Just a heads up for when joining the new groups on Groups.io As I have some would be subscribers who seem to have missed a step or two in the process Depending on how you subscribe and if you are already a groups.io user :- On subscribing You may receive an email to confirm your email address is your own and valid, just reply to it (don't add any text) its a one off confirmation You may receive a Pending Subscription email, asking a few simple questions, all you need do is answer them and return These are simple anti spammer measures to minimise the risk to the subscribers to the groups If you have not received the confirmation of email address or the pending subscription message, please check your spam folder in case its gone there Or email me to check the situation, with the groups name, your name and email address You can check your account status yourself and which groups you subscribe to by logging into Groups.io -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) . .
Hi all A final goodbye or is it au revoir pour le moment ;-) So the end has come, in theory this is the last day of Rootsweb lists I have sent invites to all who are subscribed to this list Although you don't need the invite, if you go to https://groups.io Register if needed (email address & create a password) You should receive an email to confirm your email address is correct, reply to it Once registered and logged in, select "Find or Create a Group" from the top blue bar Enter Suffolk and Rootsweb (adding Rootsweb will narrow down to lists ex rootsweb, there are a lot of other lists on io groups) On the home page for https://groups.io/g/Suffolk (or any other list of interest) is a Join this list button And you are good to go Depending on the group you may receive a pending subscription message, so you may need to answer those questions posed (these are just sensible anti spam measures) You will find groups.io are much better than Rootsweb/Mailman, with the facility to post pictures/documents etc So ta-ra for now, hope to see you on groups.io if you are not already there -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
As we say goodbye to the Rootsweb lists thought I'd post my interests all relating to my husbands line. They are mainly around the Bury St. Edmunds area, although some are from just over the border in Norfolk, an area my husband and I know, as we lived there for 10 years in the 60/70's. One line the BUNYAN's went to Suffolk from Essex, and prior to that Hertfordshire. BLOYSE, CATCHPOLE, CLIFT, DAINES, HINES, MOORE, NORMAN, PLUMB, RINGWOOD & SMOOTHY. However, on my line there is one puzzle that may eventually link to Suffolk. I have recently made contact through the Lost Cousins site, which I thoroughly recommend, with a 4th cousin. Now she has SARGENT on the maternal side of her family who hail from Suffolk. However, our line, her paternal line, links to a Richard SARGENT bc1782 in Essex. He moved over gradually to Hastings, Sussex, marrying his first wife in Maidstone, Kent. We don't know where unfortunately, but gut feelings are that he may well have earlier links to Suffolk. So if anyone, has a possible link, can you please help us. :-) Happy hunting to all, Frances fmb At bunyanclan . co . uk
I am posting this on behalf of a non subscriber as its nearing the end of Rootsweb lists Her email address is tsgascoigne AT icloud.com I will suggest she joins the new group on groups.io Hi this is a long shot and not sure if I’m on the right track. But my 2nd great grand mother was Lily Bentick born 1868 Manchester Lancashire, he father was Edward/Edmond Bentick born Badwell Ash Suffolk 1831, his parents were James Bentick born in Suffolk 1786 he married Emily Reade, his father was John Bantick born Great Ashfield Suffolk 1760, his father was Daniel Bantock 1739 Sudbury Suffolk, his farther Daniel Bantock 1761 Suffolk, then his father Samual Bantock 1649 Suffolk, his father Samual Bantock 1619, his father William 1582, his father Henry T Bantock/Bantoft hitcham, father Thomas 1500 hitcham and last his father Thomas Bantock 1445. I haven’t got all the children or siblings of each of them as I’m not sure this is correct. Did the names change over the years or am I completely off track. My grandad was Stanley Bentink Gascoigne and no one knew where his middle name can’t from until I started doing the family tree it’s from his grandmother Lily’s side. Sorry for such a long message my tree is on ancestry. Thank you Tracey

"Googling" her at Polstead provides a wealth of info.
