Thank you very much Giles for your hearth tax lists. The names are fascinating - so many given names have been repeated over generations - from those I have collected in the 1500s, through the 1600s and the 1700s in Ireland. There are a few names I am particularly interested in, and I will contact you direct about those. With regards, Rex Johnson
By the mid 1660s and early 1670s, there were over 26 households in Suffolk with the surname Humphry. This would suggest that persons with that surname had been in Suffolk for many generations. As Humphrey can also be a forename, I would suspect that there would be several family lines with that surname. I have put below my sign off all the Humphreys I can spot in the various hearth taxes between 1664 and 1674. If you would like further information on these entries and the villages where they lived, please email me off list. I would normally have referred you to previous correspondence on hearth taxes as to what is available, but the Suffolk roots archive of pre 2007 are not yet available (or at least I cannot access them). We are back to Charles because it was his second son Thomas who went to Ireland in the early 1600s, and started the Humphrey/Humphries/Humphrys, Umfrey etc., etc. line in Fermanagh. Irish histories confirm these origins and near family members in Suffolk. A number of history books have told us that the line goes back to Sir Peter Humfrey of Cirencester in Gloucestershire and that second son Thomas was 10 generations down the line of descent from him. The books also tell us that the great grandfather of Thomas seven generations down from Sir Peter - was the first Humphrey to live in the county of Suffolk, and he came into the county by marrying an heiress. We have failed so far to find that marriage, and without it we dont know where the family lived before Suffolk. Searches of pedigrees and family trees have not been successful. We have Thomas possibly going back via father Charles, grandfather Richard, great grandfather Stephen, g.great grandfather John, but the details are elusive. Has anyone worked this family or does anyone ave information to fill in this gap? Any help gratefully received. Rex (Lincolnshire).

Thanks for the reminder, Anne, but pls do not instruct members of the List on etiquette. That's my job. This post came to me first for review because it was oversize (i.e., < 20K) and I let it through. The list rule is no more than three sets of footers and this post only had two. The reason for its being oversize was the mess of unnecessary "urldefense" footers that you saw ... this is an artifact of RootsWeb's new mail system and will be no longer appear as soon as RootsWeb figures how to prevent them from appearing. This is not the fault of the poster and is not something that he/she can change at the moment or do anything about. We just have to grin and bear them ... Mea Culpa Just thought I was doing something good for researchers by passing along a Facebook posting from a ( military) friend. I couldn't match to any of the names and hoped our List members might help. Brad, On the list is Noel Fitzpatrick of the Australian Flying Corps. War Graves Commission may know that he originated in Dubbo, New South Wales, and that there is 102 pages of Service Record for him on the National Archives of Australia website. There may still be relatives living in Dubbo.
