    1. Re: [SFK-UK] Single or widowed?

    3. I would say not myself Where it states single, widowed etc, which is far from all registers in my experience, I would expect it to be as stated by that party (which is not necessarily the truth of course) It could be a mistake on the part of the scribe, registers were often written up later from notes Are there other entries in the same register stating widow or widower? 3. Hello Geoffrey, listers, Just one of many sad stories, too many to mention. 'Great' war only in its degree of magnitude, otherwise another terrible example of man's inhumanity to man. The Catchpoles of Suffolk, interesting people, but cannot add further to your account, although I sense you did not expect this - Remembrance day related. I was only to become aware of that name after a friend lent me the book 'The History of Margaret Catchpole', penned by a Suffolk Victorian vicar and author, Richard Cobbold. A fascinating saga part based on fact, but some narrative imaginatively enhanced to ensure its maximised appeal whilst Cobbold occasionally straying from the actual circumstances. He was born at Lidgate Hall (Suffolk) on the 24th of August 1888, the seventh child and second son of farmer Arthur Robert Catchpole (1856 – 1935) and his wife, Catherine Mary (née Pearl) (1852 –1935), and was baptised at St. Mary’s Church, Lidgate, on the 19th of October following. Tom, who was educated at Framlingham College and won prizes there, was destined to farm, too, but at the outbreak of the so-called ‘Great War’ he was called up to join H Company of the 5th (Territorial) Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. He was soon promoted to the rank of captain and was sent to the Middle East. It was there that he met his end fighting the Ottoman Turks. In the latter part of the third Battle of Gaza and in hand-to-hand fighting, a Turkish soldier thrust a pickaxe through Tom’s body and the terrible injury left him writhing in agony. Tom’s younger brother, Stanley Ernest (Stan) Catchpole (1890 – 1959), was also present. Another officer said to Stan, 'Turn your back, Catchpole.' The other officer then shot Tom - to put him out of his misery, there being no chance that he would live. He lies buried at Deir El Belah War Cemetery. I remember my father, Lt.Col. Gordon M. Wyant, who served in the RAMC in WWII and my uncle, Sgt. Edgar T. Wyant, who served in Italy with the 849th Signal Infantry Service, U.S. Army. I remember my grandfather's younger brother, Gefr. Arthur Weiss, 87th Reserve Infantry Regiment of Mainz, who was killed near Cernay-en-Dormois, France, on 15 May/1915 (Pesach) fighting for his country. Last month, I tried to find his grave in three immaculately kept German war cemeteries near Cernay-en-Dormois but could not. Each cemetery also had a plot holding between hundreds and thousands of unnamed German war dead from nearby battles of WWI. I can only assume he is resting in one of those. And I remember all the members of my extended family who perished in the Holocaust. Lest we forget. 1. [SFK-UK] Captain Thomas John (Tom) Catchpole
    2. Friday the 3rd of November, 2017, was the 100th anniversary of the death of my wife Sue’s great uncle, Captain Thomas John (Tom) Catchpole. Geoffrey Woollard.

Hello, Steve, if you want to ensure that your reply to a List post is seen by the original poster, please remember the difference between regular posts sent to the SUFFOLK List and posts that have been “gatewayed” from the SUFFOLK Board. Remember that most Board posters are NOT subscribed to the corresponding List. If the post in question begins with: “This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.” as this one did, then it has been “gatewayed”. PLEASE RE-READ the “Important Note” at the end of the “Message Board Post” text (below) that gave rise to your reply. If you are unsure of the difference or don’t know what to do, please contact me off-list at: mailto:SUFFOLK-admin@rootsweb.com . Thanks.
