    3. Hi Brenda, I have a transcript of baptisms for Chelsworth and the only Susannah Lister that was baptised around this time that I can see is the following: 1 Dec 1809 Susannah Lister, dau of Thomas & Jemima, late Marsh Although, I think there maybe some major errors in this transcript I have, it was sent to me by someone else and looking at the IGI I have discovered some discrepancies with this entry. On the IGI it states she was baptised the 9 Nov 1809 and born 15 Nov 1808 and that her mother's maiden name was Peacock. So as I said I don't think this transcript I have is very accurate. I'm sorry after all of that, that I couldn't be of more help. If you would like me to send you the entries for Lister I have then let me know, but as I said I'm not sure that the data is entirely accurate. 3. Welcome back, Michael ! Hope you are well and raring to go, now :) It sounds like you have the inspiration, at least ;) I remember your story. I too, still around, but haven't done much on the family tree, as I was stuck in every direction ... until recently I have eventually got the proof I needed to prove my gggrandfather was one and the same as a NOTTS born lad, and came to Australia as a Convict. My first Convict !!! Only took me 36 years to find him, but at the "instinct point" in about 1997 I followed this guy form Notts back to the 1400s, and now I know it IS my family, not "I'll trace it just in case ..." So ... moral of the story .... NEVER give up ! I have also just recently been aided by some lovely Suffolk Listers, Patricia BRIDGES, Carolyn BOON and Helen CATCHPOLE (there is that name again, Michael) and they have enabled me to get a break on my Suffolk ancestry again, so look out for some more posts from me, too, I hope ! 2. Michael Outlaw
    3. I return to the list after a long absence imposed by illness and I send warm greetings to all listers and especially to anyone who may remember me. Long-term members with long memories may remember that in April 2007 I posted a question about Dutchmen in Lowestoft, since it seemed that my 3xgreat grandmother, Mary MILES, was left at the altar by a certain John PELLS, alias Jan PELTZ/PEELS. The banns had been called three times in the summer of 1812 at St Peter, Gunton, near Lowestoft, but the marriage had never taken place. Two months later my 2x great grandfather, James MILES, was born out of wedlock. Subsequently I discovered that a John PELTZ had married Ann CATCHPOLE apparently at Lowestoft in Nov 1813 and again, a fortnight later, at Gunton. They had two sons and a daughter, John Catchpole PELTZ, Cornelius Catchpole PELTZ and Esther PELTZ. Later again I found John Catchpole PELLS in the 1861 census living at Feltwell in Norfolk. His occupation was listed as falconer. I thought listers might like to know that I have recently been contacted by a descendant of John PELLS who advised me to look for John on the internet. Lo and behold, I discover that he was a famous falconer, who worked for various members of the aristocracy, and was responsible for establishing the 'Dutch school of falconry' in England. More important, for me at least, was the news that his father, Jan PEELS, was also a falconer, born at Valkenwaards, in North Brabant, Netherlands, who came to Lowestoft and worked as falconer for John Dawson DOWNES Esq of Gunton Old Hall. As I mentioned in my original post five years ago, my mother, rest her soul, had spoken often of a family tradition of Dutch blood in the family but I had never been able to find evidence of it. Of course, I have no firm evidence now, but I retain hope, like Mr Micawber, that 'something will turn up'. I have no idea what happened to prevent that wedding in 1812, but I am now more inclined to believe that he is my 3X great grandfather. Perhaps he had to go off somewhere just before the wedding, perhaps even back to Holland, and perhaps by the time he came back Mary had had the child and died (I haven't been able to find any record of her after the birth of her son, James). Perhaps Jan took James into his own care and brought him up with his own sons by Ann Catchpole; perhaps that's how my James met Mary Ann Catchpole whom he later married. Only a miracle will ever solve these problems, but it is fascinating to speculate. I have told this long story partly because I am too excited to keep it to myself and partly as an encouragement to 'newish' family historians who may be up against a brick wall. One never knows when evidence will materialize and this is especially true as more and more records, of all kinds, are becoming available on the internet. Only six weeks ago, I was pointed to a will which enabled me to take my OUTLAW line back another five generations and more than a hundred years, but that's a story for the Norfolk list. I apologize for celebrating my return to the list with such a long post: I promise to be more succinct in future. Best wishes to all Michael OUTLAW Shanklin, isle of Wight

