Hello there I have a Henry FAIRES/FAYERS born 1807 Nayland Suffolk married Jane WEBB 11 Mar 1835 St Mary Maglene Church, Bildeston, Suffolk died 13 Dec 1877. Have we a connection at all? Yours in hope Jenny in Oz
Hi Jan Despite Ancestry's strange reference to the Hearth Tax, the "Sudbury - Marriage Licences" collection, as indicated by Mel and Ian a couple of days ago, relates to the Harleian Society's transcripts of allegations for marriage licences from the Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury (see also https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Suffolk_Church_Records). If the archdeaconry court's licence was accepted at St James's church (where the ROCKET - HESTER wedding took place on 6 Aug. 1805, according to the Suffolk FHS index for Thingoe Deanery) there would be no point in going to the trouble and expense of applying to the Norwich Consistory Court (NCC) for an additional licence. Other than signatures, the original allegation (at the Suffolk Record Office in Bury St Edmunds) probably gives no more useful details than the transcript. I think the closest you'll get to finding an image of the original document online is the list of FHL film numbers at https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/show?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fcatalog-search-api%3A8080%2Fwww-catalogapi-webservice%2Fitem%2F648586. Since Serjeant Michael ROCKET lived in Kent and not in the Diocese of Norwich like his bride, we might expect the licence to have been issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury. But in practice this "rule" was frequently ignored by both the local Suffolk courts and the NCC. Conversely, many couples from a single archdeaconry in Suffolk or Norfolk obtained NCC licences, perhaps because it was more convenient to go to nearby surrogates. If you are still ploughing through the images of NCC bonds or allegations for the other marriage, it may be wise to check the FamilySearch.org database for a few of the more legible documents from the period in question to see whether they have been indexed. Some of the results give bond numbers that can help to locate the original images. Unfortunately, the indexing is incomplete and there seems to be no easy way to gauge the coverage. For example, I've discovered that the second half of the 956 NCC images filed in 1783-1784 are missing from the database. Having begun to index them myself, I feel less inclined to moan about such shortcomings, and all the more appreciative of the countless hours of effort already invested in this huge project. My comparatively small index is unlikely to be completed for some while yet, not least because I've also been working on a revision of the guidance notes at https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/England_Norfolk_Marriage_Bonds_%28FamilySearch_Historical_Records%29, which currently leave a lot to be desired. Watch this space... David Date: Thu, 07 Jun 2012 16:41:55 +0100 From: Jan Rockett <[email protected]> Many Thanks for the information. I am ploughing through marriage bonds for another marriage by licence and when I have finished I shall try and find this one. I have found some Suffolk bonds in the Norwich Consistory Court records, can I assume this one may be there too?
Hello - I have checked what you have in the parish register microfiches I have for Melton, and can confirm this - but no other children that I can see, up to 1784. Hope this helps a little Stella :-) On 8 Jun 2012, at 21:19, Anne & Des Gentleman wrote: > Dear Listers, > Can anyone help New Zealander and a Canadian with a need for a look up > in the Parish Register for Melton Please? Dear Listers, Can anyone help New Zealander and a Canadian with a need for a look up in the Parish Register for Melton Please? Or put us onto a way of looking them up ourselves? We are looking for the family ROBERT AND SARAH CHILVERS who had a son WILLIAM 1st Oct 1775. They had two other possible children we know of MARY bapt 6 Nov 1774, died 9th Nov 1774 and ELIZABETH bapt 22 March 1778 What we need to know is _are their any other children registered to these parents please._ Do hope you can help us. Sincerely Anne Gentleman, nee Chilvers, searching for LEATHERS CHILVERS, DENNY/DENNEY JEFFERSON AND BUTLER and Jonathon Chilvers searching for CHILVERS
Thank you to all who responded re FAIERS, unfortunately I haven't been able to connect with any. Here is a summary of my FAIERS and hopefully one of you might see a connection that I can't. My Great Great Grandmother was Frances Anna FAIERS born Claydon 1845, died Ipswich 1907, daughter of; Susannah MANNING and Henry FAIRS born Gosbeck 1820, died Ipswich 1854, other children: Charles FAIERS 1847 Claydon and Emma FAIERS 1849 Barham. Parents of Henry were: Mary WELLS born 1785 and William FAIRS 1784 Framsden, other children: Lucy 1813, William 1815, Mary 1817, Charles 1822, George 1824, Eliza 1827 and Emma 1829, almost certain all born Gosbeck. Parents of William were Mary and Samuel FAIRS, other children: Anne 1777, Mary 1779, Susan 1781, all born Framsden. That's it, I'm afraid, it's as far as I have been able to go and am more than happy to stand corrected, if someone else wants to own them. I must admit I'm a bit shaky on this line, there seems to be a lot of FAIERS, FAYERS AND FAIRS out there but I haven't made any connections. Kind regards Janine
Mike, brilliant! I think we should always do this unless there is a really specific reason not to broadcast. David Thank you very much for teh information about the book, I will order it when I am back in the uk. Regards Simon ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Scott" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, June 05, 2012 7:50 AM Subject: [SFK-UK] Smith of Kirkley Simon, I wonder whether the following book might give you any information about your relative Smith. The book is by Malcolm R. White, and on his website it says:- Lowestoft Corporation Transport. Lowestoft Corporation Transport. Bygone Town Scenes. Much in demand by transport enthusiasts, local historians and residents, Lowestoft Corporation Transport details the history of municipal public transport in Lowestoft, from the introduction of the tramway services in 1903, until 1977, when whilst under the control of Waveney District Council, the bus services were transferred to the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company (now First Group), resulting in the council bus fleet and the support vehicle being sold. This is the first book to be published covering this small and fascinating transport undertaking, and will appeal to anyone interested in old Lowestoft, since there are many views showing vehicles, scenes and locations. Of special interest are the photographs of many fine vehicles with bodywork built in the town by the well known Eastern Coach Works, a quality bus and coach builder unfortunately no longer with us. Many images of trams supplement the large number of quality photographs of town buses at work. In addition to the seven maps included in the book, examples of tickets, adverts, official forms and other items relating to this much loved undertaking are to be found in Lowestoft Corporation Transport. A number of former Lowestoft Corporation and Waveney District Council transport undertaking employees and highly respected nationally known people specialising in the history of public road transport undertakings have assisted in the preparation of this publication. 2003 was the one hundredth anniversary of the start of public municipal transport in the town, and this title commemorated that fact.
