    3. Australia now has flooding causing evacuation in Qld, NSW, Victoria and NSW. Living in QLD naturally our news says little about the other States but, for example, some people in Victoria have been evacuated for the second time in 3 months. And Western Australia seems to have their bushfires under control. It¹s a big country! Jim From: Patricia Bridges <patricia@bridgessuffolk.plus.com> No need to apologise Desley, We are watching in horror at the television news reports of the terrible floods in Queensland.

Currently Brisbane has experienced the most dreadful flood which has devastated the city with people's homes and businesses completely inundated. It is unbelievable and just heartbreaking. We are okay living on the northside of Brisbane but there are a few priorities that need to be attended to and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Desley Revell

    1. [SFK-UK] WOPUN - Woplin
    2. Eddie Tricker
    3. G'day Listers The point I made in my previous message was that the transcription was wrong! Despite the abysmal hand writing and spelling by the original enumerator, to my eyes with glasses on, the surname was clearly WOPLIN in the scanned image! A blind man and his dog would have seen the "dot" above the one of the squiggles, and the "L" was clearly that, an "L". Another lister has also kindly notified me that a correction has been lodged with "FindMyPast' also to correct this error in their database. This error also sits in a wider family members web site, and famously most folks who have seen this data have accepted it as correct, unfortunately! Nivard thank you for your detailed explanation of making corrections to the Ancestry web site. regards eddie tricker

    3. Hi all, I find the updates in ancestry remarkably useful. They can fix incorrect calculations of birthdate, spelling of birthplace (often quite garbled), give variations of a first or last name (I have an Alphareeta who became Alfreda in later decades). The maiden names when added can help trace back generations. I can't see how entering a maiden name "confuses the picture" as it doesn't change the info in the census at all. Carol B. 2. Desley Revell
    3. Thank you Nivard for your comments about my posting regarding Bridge House in Bridge Street, Bungay. They were much appreciated. The ancestor living there at the time of the 1911 Census was Benjamin REVELL Details taken from FindMyPast are: RG14; Piece No: 10994; Reference: RG14PN10994 RG78PN594 RD217 SD1 ED1 SN48; Registration District: Wangford; Sub District: Bungay; Enumeration District: 1; Parish of Bungay Benjamin REVELL, an Army Pensioner was living with Herbert George CLARKE a Coal Carter and his wife Alice Susannah CLARKE. Although on the "Household Transcription" it states just Bridge Street, Bungay, I notice on the original image that when Herbert Clarke signed the form, he has written "Bridge House", Bridge Street. At this point, I can't find a connection between the Clarkes and Benjamin Revell although he states his relationship as Grandfather. After his Army career, he was a publican in Beccles for many years. Thank you for your interest and I hope someone is able to assist. 3. Hi Mike Sorry but you are mistaken In the case of Ancestry a subscriber can enter one of the following for certain fields :- Transcription error Incorrect in image Nick Name Maiden name Name Change Variation Birth year and birth place fields All the above will be *included* in search returns *as well as* the original transcribed version Changes are usually added to the searchable index after two weeks or so If you find an entry with a small pencil symbol by it, that denotes a change or addition has been added, you will also see both the old and new versions in the search returns All of the above reasons are valid additions to the searchable index and may help another researcher identify the right person Where a subscriber enters a change or variation etc their Ancestry id is included which allows someone to make contact should they wish to do so, often the person making the change may also be researching the same line so may know more In the case of findmypast, you can enter a change to the transcript (which despite whats claimed are no better or worse than Ancestrys) the entry is vetted by FMP who either accept your findings and *change* the original transcript or tell you they do not accept your findings and nothing is done Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > You won't get a 'correction' included, because the transcription > accurately(?) > reflects what was written. 1. [SFK-UK] Wapling, Wopling, Wopun, WOPLIN - 1881 Census
    2. Eddie Tricker
    3. Hi Listers Many thanks to the following folks who replied very quickly to my request for assistance. Rod - for the image of the 1881 Census in question. Nivard Ovington - sorry to hear of all the bounce backs. Ruth, in Canberra - for all the details of all the Census returns she could find the family in, and last but not least of all, Dudley Diaper, for his interpretation of the listing. The 1881 Census image says the surname is WOPLIN, (don't know if it is possible to send a correction to FindMypast and/or Ancestry?) Werlesy, (but also looks like Werley) WOPLIN, [WOPLIN - there is a "dot" above the second last squiggle, which is the first part of the "N"., the first squiggle after the "L" is the "i") "She is certainly put down as Emma Woplin. He looks more like Werley but the writing isn't great - Lindsey is turned into Lyindsey. Frederick the baby, is also shown as 6 "Mts", which I have taken to mean 6 Months, (based upon his Birth Registration also). As Nivard Ovington said, "The enumerators writing is abysmal , ..". Again thanks to all, I have been able to run through another brick wall and proceed further with this family. For the benefit of other listers, and my wider family members on this list. Emma, is Emma FARTHING, daughter of Meshach Farthing and Eliza PARTRIDGE. Emma died during the quarter ending December 1898, in Billericay R.D., Essex. Westley WAPLING, AKA Wesley WOLPIN, etc, etc, went on to remarry to Elizabeth Cox, in the quarter ending December 1899, in West Ham R. R., Essex; and by 1911 Census had another three children by his second wife. It is also worth noting that the word, "LANC", short for "Lancaster" on the 1881 census, is not the Enumerator's hand but was added later by a second hand. This I know is an error, not being the correct place. Should have been ESSEX. regards to all eddie tricker

    3. Hi Desley If you have findmypast or have downloaded the 1911 image you will be able to see the enumerators summary (the RG78) page which includes your address Ancestry also have the RG78's Looking at that page you find the addresses around yours are Schedule 47 Scales Street - Private House - Mr C FLOWERS Schedule 48 Bridge Street - Private House - Mr H.G. CLARKE next is Trinity Street - Church ---- Schedule 49 Trinity Hall, Trinity Street - Private House Dr J L CURRIE? Schedule 50 The Roses, Staithe Road - Private School - Mrs HICKS The address Trinity Hall Bungay still exists the post code for same is NR35 1EX Or you can search for that address itself On googlemaps either will take you there, drag the little yellow man off the bar onto the point on the map noted and it will show you street view for the area Next to Trinity Hall on Staithes Road is a grey brick house which may be yours, it certainly looks to be old enough but looks can deceive at times Or it could be the nice red brick building on the other side of the Church but that is on Trinity Street Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Thank you Nivard for your comments about my posting regarding Bridge House > in Bridge Street, Bungay. You won't get a 'correction' included, because the transcription accurately(?) reflects what was written. However, it is possible, on Ancestry, to add an update which can be used to add your, personal information to the names. Note that you still won't get the updated name included in the index i.e. they'll still be 'missing'.
