The Australian National Archives article provides an excellent overview of Australian Immigration Policy here; [1]http://tinyurl.com/7vksumk The succeeding pages, accessible via the navigation bar at the left of the window, deal more specifically with child migration. Whilst the aim of many of the various assisted passage schemes was to attract labourers for farm work, some promised land for the immigrant to farm for himself. Notable among the latter was Western Australia's 'Group Settlement Scheme' where between 1922 and 1929 assisted passage was provided to families who were also granted an area of virgin bushland of typically between 150 and 200 acres and provided with a house, basic equipment and livestock (a cow and perhaps a pig), on a low-interest loan basis. Also provided, to be shared between up to five adjacent group members, was larger equipment such as a cart, harness, plough, harrow, etc. The expectation was that the loans would be repaid by installments over a number of years as farms became productive. The settlers were formed into 'Groups' of some twelve or so adjacent properties where the group members were expected to assist each other in erecting the houses, clearing the land, ploughing, harvesting and other essential chores under the guidance and instruction of a group foreman appointed for the purpose. In the event, some of the land granted was not suitable and many settlers, unable to make a living from it just walked off the land and either found employment in Australia or made their way back to the U.K. Geo. Apologies Terri, It's the Suffolk Record Office and as there are three branches you may well also see SROI (SRO in Ipswich), SROB (SRO in Bury St Edmunds) and SROL (SRO in Lowestoft). You can find more here http://www.suffolk.gov.uk/sro/ Census returns and parish records are available to search at all three branches, but records pertaining to particular villages will generally be housed in the nearest branch. My research consisted mostly of church records for the various parishes in England. There were many areas to search as I recall and no definitive way to prove the lineage when going back just so far. Also, you would need to check the LDS microfilm catalogue to find out what films are available. Or write to the area of interest in England. Some other reasons you might not find anything before 1580 would be the plague that took so many lives. Or a name change or variation if a family actually moved from another area. For instance, many French Hugenots moved to England and their surname was changed. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Help please! Frank Clarke d. 1980 Ipswich aged about 87. What you need to trace is a baptism, providing one took place, in a Parish Register or a non conformist church or chapel if her parents were not Church of England. This should give her parents names and sometimes a date of birth. If as you say she came from Middleton then that is the place to start, if not try other surrounding parishes. Middleton registers do not seem to have been extracted onto the IGI and I cannot see them free online. Someone may answer who has a copy or a transcript of them, though the originals will probably be held and available to view, by the Suffolk Records Office either at Ipswich or Lowestoft. I suggest that you contact the Suffolk Family History Society who may have transcripts for sale or alternatively may have a member who is searching the same family. Looking at their site I can see that they have a number of members posting an interest in the Newsome family, although none specifically quote Middleton they do include nearby parishes. These may be nearby parishes but could in fact be anywhere. All you can do is obtain copies or transcripts of Parish Registers or visit the Suffolk Record Office in Bury St Edmunds to see if you can trace a possible marriage and susequently baptisms. There were no proofs of birth available prior to general registration which began in 1837. I have transcriptions for the nearby parishes of Wordwell and Ingham and I cannot see a marriage or any Willingham baptisms at either, other nearby parishes are Culford, Lackford, Flempton Hengrave, Fornham, Brockley and you could include any of the parishes in the Thingoe district or Bury St Edmunds area. You could also contact the Suffolk FHS at http://www.suffolkfhs.co.uk/ to see if any of their members have interests in the Willingham family. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Willingham This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Hi Everyone, Hummmm. The move to Lancashire would have slipped by unnoticed by me if two children had not been born between the census. could this be the reason my grandmother and her sister were born in Lancs. and not in Ipswich? The marriage of my great grandparents, John Brett & Naomi Fulcher: 1875 4th quarter, Ipswich, vol. 4a 1324 The children: i. EDITH MAY6 BRETT, b. 26 Dec 1877, Whitworth, Lancs. ii. ELLEN CHARLOTTE BRETT, (grandmother) b. 26 Aug 1879, Halliwell Lancs. 1881 John Brett was living with his wife and two daughters at Cauldwell Hall Buildings, Ipswich. He was described as a carpenter. Interesting to note that early in the 20th century after the birth of my father (their 2nd child) my grandparents migrated to Canada. Grandma's sister married and migrated to s. Africa. Would the Brett move to Lancashire be the result of this same offer. Any thoughts about work for a carpenter in Lancs.? Thanks, Linda B.C. Canada
The expert on this is Clive Paine, as far as I remember people who were receiving help from the local poor houses in Suffolk were offered the chance to go north. They would only take family members of working age, so anyone under the age of 12 was left behind with other family/friends. Once the families were established, or as the children attained the age of 12, they joined their parents. This scheme only ran for a couple of years although some records are still available at the SRO. Good morning I have a family of Harringtons who migrated to Lancashire (not as drastic as Australia) in the late 19th C, 1871-72. The youngsters found work in the Iron and Textile industries. I have heard that travel from Suffolk to Lancashire by canal boat was offered as an inducement. Does anyone know how such families were recruited? Did local newspapers carry advertisements?
