1. [SFK-UK] Finningham Silletts
2. Brian Sillett
3. I have a record from 2 sources giving a baptism for Henry SILLETT 13 June 1769 at Finningham, son of Henry and Sarah but try as I might, I cannot find the marriage around that date for Henry/Sarah in Finningham or elsewhere. Is anyone aware of gaps in Finningham records? Brian Sillett Lancashire

1. [SFK-UK] Suffolk 1871 FreeCen Project Update
2. Bev Howlett
3. I am writing to provide an update on the 1871 Suffolk FreeCen project. Another 2 pieces have been uploaded to the on line database and are now searchable for free on the main freecen site at http://www.freecen.org.uk These are pieces RG101733 Stowmarket which covers the parishes of Great Finborough, Combs, Little Finborough, Harleston, Haughley, Dagworth, Old Newton, Stowmarket, Gipping, Creeting St Peter, Stowupland RG101738 Eye which covers the parishes of Stuston, Thornham Magna, Thornham Parva, Thrandeston, Yaxley, Stoke Ash, Thorndon All Saints, Occold Redlingfield This means that there are now 131,845 (41.7%) 1871 Suffolk census records available to search free on line. Many thanks to all the volunteers who have given their time freely to help the project without their help this information would not be available. There is still much to be done and if you would like to help please contact me on bandys@worldonline.co.uk I still have plenty of 1871 areas available for transcription so if you fancy having a go please contact me. The information is available in digital format and can be sent via email. -- Bev Howlett FreeCen Co-Ordinator Norfolk 1861,1871,1891 Suffolk 1841, 1871, 1891 Cambridge 1861, 1891 Surrey 1871,1891 Find Out How To Help http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/bevsnorfolkinfo/ http://www.freecen.org.uk

3. Thank you for checking David. I appreciate it. I did know about Charlotte and yes she was born in Nacton Workhouse, as well as being baptised there. I did also realise after I sent the message that I'd typed Aleppo wrong, lol. Thanks for picking that up though. So I guess, unless they are listed in the BT's, Isabella and Aleppo may not have been baptised. Which is kind of strange seeing as all the others were. Anyway thanks for the help. Charlotte, of Charles and Sarah Scarlet (not Scarlett) baptised in Nacton on 2Jan1854. Looks like they were in the workhouse as their abode was Nacton House (house of industry I think). 3. Hi, I am trying to find details of a trial for Manslaughter in 1978/79 in Suffolk. Suffolk Constabulary only have the briefest of details. It started at Mildenhall magistrates, but that has closed, as has Sudbury that it was subsumed into. Ipswich Crown Court does not have any records that far back, I presume Bury St Edmunds would have been transferred to Ipswich when it closed. The Crown Prosecution Service has destroyed their data three months after the trial. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can go from here ? Don Farnham

3. Hi Paula There is nothing in the Colneis & Samford Deaneries 1813-1900 for those two. They don't appear in the other deaneries of Suffolk either (that are currently released by SFHS). I did find their sister though? Charlotte, of Charles and Sarah Scarlet (not Scarlett) baptised in Nacton on 2Jan1854. Looks like they were in the workhouse as their abode was Nacton House (house of industry I think). Incidentally, according to the GRO, Alippo is actually spelt Aleppo), mother's maiden name is Podd. 1. [SFK-UK] Dating photographs from the studios of James W. Howard in Ipswich

