    3. Dear Pat, I was intrigued by your DENNY enquiry on the Suffolk mailing list. My interest is in the Knappett connection to Edward Denny. Edward Denny married Margaret Knappett on 3 May 1795, after the birth of Ephraim in 1793. Ephraim's mother was Edward's first wife Mary Ann Knappett. I believe that Mary Ann & Margaret were sisters. Edward married Mary Ann at Hacheson in 1788. He married Margaret at Hoxne in 1795 a decent interval after Mary's death in 1790. There were at least 8 children from his second marriage. All Edward's sons had names beginning with E, Ephraim (twice), Edmund, Ezekiel, Elias, Epaphras & Elisha. The girls got M - Mary, Martha & Margaret. 1. Re: [SFK-UK] British Home Children to Canada
    2. If it is the site run by Percy Snow which you found, where Clement WEST has been "claimed", it means that a researcher has submitted his/her interest in Clement WEST & given Percy Snow details of his/her connection to him, & also details how anyone else researching the same person can make contact. We have "claimed" Ernest VANNS of Hadlow, Kent on the site, which is how we know. The parents of the Clement WEST to whom you refer appear to be William WEST & Alice (nee BLOWER ), both of Birmingham, who both seemed to have died in March Qtr.1892 RD Birmingham (6d 74 for Alice - aged 30 ) & ( 6d 94 for William - aged 36. ) On the 1891 census they a daughter Alice aged 7 & a 6week old baby Mary Ann. On the 1901 census Alice, aged 17, is a Visitor to Thomas & Catherine RICHARDSON in Aston, Birmingham. However, after finding the above information, we have found Eden C. WEST on the 1891 census, aged 9 months, born Cannock, Staffordshire, a nephew to John & Elizabeth WEST, both born in Birmingham, & Eden's parents Clement ( brother to above-mentioned John ), a Soldier, is also there with his wife, & mother of Eden, namely Edith (nee WHITE ) from Chislehampton, Oxfordshire. On the 1901 census Clement & Edith are in Aston Manor, Warwickshire, with Eden 10, Eva 9, Evelyn 4 & Edgar 1. On the 1911 census Clement & Edith are still in Aston Manor with Eva, Evelyn, Edgar & 4 more children, Robert 8, Frederick 6, Ivy 2 & Alice 1. Unfortunately, we have been unable to trace Eden. Sorry not to be more help, but at least you can rule out the Clement WEST on the British Home Children site. 3. Thank you Giles, Nivard and Frances for your very interesting comments and information. I have seen some Thomas Ives DENNY entries, and will try see if there is a connection to him, thanks for the SOC ref, it may come in very useful. Thank you Giles. Your Denny GARDENER also sounds interesting Nivard, especially that he is a son of  an 'Edmund', that christian name runs down thru the DENNY line that I am working on, just about every family in every generation uses it, even down to our soninlaw. He actually hates that name, but he may yet have cause to be proud of it. I can but try. I have yet to find the DENNY line I am working on, that far north in Suffolk Frances, but it is early days, only been working on the DENNY lot for two months. I will keep your information just in case. Thank you all Pat ________________________________ Alfred Edmund Denny born 1886 Great Bealings s/o John DENNY and Jane KING, has the dubious reputation of being a bigamist. 3. If a Home Child then "Claimed" may mean he was claimed by a sponsor in Canada and went to work for that person. You don't state his birthdate but... In the 1901 census for Canada there is a Clement West, living with Donald McKinnon family in Prince Edward Island, East Queens on Brackley Point Road. Today that road runs from downtown Charlottetown to PEI National Park on the north shore of the island Other details - Born 3 April 1887 England, immigrated 1895, working as Domestic Can't see him in 1911 also don't see an Eden Wets in either year Did you access the Home Children on National Archives site in Canada? The youth we are looking for is Eden Clement West and I found a possible entry for a 9 year old on the Carthigian in 1895 (called Clement West) and a possible chr on 8 Sept 1890. 3. There is some information on the Denny family in the Packard special document collection at the Society of Genealogists. An index for the Packard documents are due to be put online in the near future. In document 1266 in that collection, there is a pedigree of Thomas Ives Denny which notes Thomas Ives Denny's children, but only names some of them. Alas, no Edward Denny c1766 is mentioned. Thomas Ives Denny was also an illegitimate son - the son of Thomas Denny and Hannah Ives. However the Denny family were quite wealthy, had property in various villages, and certainly Thomas Ives Denny had more than one wife and at least one illegitimate child that has been found. So there may be a connection and so this could be of help. The above is from the ARTHUR WEBB KING collection. So, I do believe lulupat's 1911 census is correct. It is VERY interesting that lulupat notes the name Elliot. This would imply I may have the 1878 marriage of HENRY KING to SUSANNAH HUBBARD incorrect (even though there was an Arthur George King as witness) and I should instead attach the 1875 marriage of HENRY DOUGLAS THING to SUSANNAH ELLIOT which indeed would make HENRY'S father CHARLES THING. This would then support lulupat's birth record of HENRY DOUGLAS THING in 1953 and my 1871 census record for CHARLES (39, CERTIFIED MANURE