    3. Thanks for your reply Ron. it all makes sense to me now. I was hoping that their might have been some additional information e.g. age at death and maybe a name of a parent or husband. I will later my burial date for Sudan accordingly. take care Liz > On 2 Jan 2018, at 10:57 PM, Roy Stockdill <roy.stockdill@btinternet.com> wrote: > > Findmypast has two entries for this burial, both at St Mary's. One entry has the burial on January 1st 1737 (from the parish registers) and the other is from the National Burial Index and shows it on January 1st 1738 - however, both refer to the same event and both are correct, it is simply a matter of how you cite it. > > Pre-calender changes,as mentioned by Nivard, refer to what happened in the year 1752 when Britain switched from the Julian Calendar, as laid down by Julius Caesar, to the Gregorian Calendar as approved by Pope Gregory XIII. This altered the end of the year from March 24 to December 31. Prior to 1752, dates between January 1 and March 24 were recorded as being still in the previous year which continued up to the latter date. After 1752 events were recorded according to the dating system as we know it today, but sometimes it isn't always easy to see which system has been used, hence your confusion. It's a question of whether a date has been "corrected" to confirm with the New Dating. > > The correct way to cite the burial of Susan Plampin as as follows: January 1st 1737/38, making it clear that the event occurred in 1738 according to New Dating. > > Roy Stockdill > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: SUFFOLK [mailto:suffolk-bounces+roy.stockdill=btinternet.com@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Liz Maxwell > Sent: 01 January 2018 21:45 > To: Suffolk > Subject: Re: [SFK-UK] Susan Plampin > > Hi Nivan, > > Thanks for your reply . 3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Gobbitt Surnames: ROWE Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: Hi Dawn County directories list the mistress at the National School in Wingfield (with an average attendance of 60 children in 1888 and 70 in 1900) as Miss Annie Rowe. She was named Anna Rowe when her death at the age of 41 was announced in the Ipswich Journal on 17 Nov. 1900. More details were published by the same newspaper a few weeks later (15 Dec.): WINGFIELD. The Parish School has sustained a severe loss by the death of Miss Anna Rowe, who for nearly fifteen years held the post of headmistress, and by the faithful and efficient discharge of her duties, as well as by her exemplary life, won the highest regard of the managers and of all who knew her. Her Majesty's Inspector, in his report, remarks:--"On the eve of writing a pleasant report to record creditable progress here, I was deeply pained to receive the sad news of the death of the mistress. The recollection of her self-denying and conscientious efforts to discharge her duties to the best of her abilty will long continue to operate as an incentive and example to all concerned in the best interests of these children." Wingfield School's archives at the Suffolk Record Office in Ipswich are catalogued online (https://www.suffolkarchives.co.uk/). I don't see a log book (which would have been written by the headmistress as a diary of her professional life) but there are school committee minutes 1878-1902 (FC84/M/1/3) and some annual reports of the School Inspector and other documents dated 1897-1901 (FC84/M/1/7). 1. Re: [SFK-UK] Susan Plampin
    2. Roy Stockdill
    3. Findmypast has two entries for this burial, both at St Mary's. 1. [SFK-UK] FreeCen Suffolk 1871 Project update
    2. Bev Howlett
    3. Hi I am writing to provide an update on the 1871 Suffolk FreeCen project. Another 2 pieces have been uploaded to the on line database and are now searchable for free on the main freecen site at http://www.freecen.org.uk These are pieces RG101753 Ipswich Ipswich St Lawrence, which covers the parishes of St Lawrence, St Mary Quay and St Clement RG101771 Wenhaston which covers the parishes of Holton, Wenhaston, Blyford, Westhall, Brampton, Sotherton, Uggeshall, Stoven, Wangford, Henham, Reydon Easton Bavents, Southwold. This means that there are now 119,454 (37.5%) 1871 Suffolk census records available to search free on line. Many thanks to all the volunteers who have given their time freely to help the project without their help this information would not be available. 3. Can anyone help me with my BULL family from the Flowton area circa 17th C. They owned BOSS Hall*. I have a 10xggfather Thomas Bull ( with children Mary /Anne/Jane and Anthony all born circa 1610-20). Thomas's ancestors were a Roger Bull with brother Anthony and a few John Bulls with earlier marriages to BLOSS and FAWSON. Hoping someone has a tie to this family and can help me straighten out the generations and marriages. *Edw de Bordeshawe had resided at Boss Hall during the reign of Henry II (1216-72) It passed through a number of hands until 1545 when John Bull bought it from John Spring. Later vested in Thomas Bull , then John Bull and after him Anthony Bull ,who rebuilt the dwelling in the late 1500s. Anthony's widow Elizabeth ( Lambe) left it to her nephew Thomas Bull , the father of Mary Vesey(nee Bull) . They did not live at Boss Hall but owned the land. From her it passed eventually to her grandson Thomas Vesey whose daughter Elizabeth & then the granddaughter Elizabeth Broke (nee Beaumont ) inherited it after her mother's death in 1791. She eventually sold Boss Hall to Thomas Kersey of Whitton in 1821 for £5000 Boss Hall was destroyed in 1982. While digging for a further building in 1990 an ancient Anglo Saxon grave site was found, one of them being the grave of a noble woman. David Vesey Toronto Canada

    3. To try to solve a problem, does anyone have access to Wattisfield registers for a marriage of James Sallet/Sillett to Anne Pet in 1707 at Wattisfield. I took this from Boyds Marriage Index but I have my doubts about the detail and would appreciate confirmation. Brian Sillett

I have one in from the mid 18th century in Bruisyard, where the banns state widow and the marriage entry shows single woman> Karen Stewart -----Original Message----- From: SUFFOLK [mailto:suffolk-bounces+stewarte=tpg.com.au@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Brian Sillett Sent: Monday, 4 December 2017 6:27 PM To: suffolk@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SFK-UK] Single or widowed? Thanks Nivard. It looks as if I have wrongly assigned bits of notes about marriages in cut and paste episodes (stupid boy!) I rather suspect that might be the case in other half remembered instances and when I come across another case, I will be more careful. 3. This is the kind of clerical error that crops up from time to time They often wrote up the registers long after the events But even on the day mistakes occurred Wherever humans get involved there is plenty of scope for cock ups Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 04-Dec-17 7:25 PM, Karen & Ed Stewart wrote: > I have one in from the mid 18th century in Bruisyard, where the banns state > widow and the marriage entry shows single woman> > > Karen Stewart >

I would say not myself Where it states single, widowed etc, which is far from all registers in my experience, I would expect it to be as stated by that party (which is not necessarily the truth of course) It could be a mistake on the part of the scribe, registers were often written up later from notes Are there other entries in the same register stating widow or widower?
