    3. Were your French family millers? The name appears in Melford in the early 18th century with a family of probably prosperous millers ... no Thomas or Alice of course. 3. There are 111 different entries for the name French in the Suffolk hearth taxes in the years, 1662,1663, 1664, 1666 1669, 1670 and 1674 for the name French. Given that you are back to 1722, the hearth tax information could give you the clues as to which villages or names to look for of the persons who might be your subjects father or grandfather. If you want a look up of these, I will send you a message off list. 3. Dear Helen, Thank you for the research I don't know where the "Churton" comes from as the mother was a CHASTON from the Aldeburgh area. All three daughters were baptised/christened on the same day Martha Chaston Mortimer, Barbara Mullinger Mortimer and Ann Gillingham Mortimer the last two have middle names that just don't fit with anything else in the family, whether it was a ploy to "keep in" with a landlord, employer etc as was the custom in some families, might be an option but I don't think we will find out Regards Roger
