    3. Nick, I would for sure that Alfreda J BOAR, that married Robert F S RAFFE in the March Qtr 1911 Ipswich is the one your looking for, as there was a BOAR in the 1911 census and there is a death of Alfreda Josephine RAFFE b abt 1887 that died Dec Qtr of 1969 Ipswich. 3. Hello list I have just found a listing for my 4xG Grandfather James FRISTON in the 1839 UK Poll Books and Electoral Registers under the heading of CLERGY, GENTRY & YEOMANRY. James FRISTON was a blacksmith living in Albion Street, St Clement, Ipswich on the 1841 Census and from various other BMD certificates he is intermittently listed as an engineer. Could someone explain to me the classification of Clergy, Gentry and Yeomanry, in particular Yeomanry and how it might relate to James FRISTON on this occasion. I have googled but would value the lists knowledge and experience on this. With thanks and kind regards as always Janine Fisher

Hi all I am new to the list and would be grateful if someone could look for a baptism in Lowestoft for Alice May COX born December Quarter 1898 as I would like to know who her mother/father is. I think her father was Arthur FREEZER aka FRAZER. In the 1901 Census she is with Francis FREEZER (FRAZER) at 9 Selby Street, Lowestoft aged 1. In the 1911 Census she is Alice May FRAZER aged 12 at The Street, Scole, Diss, Norfolk with her Grandfather Francis. Many thanks for your help with this. 3. Hello David, Coincidently I was in Norwich today and I came across a computer index "Suffolk people in NCC bonds 1754-1802" so I thought this might halp me find the marriage of William and Mary SHERMAN of Occold (known children Mary chr 1773 and Maria chr 1780 so marriage likely to be just prior to these dates) I found reference to six licence bonds SHERMAN - ARNOLD ref MLB 64 SHERMAN - CHASTON ref MLB 82 SHERMAN - CHENERY ref MLB 114 SHERMAN - DOWSON ref MLB 86 SHERMAN - ORLIBAR ref MLB 71 SHERMAN - SPOONER ref MLB 89 I assume that the second marriage refers to that of George SHERMAN and Sarah CHASTON at Rickinghall Inferior on 22nd January 1770, and the third marriage relates either to John Cheston SHERMAN to Mary CHENERY at Brandeston on 10th November 1788 or to that of Sarah SHERMAN to Thomas CHENERY at Occold on 26th October 1795 (I assume more likely the former as I'd assume it is the groom's name that comes first, but I am at a loss to understand the reference. I believe George who married in 1770 was William's brother and the 1788 and 1795 marriages were those of his nephews and nieces, so it seems a good bet that the one of the other marriage could be the one that I am looking for if only I can identify the relevant marriages. No year is given in the print out so I wondered whether the higher the number the closer to 1802. As I knew about the 1770 marriage already I looked up Licence 82 in the fiche for 1770 was it was not that of George and Sarah. Any ideas? 1. [SFK-UK] Norfolk (and Suffolk) marriage licence records - new guide
    2. David Gobbitt
    3. The FamilySearch Research Wiki article on Norfolk marriage licence bonds and allegations (https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/England_Norfolk_Marriage_Bonds_%28FamilySearch_Historical_Records%29) has been substantially revised. The new edition gives more background information and guidance to help researchers locate images online or on microfilm. Many couples living in Suffolk obtained marriage licences from Norwich Consistory Court (NCC) surrogates, so this is a valuable resource for both counties. Most of the NCC bundles from 1695 to 1751 contain at least a partial index of grooms, except for bonds or allegations filed in 1699-1702, 1707-1715, 1721 and 1746-1748, according to the Norfolk Record Office online catalogue (NROCAT - ref. DN/MLB). I'm less familiar with the other courts but NROCAT suggests that similar indexes have been filmed with the Archdeaconry of Norfolk bundles (NRO ref. ANF 12) from 1704 to 1785 (except for 1712-1727, the 1712-1714 documents being missing and the 1721-1727 index "unfit for production") and from 1842 to 1848. Has anyone found such contemporary indexes in other bundles or with the records of Norwich Archdeaconry (NRO ref. ANW 24)? It would also be particularly useful to know exactly which years or bundles have been wholly or partly indexed in the FamilySearch.org database, for each of the courts. I hope someone has this information or the time to ascertain it. Wiki contributors can click on the "Discussion" link in the article's sidebar to read my recent exchanges with FamilySearch advisers on the "Talk" page. David Gobbitt