3. [1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Gobbitt Surnames: HOWARD, BOUGHTON, Cooper, Culley, Faherty, Fisk, Heawood, Holmes, King, Tear, Teasdell Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: Having recently learned that the Howard family's ledgers and negatives were destroyed about three years ago, I feel the need for some alternative means of dating the numbered prints produced in their Ipswich studios since the 1920s. My few dated portraits and notes from directories will become more helpful if further examples are kindly submitted by other contributors. The photographer James William Howard was born at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in 1882. He was the son of a butcher, William Henry Howard (1842-1916), and Amelia née Teasdell (c.1847-1901), whose graves are in Lowestoft cemetery (http://apps.eastsuffolk.gov.uk/pages/cemeteries/Lowestoft/harper_hylto n.aspx). Lowestoft's census returns of both 1901 and 1911 show that James was employed as a photographer. He seems to have had his own business by 1912, being listed in Kelly's directory of Suffolk at Kendal(l) Road, Kirkley, in the borough of Lowestoft. After his marriage at Ipswich in 1914 he is absent from the next two county directories, published in 1916 and 1922. He reappears in 1925 at 25 Westgate Street, Ipswich, where Robert (Thomas) Boughton had been operating since 1914 (if not before) until the early 1920s. Although James William Howard died in 1938, his studio at 25 Westgate Street was carried on under the name of James W. Howard by his second wife, Margaret Emma née King (1913-1989), and his son, Ipswich-born Kenneth James Howard (1920-1988), whose mother was Ida Amelia née Heawood (1887-1937). According to widespread press reports (e.g. by Gloucester's The Citizen, 28 Sept. 1938, in which 62-year-old James is described as a well-known Ipswich photographer), Margaret was widowed at the age of 25, just two weeks after her wedding. She married Bernard Thomas Faherty (1914-1988) in 1949 and subsequently lived in Weybridge, Surrey, presumably leaving Kenneth in charge of the firm. The 1941 edition of Kelly's Ipswich street directory (the 39th) is the last to list the Howards' premises at 25 Westgate Street. By 1943 (the 40th edition) they are closer to the Cornhill, at 5 Westgate Street, which had been vacated c.1938 by the relocation of the Adolphus Tear studio to The Walk (http://photo-sleuth.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/derby-photographers-leonard -norman.html?showComment=1515590235992#c5394481092686265263). A few years later there is a change of name, from James W. Howard up to 1949 (42nd ed.) to James W. Howard Ltd in 1952 (43rd ed.). An advertisement in 1954 (44th ed., p. 759) proclaims James W. Howard Ltd to be "Established for over 30 Years". The 1956 directory (45th ed., p. 779) advertises a new company, Fisk & Howard Ltd, trading as two distinct entities called Tudor Photos and Howard's Studio, both at 8 Crown Street (where Tudor Photos had been since about 1940). Tudor Photos are still at Crown Street in 1958 (46th ed.) while K. J. Howard mentions his I.B.P. and City & Guilds qualifications in a separate entry for Howard's Studio at 6 Friars Street (p. 748). There it remains in all of Kelly's later Ipswich directories, up to 1975 (the final edition). My mother's aunts were thoughtful enough to write dates on the backs of their portraits in the 1930s: 58976.D by James W. Howard (late Boughton's) was dated 1 Aug. 1931 (the wedding day of Dorothy Kate Holmes and Walter Alfred Culley) 71146 by James W. Howard and Son was dated November 1939 by Georgina Eileen Cooper Just over 12,000 serial numbers were assigned during the intervening eight years, an average of about 1,500 per annum or 125 per month. This calculation ignores the economic depression in that era and the growing ranks of amateur photographers potentially taking business away from professional studios. If those factors make it more realistic to estimate annual quantities closer to 2,000 at the start of the decade and 1,000 at the end, a print numbered 65000 would have been created before 1935. But perhaps numbers remained relatively low until the prospect of war brought a host of military personnel and other customers to the studio in 1939. That could explain why a figure no higher than 65782 was allocated for what looks like a special wedding anniversary portrait of my great-grandparents, George and Eliza Cooper (m. October 1898), unless the occasion was George's 70th birthday in September 1936. A photograph of my grandmother by Boughtons of Ipswich, apparently taken c.1920, was numbered 32742, indicating that James W. Howard continued the series used by his predecessor at 25 Westgate Street. It may have commenced elsewhere; Walter Boughton & Sons of Lowestoft had a studio in Ipswich (at 24 Butter Market) as early as 1900 (http://www.early-photographers.org.uk/Suf A-B.html). I hope this rather sketchy outline will attract more images or information to fill in the gaps and extend its usefulness. Author: avidt2 Surnames: COOPER PAWSEY Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: I have a rather strange puzzle and would appreciate any advice. I have a John Cooper born in Hundon Suffolk who marred an Elizabeth Pawsey in 1771 in Stansfield. The problem I have is that both John and Elizabeth were baptised in Hundon, only there were 2 John Cooper's one born in 1749 to William & Sarah and the other born the same year 1744 as Elizabeth, whose parents were William and Mary Cooper, so thy would have grown up together in what is still a small village. The second part of the problem is that Elizabeth's parents were Joseph Pawsey and Ann Cooper who married 4 months before Elizabeth was born. I now have an Ann born c1725, a Wiiliam & Mary Cooper, who only had the one child baptised in Hundon and i cant find where either of the Cooper families came from. Any help would be much appreciated. Kind Regards David Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Have contacted Suffolk local history group about Stansfield Hall, but had no replies. The will of John Cocksedge is at the Suffolk archives, if you go to their web site - the hold- you can obtain copies, although some are too fragile to be handled for copying. 1. [SFK-UK] FreeCen Project Update 1871 Suffolk
2. Bev Howlett
3. Hi I am writing to provide an update on the 1871 Suffolk FreeCen project. Another piece has been uploaded to the on line database and is now searchable for free on the main freecen site at http://www.freecen.org.uk This is piece RG101776 Beccles, which covers the parish of Beccles This means that there are now 124,298 (38.9%) 1871 Suffolk census records available to search free on line.
