Benjamin & Mary, his Tasmanian descendants assert that his parents were James Bantoft & Charlotte Plant. This led us to theorize as to what happened to the children of James & Charlotte after Charlotte's death and one thought is that the children were shared out between James' parents & brothers, who lived nearby. With limited funds we could only speculate using some BDMs, also IGI & censuses but I'm happy to send you pdf.s of the family charts if you send me your email address to: rmgaris@bigpond.net.au We'd be grateful for any info you can supply from lookups - to prove or disprove our theory! Author: Robesure Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/8633.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I doubt if the parish records of Elmswell would help you unless the couple married there, which I doubt as James (not John) was born in Colchester Essex and Emma in East Bergholt. It is more likely that the marriage was in East Bergholt. If you purchase a copy of the birth certificate of any of the children, this will give the mother's maiden name. The reason that you cannot find the family prior to 1891 is that they were using the surname SANSOM. There is a marriage of a James Sansom in the Samford district,(which includes East Bergholt), Dec.Quarter 1857, volume 4a, page 1199. A possible partner with that reference is an Emma Pettingale. However these references are not complete because of the poor condition of the copies from which they are taken and I cannot see an Emma Pettingale born in East Bergholt on the 1851 census, although there was a birth registered in Samford in 1840, of an Emma Pettengale, which would make her about the right age, for your Emma Curtis/Sansom. A copy of James Sansom's marriage certificate will give you the answer. In 1861 James Sansom 24 a platelayer and Emma 20 are living at Railway Street, Newmarket, with a son James 2. In 1871 they are now in Elmswell with James 12, William 8, George 5 and Edward 3. In 1881 they are at Elmswell Road, Elmswell with additional children, John 9 Emma 6 and Eliza 5. Come 1891 as you are aware they have for some reason changed there name to Curtis and are still living in Elmswell with the younger children. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Elmswell, Suffolk Parish Look-ups. 1. [SFK-UK] LEE-GODLEY -WADDY family connection.
    2. Robert Campbell
    3. Anyone on this message list have a family tree connection to the LEE-GODLEY-WADDY surnames? After a few years absence have now found possibly a connection within this county to perhaps my long lost great uncle Frederick LEE born Islington, Middlesex, last seen on the 1911 census at Lower Edmonton. Strong possibility that My man was christened Frederick Percy LEE. Frederick Percy LEE married Mabel Lucy Tatman GOBLEY in the district of Barnet in 1914. It seems this couple had a son Douglas G LEE born in the district of BARNET IN 1928. Douglas G LEE then moved to the district of Newmarket where he married an Audrey V WADDY at Newmarket in 1948. I understand Newmarket district encompases part of the county of Suffolk, hence my return to this message list. Douglas LEE died at Newmarket in 1987 and his parents Frederick and Mabel LEE in 1969 and 79 respectively. So anyone on list with this family connection? cheers Bob in sunny Queensland

    3. Hi Eddie As you say there are a few TRICKERs around Suffolk Now you didn't say when he was born or who his parents were, was yours the one born 1877 ? Parents Charles & Sarah ? If so there does not appear to be a trace of him in the WW1 service or so called pension records but as only approximately one third survived WW2 its not surprising Do you have his medals by any chance? There are two medal cards for a Charles TRICKER who served with the Suffolk Regiment as follows ============== TRICKER Charles W Suffolk Regiment Private 17907 Labour Corps 696787 Entered Theatre of War (France) 11th March 1915 1915 Star Victory Medal British War Medal Address 58 Gibson Street, St Helens, Ipswich =============== TRICKER Charles Suffolk Regiment Private 8274 Entered Theatre of War (France) 16th January 1915 1915 Star Victory Medal British War Medal ================ If you have his medals there will be his number around the rim of them Do either ring any bells ? Nothing else found unfortunately If the man I mentioned above born 1877 is not yours let me know who his parents were and when born Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > G'day Folks > My grandfather served in WW 1 and survived. > > He is Charles William Tricker, from Boxford, Suffolk. 3. Good morning Pat  Thank you for all your help and interesting information. I must try again to find the link between my Potter's and AG Potter. If it exsists. My elderly mother, now in her late ninties, says that in the thirties and early forties both families were in contact. Certainly both families appear to have come from a working background.  I have received details of the following site from Mr. Charles Fuller www.bmdregisters.co.uk/index.php this is the site I found the other day and later today I will register with them to continue my search. 3. G'day Folks My grandfather served in WW 1 and survived. An inquiry made by myself back in the early 1990's found that his service records were destroyed during the London bombings of the second World war. I was and am aware that the records people were putting the remains of the burnt records together and then scanning them, creating a digital record of the surviving documents. It was still in progress during my last inquiry. I also realize by this time that such work must be completed and the results somewhere on-line for people to check if there any any "burnt World War 1 records" for their forebears. I do not have access to Ancestry, and am wondering if they are available from any other source, eg National Archives? Help and advice of this forum sought please. regards eddie tricker Australia