MAKER) and ELIZABETH THING living in NEEDHAM MARKET etc. The 1875 marriage of THING does not look like mis-transcription of KING. Could they have collectively changed their surname? Seems unlikely to me. -------------------------------------------------- Re: KING Ipswich This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. The name Thing is quite common in Suffolk I note from looking at the records. Why or if they changed their name to King I do not know but the evidence suggests that they did. Either that or an old fashioned TH looks very much like a K and it has been seriously mis-transcribed for generations but I doubt that theory. The marriage of Charles Thing to a Webb and the birth of Arthur Webb Thing at the right time who had a brother Henry Douglas also born at the right time seems to be evidence too strong to suggest that the later Arthur Webb King and Henry Douglas King are not the same people. -------------------------------------------------- Re: KING Ipswich This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Anne married Charles Partridge. I have the Gardiner's back to around 1690 at the moment, so if you are interested in exchanging trees let me know. I have researched this line and there are no other Elizabeth's born in either parish around this time. The family moved from Chelsworth to Monks Eleigh sometime around 1812-1813. Which is probably why Elizabeth says she was born in Monks Eliegh, as she was most likely only 1 or 2 yrs when the family moved. The descendants of Robert Gardiner & Susannah Coates married extensively into my Partridge and Elmer trees. -------------------------------------------------- Re: Martha Garrod This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I have also located Banns read in Islington St Marys, although her name is spelt as Alabella (maybe mis-spelt) It states that the couple are both of that parish but no record showing for a marriage there either. BOLTON of Fore Hill, Ely, Cambridgeshire, shows "No 3 Troop" of the Suffolk Yeomanry at the "Cutter Hotel" in Ely on 4 April 1915. The handwriting on the back, erroneously indicating that the front row should be read from right to left, matches that of my great-grandfather's half-brother, Frederic Thomas (known as Tom) BRADY (1893-1978), who can be seen at the left end of the middle row. He was recruited by the regiment's "second line" (the 2/1st Suffolk Yeomanry) at Ely on 8 Feb. 1915 (WO 364/366; Ancestry images 23399 to 23403) but I wonder whether these troopers were part of the new "third line" or 3/1st training unit formed in that year (http://www.1914-1918.net/suffolkyeo.htm). Hotel proprietor Thomas Thompson HILL kept the Cutter Inn at Annesdale and Broad Street in Ely. The boy at the window may have been his son, Henry Morton T. HILL (1900-1973). The officer is Second Lieutenant Alfred (known as Dick) ROSLING (c.1892-1955). The Staff Sergeant Major on his right (our left) is named R.S.M. (Regimental Sergeant Major) J. MANLEY in the printed caption of a September 1916 photograph of 131 members of the 2/1 Suffolk Yeomanry's "A" Squadron, which I hope to be able to post here next year. At least two of the men at Ely wear the Imperial Service badge above the right breast pocket, signifying their agreement to serve overseas. The names endorsed by my uncle Tom are: Window: HILLS [HILL] Top row: WOODS, SPINKS, GOLDSMITH, LOINES O, CATTERMOLE, CRANE H, BURTON & F HEATH 2nd row: F T BRADY, WETSTONE, HOWLETT, BAILEY, TOOLEY, LARKIN, CANHAM H, CRANE F Bottom row: KINGSLEY [or HINGSLEY?], SPURGEON E, Serg. 3. Pat, thanks for the assistance you have given me in the past with my MEADOWS/GODBOLD family research. As my husband and I are visiting UK next year and will have a fee window between 12-21 May, I wonder if there are any planned family history events at that time? I am always green with envy when I hear of these opportunities for research. With thanks, Margery (NSW, Australia) -----Original Message----- From: Patricia Bridges Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2012 11:03 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [SFK-UK] Family History Fair in Suffolk on Saturday 20th.October John and I will be calling in Charles :-) I would like to upgrade my Suffolk Burial Index CD. 3. Hello, There's a family history fair on Saturday 20th. October at the Community Centre, School Street, Needham Market, Suffolk, IP6 8BB. This year the fair has been organised by Suffolk FHS are many more societies have booked to be there. I'll be in the Internet Cafe next door (which has been booked for use as a research centre) with my laptop and a number of reference books to answer research enquiries. It'll be the first fair I've been able to attend since breaking my leg in February. The page http://www.suffolkfhs.org.uk/meet_us.html gives more information about the fair and how to get there - it's very close to the A14 and A140 so it's reasonably easy to get to from nearby counties. Regards, Charles Fuller.

    3. Hi, I have found a reference to the baptism of Susannah LISTER for 3 July 1808 at Chelmsworth giving her birthday as 8 June 1808. Her parents were given as Francis & Susan LISTER nee STILL. I have not been able to find any parish records online to be able to verify these records. I would greatly appreciate it if there is anybody who is able to check these records for me. Thanks. Brenda Jones