They had 5 children, William (Born 1822), George (Born 1826), Lucy (Born 1828), Susan (Born 1830),and Henry (Born 1831). Susan Jolly nee Fenn died and was buried at St Michael's, Cookley, Suffolk on 12/11/1832. Geroge re-married to Emma Nunn at St Mary's Church, Huntingfield, Suffolk. on the GRO marriage certificate it states his father was Charles Pipe. By pure luck I found that a Charles Pipe had 2 base born children by Amy Jolly in Brundish John (baptised 10/12/1797) and Harriot (baptised 1/2/1801), but can not find any record for a George Jolly in Brundish. Amy was buried on 23/4/1801 in Brundish. Have checked census's as well. 1841. Does not give place of birth, but says lived in Huntingfield. No record in Parish records. 1851. Says was born in Rendham, Suffolk. No details in Parish records. 1861. Says born in Brundish, Suffolk. No details in parish records. George died on 8/9/1864 in Huntingfield, Suffolk aged 66. This would put his birth year about 1798, But where? >From you records of Suffolk can you please help. -------------------------------------------------- George Jolly, Suffolk, England Born about 1798. Sarah died 1858 she is alone on the 1851 census and says she is a widow. I also have found a reference to the death of Isaac Sadler JOHNSON late of Mile End who died in Sept 6th 1837, Aged 58 and a reference to him born Feb 24th 1802 and his death on July 25th 1868. A reference to him is made in the Whytes Directory in 1863 and also he is found on the 1861 aged 69 with a wife Eliza. His father was William Johnson of Higham whose wife was called Rebekkha. It's on the other side of London, beyond Croydon, between Epsom and Reigate. I'm sure they could have found plenty of pedestrians to harass in their own county. Estate agent Harrie STACEY, whose surname is visible in this picture, was listed at Station Approach, Tadworth, in Kelly's 1913 directory of Surrey (p. 284, under Kingswood). The back of the postcard states that Moore's Studio at 61 Denmark Hill, Camberwell, [London] S.E. had been established for 14 years. George S. MOORE, who was at that address by 1904 (Kelly's P.O. London County Suburbs Directory, part 1, p. 126), was described as a photographer in the 1901 census, working on his own account at home (living at 210 Southampton Street, Camberwell, with his parents, who were apparently not involved in his business). George was not among the photographers listed in Kelly's London Suburban Directory for 1901 but he may have had some kind of studio even before then. (His brother John, three years younger than him, was working as a butcher at the age of 16 in 1901.) That doesn't reveal much more than the photograph itself about the date, which must have been between c.1909 (when the khaki uniforms were issued) and September 1915 (when my great-grandfather and his comrades in the 1/1st Suffolk Yeomanry left their horses at home and embarked for Gallipoli from Liverpool). Three of the four riders in the third photograph have a new style of webbing bandolier, while one has an older type with a flap and three leather fasteners. The other side of each postcard is identical, with the words "For Inland Postage Only this Space may now be used for Communication" (rarely specified after 1905 and never before the divided back was authorized in 1902). I believe this one is a little earlier, perhaps taken at Grantchester Meadows, near Cambridge, in May 1911. The second photo shows men and horses being inspected, possibly at the same training camp. In the background on the left is the gable end of a building with white boards near the roof. This looks very similar to the buildings behind my great-grandfather, Corporal Henry Moyse GOBBITT, in the third photo (numbered 307 or 397), probably also at Grantchester in 1911. The buildings in the first of these photographs are clearly among those visible beyond the tents in the photo of a religious service (probably at Ipswich in 1914) posted last year (28 Mar 2011 5:11PM GMT, second image). I don't know the exact location of the 1914 training camp. In 1910 the site was Bixley Heath, not far from St Clement's Hospital, in eastern Ipswich. 2. Possibly the same man again. I'm not so sure about the horse, nor the date and place. 3 (numbered 89). I understand that the badge on this young man's arm identifies him as a 1st Class Army Scout. 4 (numbered 110). Two privates, and unfortunately two black ink marks in the sky. 5 (faintly numbered 147?). No rifle, but an empty butt bucket on a rather distinctive horse. And a rider.
