    1. [SFK-UK] J.M.W. Turner, the painter
    2. Brenda
    3. My grandmother, who was born a MORLING and married a COLEMAN (both with Suffolk roots), told me that one of our distant cousins was J.M.W. Turner, the painter. I can find no record of Turner having lived in Suffolk, Constable would have been more likely! Is this just a family legend or could it be based on truth? The only Turner ancestor I have so far found is Elizabeth TURNER, (1788 - 1858) born in Nayland who married George ELLENGER (1791 - 1856), born in Great Glemham. My grandmothers' mother was born an Ellenger. This posting is just on the off chance that someone can throw some light on this. Thank you. Brenda Stables

My Ancestor John Bentley b.1828 was one of 6 children born to James born around 1799/1801 and Elizabeth (nee Turner) born around the same time. The other children were Mary b.1827 (she was blind and never married to my knowledge) Emily born c.1831, Susan born circa 1833, George b. 1835 and Jemima b. 1838. I have had success tracking George and Jemima and their decendants, but Susan seems to have vanished from any census from about 18 years of age and my info on Emily is patchy too. However the 1851 and 1861 census records for Edward Hines in Mellis, despite him having 12 children, do not record him having a daughter named Sarah. I have ruled out his female children born around the same date, just in case she preferred to use a middle name. I have just applied to see if I can get her birth certificate. 1. [SFK-UK] FARROW/FARRAR alias OXFORD(E)
    2. Giles Colchester
    3. By the time of the hearth taxes between about 1664 and 1674, the name Farrow, Farrowe, Farrow, Farro, Faro, Farrar, Farrer, Ferrer, Phare, Pharo, Pharow, Pharrow, Pharrowe and probably a few other spellings, were all used relatively interchangeably. Given that dictionaries had not been invented at the date, and didn't become reasonably distributed until about 1900, all spellings at this date should be regarded as phonetic and in the local accent. With the result that when someone came from out of the county, they didn't always understand the accent, which would introduce further errors. Examples of these are a spelling of Faragon, Forrow, Fullow and Paroe, or else the constable couldn't read his own writing when making a transcription. And then there are also abbreviations, of which I have picked up two in the hearth tax of Ferr and Frow. Probably when the constable was doing his rounds he wrote down Ferr' or F'row, and forgot to expand it when he wrote down his final list. I could spot few Oxfords in the list, and none that I thought were Farrows. One of the Oxfords, is probably a misrecorded Orford or vice versa. I have put below my sign off the various entries I can spot for Farrow in its various spellings in the Hearth taxes. If you want the full details of the individual entries, how many hearths they paid tax on, which villages they were in, and sometimes their trades or other information then follow the following link http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/suffolk/2007-08/1186937880 and then email me off list. 3. Hi I have just noticed the pointer to some Sfk Indices, which includes the parish of Woolpit, in which there are some references to FARROW or FARRAR alias OXFORD(E) between 1595 to 1638. My oldest ancestor is a Thomas FERRAR alias OXFORD(/OXFORTH) bn c. 1535 in the nearby Bury St Edmunds, later ordained as a catholic cleric and then again as a protestant, finishing up in the parish of Langham near Colchester where he left a will in 1606. In this he wished to be buried between ‘my two wives’ but only refers to the 2nd by inference. He also mentions a ‘brother’ George FARRER a cleric of Flowton, Sfk Does anyone know of any other FARRER/OXFORD references in this period – or why they might have used the dual surnames ? I had wondered if his 1st wife had been a FERRAR and he took her surname for inheritance reasons, or maybe to distance himself from his catholic origins, but now think there may have been an earlier reason for a family line with these names. I do know that in East Anglia the FERRAR etc surname links back to the 1066 era as De FERROUR. So maybe there is an equivalent OXFORDE line and the above Thomas & George have ancestors from both lines. TIA John E FARROW

    3. Hi, John: I believe that people generally used an alias when for some reason they adopted another name, perhaps for inheritance purposes, or when there was an out-of-wedlock birth. Regarding the name of Farrow, the given name Pharaoh (yes like the Egyptians!) has run in my family for almost four hundred years. I believe that at first the name was Farrow (or Farrar), and that my immigrant ancestors as puritans and dissidents went to the Old Testament for the spelling.