In Bury St Edunds, there is the Moyse's Museum in which there is the full story of the dream Maria Marten's mother had in which she saw in her dream, the murder of her daughter by William Corder. In the museum, there is a plaster cast of the death mask of William Corder after his execution in Bury. Regards Bob Payne Suffolk FHS Member. (posting on behalf of Brian Salt, it was held as it was over sized, mainly as it included the whole digest, so rather than reject I have edited it down) Re: SUFFOLK Digest, Vol 15, Issue 20 MARIA MARTEN Hi Mick I am aware of Maria Marten’s story from a Sally Glynn in the US. Unfortunately, I can not tie her in to my branch of Martin family. Which is a shame, as it would have livened up the family history as all were agricultural labourers + all seemed to be very law abiding!,! Thanks for you enquiry. Hi all So this may be the last reminder, that Rootsweb lists will *cease* to be on the 2nd March 2020 Thats *13* days access from now ! (at best) I say at best as we have already had significant downtime this month, so don't count on having access to the end I have sent invites to all who are subscribed to this list Although you don't need the invite, if you go to https://groups.io Register if needed (email address & create a password) You should receive an email to confirm your email address is correct, reply to it Once registered and logged in, select "Find or Create a Group" from the top blue bar Enter Suffolk and Rootsweb (adding Rootsweb will narrow down to lists ex rootsweb, there are a lot of other lists on io groups) On the home page for https://groups.io/g/Suffolk (or any other list of interest) is a Join this list button And you are good to go Depending on the group you may receive a pending subscription message, so you may need to answer those questions posed (these are just sensible anti spam measures) You will find groups.io are much better than Rootsweb/Mailman, with the facility to post pictures/documents etc Remember, although the lists close on the 2nd March 2020, there may be trouble ahead, and you may not be able to access Rootsweb if you leave it to late -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
Posting my name for Suffolk. I only have one, BROWN as above, in Lowestoft in 1881, family previously in Theberton. Jan Marchant Australia
Sorry to repeat myself but time is ticking by As we now all know the Rootsweb lists will cease to operate on the 2nd March 2020 The archives will we are told, remain searchable, but in what form I am unsure, and for how long they will survive I do not know, while Ancestry say they will keep them available, they said that about the mailing lists didn't they ;-) Since the archives were (nearly) reinstated they have lost a lot of their usefulness, firstly as all posters email addresses were removed (GDPR again) and the search does not work as it should They say they will fix the problems with the archives search but I won't hold my breath waiting for it to happen (NB if you check each lists archives it will show all posts up to date, but if you *search* the archives, separately or all together, the latest posts are 1 year and 4 months old) So what I would suggest is, a last post or more to the Rootsweb lists (that is all that you are a subscriber to) stating your interests and connections (ie when, where and who) NB Use a *new* email and add the list address, do *not* reply to one and type you subject line over it as it will be lost in a thread attached to the original post, you want yours to stick out if someone looks at the archives And if you want to be contacted, add in an email address in a form that does not look like an email address, (or presumably it will be stripped out by the software) Such as fred.bloggs AT whatsit.com That way anyone finding it in the archives will at least have a possibility of making contact with you Just a thought You have until the 1st March to do it BUT don't leave it to long, who knows what may happen from now until then For those that have done so already, well done ;-) -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

I understand all Rootsweb mailing lists will close in March 2020 and email addresses will be removed for archived posts so I'm reposting the list of surnames I'm researching - STYLES, COLLYER, MEADOWS and COLLEN - in Thrandeston, Rickinghall Inferior and Walsham Le Willows in Suffolk and also in Sydney, Australia as follows - Thomas STYLES (1714-1780) m. Judith COLLYER (1714-1781) in 1734 in Roudham, Norfolk; resided in Thrandeston. Samuel MEADOWS (1719-1799) m. Judith STYLES (1738-aft.1800) in 1762 in Diss, Norfolk; resided in Rickinghall Inferior. Sarah MEADOWS (1766-1856) m. Thomas COLLEN (1768-1835) in 1789 in Rickinghall Inderior, Suffolk; resided in Walsham Le Willows. Both myself and my uncle have a 5th-8th cousin DNA match to a descendant of the above Sarah MEADOWS and Thomas COLLEN. My 2 x great grandfather was William George MEADOWS, a mariner, born in Suffolk about 1840, son of William MEADOWS and Eliza DIXON. He arrived in Australia around 1862 and married Mary Ann DONOVAN in May 1863 in Sydeny, Australia. His parent's names and his occupation were listed on his marriage certificate. I haven't been able to find William or his parents in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Census in Suffolk, or a marriage for his parents or their deaths. My father thought there was a name change after arrival in Australia from OLD MEADOWS to MEADOWS however I can't find anything to confirm that. I would love to hear from anyone researching the same and can be contacted via the email address below which I've changed so it doesn't look like an email address and hopefully wont be stripped out of this message.