Refering back to the 1861 census I have followed Mary Ann Mudd to this point and then I lost her. I have been through the census for all her siblings and children she is not with any of them and she does not seem to have died. I tried marrying her off to various people but they never seemed quite right. The Death that you found in Sudbury fits perfectly for my Mary Ann as she was born in 1806 and would have been 84 when she died. This means that Mary Ann Mudd could have remarried and become Mary Ann Elliston. Mary Ann Mudd was born in Badley Suffolk in 1806. From the 1881 census Mary Ann Elliston the wife of Henry was born in Badley. I think that Badley has been written as Bradley in the 1871 census. Henry Elliston and Mary Ann Mudd are in the same household in the 1861 census and I guess they later got married. The problem is I can't find a marriage for them, maybe they lied about their ages and never really got married either! The whole of her family seem a bit strange as two of Mary Ann's brothers each marry one of her daughters (uncles marrying nieces must be illegal, I think) and Edwin, (her son in the 1861 census) appears married in the 1871 census but didn't actually marry until 2 years later. I will probably get Mary Ann's Death certificate to see if it is any help. As it is 4 years ago that you posted the query I would be interested to know if you got any further. Maybe you have already found a solution. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Ambrose Farrow - Great Thurlow This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. The problem I am having is that Rachel disappears completely in the 1871 and 1881 census. John was born in 1865. I'm also having problems trying to find a death record for Rachel. Rachel re-appears in the 1891 census as a housekeeper for her nephew George in Bungay. My research has been further complicated by the fact that Rachel's elder brother James also gave birth to a daughter Rachel 5 years before hand in 1828! So it's been very easy confusing the two! The Elizabeth Gardiner I'm interested in married Robert Hazell in 1833 also in Monk's Eleigh. In all the censuses from 1851 on she gave her birth place as Monk's Eleigh. Is it possible that these two Elizabeths are different people? Does anyone have access to the baptism registers for both parishes to see if there is an Elizabeth Gardiner in each for 1805 to 1815? I'd be delighted if they prove to be the same woman but I'm beginning to have my doubts and I'm not sure why. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Ambrose Farrow - Great Thurlow This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 3. Linda, We have a letter-head of Botwood and Egerton motor engineers of Carr Street in Ipswich dated June 12th 1906. Also a photograph of the workshops in Woodbridge Road from around 1905, originally built for the manufacture of carriages, the works were readily adapted to the motor car works. Willliam and Samuel Botwood inherited the coach-building business when their father died in 1896 - right at the beginning of the motor car era. 3. Dear Nivard & Charles, Thank you so much for expanding my knowledge and giving me something more to consider. I've been overly busy the past week so apologise for not responding sooner. Hopefully this coming will be calmer...so I'll have some time to push further. The first fall wind storm is scheduled to arrive this evening...it appears summer may be over on the West Coast. Everyone pull out the 'woollies'. Keep warm Linda B.C. Canada. Hi Linda There does not appear to be a lot of coachbuilders in and around Ipswich in that period If I remember rightly there were railway carriage manufacturers there? Which seems to be backed up by In :- A Suffolk Bibliography on Ancestry Under Coachbuilding (p107) 5703 Bennet and Sons, merchant coach-and harness-makers and exporters. Special export Catalogue for 1886 [Ipswich], (1885) 5704 Botwood, W.T. and S.E. Ipswich carriage works. Carriage designs. 1. [SFK-UK] MEEK , WOODGATE & DAY ( 1883 )
    2. From The Times ( London, England ), Wednesday, Aug. 15, 1883; pg.5; Issue 30899.  CHARGE OF MURDER. An inquest was held at Ipswich yesterday on the body of Lilian Alice Lyons MEEK , the little girl who was murdered the previous evening in that town. Mary Caroline WOODGATE , wife of a labourer, proved that the deceased was her child before her marriage, and that the prisoner Thomas Lyons DAY was its father.  For several days DAY had been loitering near her house, and on Monday he asked her to let him come and see the child.  He said he wanted to say goodbye to it, as he was going away.  She gave him leave to come when her husband was at home, and in the evening he came.  He took the little girl on his knee, talked to her, and kissed her, and then put his hand to her throat and cut it.  Her  husband struggled with DAY , by whom he was stabbed under the right ear.  William WOODGATE , the wounded man, confirmed his wife's evidence, and said that the prisoner asked the child who was her father, and when she said WOODGATE was, he told her she should not call him father again.  The jury found a verdict of  "Wilful murder " against Thomas Lyon DAY.
